Has anyone here not bought a game after hearing what Yahtzee had to say about it? Or do you just take what he says comically and with a grain of salt, and go by your own opinion? and how often has he been right/wrong in the end based on the purchase you made having then played it yourself?

What are your guys thoughts and experiences?

I take his opinions to heart most of the time, But just like I take all reviews to heart If I really want to play a game, I rent it If its gotten bad reviews and confirm the reviews or not.

Yahtzee has been spot on with all most every single review hes ever made specially the bioshock 2 review. Sadly I purchased that game based upon my like of the original and was sorely disappointed.

So yes I take his reviews to heart If its a game I had no real fervor for then I don't get it. If I do then I go ahead and rent it to confirm his findings, and I don't buy it.

Doing that is a bad idea. He rips on every game because its funny, don't take it seriously.

I dont pay much attention to him.
Sure there are things he says that i agree with but, his job is making reviews that entertain.
If i like or dislike something then that's all that matters.
I make sure i judge games after i play them or heavily research them.

I watch for the entertainment, but usually end up getting the game anyways (see Assassin's Creed).
Reviews are good, but always dig around and take them with a huge grain of salt. Everyone has different tastes.

No, of course not. I can usually judge in advance whether or not I'll like a game, so I rarely pay much attention to reviews.

That is, unless there seems to be a trend of bad reviews for the game.

I bought Fallout 3 after Yahtzee's review of it completely by chance, but discovered that most of what he said in his review to be almost true

I haven't not bought a game because he disliked it, most of the time because of the delay in his release schedule his reviews come out after I've bought and finished any game I was intending on buying anyway, and I don't always agree with him.

However I did finally cave and buy Call of Duty 4 after he praised it. I was considering it already but that was what tipped me over the edge.

I take his review about as seriously as any other review. It's not like he's inaccurate after all, he just points out all of the bad and less of the good in a game. He's mean to all games, but if he mentions something in his review that sounds like a game-breaking aspect for me, then I'll take it into consideration when thinking about purchasing a game.

Of course, I never buy a game based solely on any reviews because if it's something I already know that I won't enjoy, why bother, right?

I stopped right after Fable 2. He gave that game way too easy a time considering just what a huge pile of giraffe shit it was.

I'll go by Gamespot most of the time. But I take yahtzee's views on Gaming as a whole seriously. Like Gaming is an art, and motion controls must die etc... Natal is peadophillic etc...

*Why yes, It has been yonks since I've posted on the Escapist

He's a funny guy, but I'm not going to be swayed by his or anyone elses opinion. If I like a game I like it. This is why I don't get people when you say one negative thing about a game they like they flip out. It's an opinion and Yahtzee likes to beat up on games because that's what makes him get views, even if he likes a game he'll bash it like Fallout 3 and Prince of Persia.

You can filter out all of the snarkiness and randomly obscure references and you are able to get the good and the bad things he highlights about a game. I don't think of him so much as a reviewer, but more of someone who points out what makes the game good and bad. Its up to the audience to determine for themselves wether or not its worth buying.

No I don't take his review to heart because his job and reputation is known for being harsh on games for/in a comedic fashion and otherwise I would miss good number of good stuff, also he tends to dance around one general complaint or several nitpicks for the bulk of a review sometimes. Now if he says something IS good, That is when I take it more seriously.

Don't take his reviews to heart. He reviews games the way he does simply for comedic effect. If I were to take his reviews to heart, then I would not like gaming much anymore because he eviscerated some of my all time favorites. Just take his work for what it is: comedy, damn good comedy.

*laughs* Not really.

I've loved games he'd hated many a time, so I generally use his reviews for "lols". I will admit that occasionally, he's got a point, but other times he's so wrapped up in himself that he misses the bigger picture.

Hell no.

He trashes games for a living and points out all their flaws even if the game is good.

He usually explains himself most of the time and if the problems he points out aren't problems for me than I'll get the game if I'm interested.

You should never base a purchase on a reviewer's opinion. Because you will eventually end up buying a game you think is shit even though they say its amazing.

He is a critic.

Buying a game based on his reviews would leave people with very little option.

Portal would be one of the few games people'd have right now.
