Oh, seems like there's mostly RPG characters in this thread, let me introduce one from a platformer.
Zero from Mega Man X3. It's the first time you can control him in the series, so you'd think it would be pretty exciting on top of assuming he could be useful, right? You could never be anymore wrong.
The only real advantage he has is:
1)If you charged long enough, you can shoot two charged shots plus a Sabre slash.
2)The Sabre attack can kill nearly all foes in it's range in one hit.
3)Right off the bat he has twice more health than Mega Man X.
The big disadvantages are:
1)You can only use him ONCE every stage, and not even the entire stage plus boss, at best you can use him only one third of every stage. You automatically switch back to X after reaching a supposed mini boss area.
2)If you die as Zero through any means, you can never use him EVER again unless you remembered your password. This will ruin your chance of obtaining the ultimate item.
3)He has no real armor protection. As soon as you obtain the body armor upgrade for Mega Man plus a few Heart tanks, you can already soak up way more hits than he can.
For a character who gets all the good scenes, he sure is surprisingly useless. Luckily they change this in the later games.

Try playing Symphony of the Night as Richter.
But that can be excused, can it? i mean it's the first game to control a belmont in a free roam area of sorts. Alucard was embarrassingly easy once you got to to a certain point, whereas belmont might require a little planning to get through areas, especially inverted castle areas. Think of it as Symphony of the Night, Free roam hard mode, Optional Easy boss mode.
I suppose it's more of a personal thing. moving slow and using the Vampire Killer was more of a cool thing for me.
