I agree with that quote as well: It wouldn't be beneficial for a teacher to be a total d*ck but a bit of brutal honesty wouldn't hurt. If nothing else than to develop a bit of thick skin on the more sensitive students for later on in life when they won't be able to run to mommy and daddy when a superior tells it as they see it.CuddlyCombine said:Also, while I don't think they should be quite this extreme, I think teachers should be more critical. It always annoyed me when they'd tell other students that "it was great, except for [insert long, winding explanation of how everything is wrong]". If it sucks, then say, "Look, I don't think you're too good at math." Tough love, yes, but it's better than fake enthusiasm.

Called it as he saw it? So if a teacher thinks that a pupil is ugly or unpopular they should shine a spotlight on it. You can say stuff like "this is poor" but you cannot insult the child. That won't make them any better of a student and therefore you're not doing your job properly. Not every child can be turned into a genius by the school system but it's the teacher's job to try.Blizzaga19 said:Quote for truthiggyus said:We need more teachers like him. Seriously it's about time that a teacher called it as he saw it.
I laughed at this post.Gingerman said:The man should be stripped of his teaching position.
My girl friend had a teacher like him when she was in grade school, due to that teacher she has self confidence issues, she tries very hard at university but when ever she hits a road block she begins to panic as whenever she went for help from that teacher she called her a idiot and failure, a year of that can be very damaging to a young child.
Now thankfully I'm there to encourage and help which has got her through her time at University so far but saying these kind of things to a child from a person of power (I.e Teacher or parent) will have a lasting effect unlike if a student (in most cases).
Being thick skinned is a all well and good if you're a teenager or a adult but not when you are a child, positive re-enforcement will go far if the child is struggling whilst berating and insulting the kid will only make the matter worse.
Even if the kid was slacking then how is making them think that they are a loser and that there's no point going to encourage them to do better? the majority of children that fail in High school can probably lead back to this kind of behaviour from the people around them (Although not in all cases).
There's tough love then there's just bullying.
