I AGREE!
Also throw in everyone else from Final Fantasy VII except Zack. He was a one man army. The rest were useless fools.
Wow, I thought I was gonna die since i forgot my flame shield but......... a positive on this? Have the fanboys come to their senses?!

All seriousness, i really thought i was gonna get flamed
He beat me to it...though I hate/never played that game, I seen better characters in that game then her in other FF's. Though Yuna comes to mind as a useless character...and Colette...and Maya(Legaia 2)...wow...I hate a lot of female characters in RPGS.
Yuna's far from useless. Her summons - especially the last three - can absolutely destroy everything.

If you thought she was useless, you were playing her wrong.

Anyone on an escort quest, Dana Mercer (Prototype), Barbara Gordon (Arkham Asylum), Alyx Vance (uselessness multiplied by the fact that she keeps making me think about it), UNSC Marines (Halo). Why's it always the female second? I'm starting to think the gaming industry is sexist.
Why the hate for Alyx? She kicked ass, especially in Episode 1. The only time I ever had a problem with her was one corner in Entanglement where she'd get shotguned to death before I could do anything about it; hardly a problem compared to most "escort" characters, plus the fact that she is actually likable.

For my own pick for characters that were supposed to be awesome but weren't: everyone in Daikatana.

Most likely I did. Still don't like her

Dogmeat from Fallout 3. I thought he was a tough looking monster dog and then I got into some combat. He dies faster than a goomba!

Fair enough. She's not useless though, which was my point :p

First to come to mind was Nils from the first GBA Fire Emblem. Good idea in theory, he allows your characters to move twice in a given turn. However he cannot move again, so after a few uses the whole group is way ahead of him. So not only can he not continue using his powers but he is vulnerable too, and I hate letting characters die in Fire Emblem.

Anybody in Dead Rising that you have to escort to safety. This includes the ones who allegedly "fight on your side." My ass.

I'm actually quite sure Alyx Vance is my most hated fictional character. I don't find her likable. She seems to have no personality beyond worshiping the ground Gordon walks on and playing with the robot dog. She's been of no use to me since she handed me the gravity gun, despite trying her damnedest, and while I wouldn't have called her the most useless character in those circumstances if she didn't pull attention to herself so damn much... But she does, she makes me question why we have this teenage girl on our side, and the fact that I have to lose when she dies pisses me off. I will admit she's more useful than an escort mission person, but the escort mission person doesn't tend to make itself seem more useful then it is.

Sonic in SONIC 06!

His story has nothing, repeat, NOTHING to do with the over arching plot. He attributes NOTHING to the plot until the VERY END OF A GAME HE IS THE TITLE CHARACTER FOR.

Stem, from Dragon Age. Or was it Sten? That guy you rescue from that one place but he still hates you. Him. Not helpful at all. And I know how to get into his good graces, just can't be bothered.

Dragon Age seriously had too many characters to choose from. It's an odd complaint, but I stand by it. When there's only really 1 or 2 spots to work with (assuming everyone uses the spirit healer), all the people you pick up...it's too much.

Richter, the main flippin character of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. This guy is the legendary vampire hunter, armed with a magic whip, enchanted artifacts, a destined to fight Dracula. Guess what? He's slow, he has terrible handling, no double jump, and his whip is shorter than the other character's.

As it turns out, Maria is vastly better. Maria is the pubescent magical girl you rescue in the castle. She has some vaguely defined powers dealing with animals. She's smaller, far more agile, has a double jump, and her birds have at least a foot of range on Richter's whip.

TL:DR, Little Girl > Vampire Hunter.

Edit: Oh, by the way. Fran is surprisingly useless because of how generalized everyone is in FF12. You'd expect her to be fairly similar to the other characters, but her stats are almost entirely the bottom tier. In a game where everyone was fairly good at everything, she was simply not good at all.

Also, as much as I loved Ashley, Wrex, Garrus, Tali, Liara and to a lesser extent Kaidan.... in Mass Effect I found that I could rarely rely on their actual AI's for any assistance in combat and so rather than pick who had the better abilities I found myself just picking the ones I liked most as characters for each mission.
Naturally this meant Ashley and Wrex were with me for like, half the game.
I second this, my AI would usually just stand behind a closed door for half of the mission.
They had great personalities though...

Try playing Symphony of the Night as Richter.

God damn does he ever suck. He's fine for boss battles thanks to his Item Crash+Holy Water but just getting from point A to point B is hell in Castlevania.

He can annihilate Dracula in 2-3 attacks, but gets totally owned by a bunch of Mermen.

They do give him a Double Jump in his Portrait of Ruin mode.

Take away his Holy Water Item Crash though :(

Well, I don't know about "useless", but honestly I never found a use for mages in Disgaea series. All my friends insist they are over powered, and show me the massive dmg they do in one hit. Then, I show them a combo with characters that does triple the dmg.
I preferred the Skulls, but I'm assuming you mean both, so here's my reason for why they're good: range.

A fully leveled spell from a Skull or Mage can reach much further than nearly every other attack in the game, and can have a spread of a 3x3 square at that high range if you so choose. A 3x3 splash is also much easier to "aim" properly for maximum effect than, say, the "cross" grids you get with other spells (though you have that as an option as well). Doing such crazy damage to an entire group with a single character is something that's incredibly useful, especially in the late-game. Once they get going, they're also incredibly easy to level. Blow up Cave/House/Hall of Ordeals 3/4/whatever with a single Mega Fire and get ten levels with one shot.

Of course, having fighters, martial artists, and all that hoo ha for the short game, and archers for mid-range, helps round out the versatility, so every character has some degree of usefulness. Except Flonne. You'd think she would at least learn magic on her own, considering her primary weapon is a staff. (That said, giving her a sword and teaching her Winged Slayer, Nightsever, Dark X Slash, etc. is amusing. Funny as hell to watch too.)

As an aside, I saw my friend solo Priere in Disgaea 1 using only an equally-leveled Galaxy Skull. Only non-standard move he needed was Omega Heal. It was also amusing teaching him gun abilities.

Oh my god did Richter suck in that game. Enemies level up as you progress through the castle, you don't. Hard to argue with just that. Least your whip does Holy damage innately. Means good damage on nearly everything in the castle.

Hydro Storm was awesome though.

I'm gonna just list a few characters that I NEVER use, but others may or may not have found use for.

Mission in KotOR. Whiny little runt. The Wookie and the Cat Lady were also seldom used.

Anyone who wasn't a Mage or Warrior in Dragon Age. Seriously, the thief class in that game just seemed terribly underpowered. If there weren't locks that needed to be picked they never would've left camp.

Samara in Mass Effect 2. A biotic who CAN'T use Warp? No thanks.

Brick/ "The Berserker" in Borderlands. His weapon specialty is a bit of a waste, why punch things to death when you have guns, and you really didn't need to tank in that game, anyway.
