This is actually a horrible news report.. You only hear 1 side of the story... I'm not going to say anything unless they aimed to be more professional about it..

My english teacher once called one of my creative writing assignments 'Hindenburgian'. Which is probably both the worst and best thing anyone has ever said about my writing.

I know kids are getting pampered somewhat into thinking they're all "special", but this just seems like a step too far in the other direction.

I think that the mother was gross looking and I didn't appreciate watching that video.

Also I respect the teachers opinion, but I'm an asshole so I would.

Personally, I think it was in some other context and this is just a lonely mom angry at the world.
If he's been teaching that long, he can't be too messed up.

First off, I [i/]bet[/i] there's a context to it.
Secondly, the kid and mother should grow the fuck up, I was called far worse in 6th grade (by a teacher) and laughed.

Wow. Trolling 10 year olds isn't funny, nor should it be treated as such. This could only have been made more ironic if he'd called her a hypocrite.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that, regardless of my previous statement, I agree with the sentiment that it's difficult, neigh on impossible to make an informed opinion on the situation due to the fact that only the whiny grievances of the girl's mother were aired.

In my school, one of my classmates was flipped off three times by a teacher, when he answered wrong, or was fooling around.

Everyone agrees that he is the best (or one of the best) teachers in the school.
There's a big difference in being "one of the best" and being a shit though. This falls well within the latter category.

Even when faced with some of the rowdy students, you tell them something that they are becoming a loser. Never a straight "You'll never amount to anything".

the girl was like eight years old!
Um, unless her parents sent her off to school too early (Which, luckily, my school district doesn't allow, meaning we don't end up with kids who are fucked up by being sent too early), she'd probably be 11 or 12, and the only picture available was one from when she was 8 or something for some arbitrary reason.

oh waah. My math teacher used to staple burger king applications to failed tests, and nobody went crying to the media then. These kids need to grow up.
Wait... any chance that was an AP Calculus class? Because my teacher did the exact same.

And that I've no problem with. It's even funny. But you DON'T leave a permanent mark in them. The BK application is a warning, the written words are an anchor.

do you think this is wrong, i do..

EDIT: I think this teacher should be fired..
Not only fired, but flogged and ridiculed for the rest of his life. Show him what it feels like to be bullied.....
Or just for about half a year. Your method isn't equivalent.

Saying a student's not very bright is one thing, saying they're a loser is an opinion. The teacher's saying what he thinks of that student and she's in the fucking 6th grade. You can ridicule kids when they're older for a joke but not at that age.
You said it yourself: at that kind of age bullying can have far greater impact than it does to an adult. Bullying, especially from a position of power, can leave LASTING emotional and psychological damage to the individual, so I think that a life time of physical and/or verbal abuse is perfectly equivalent because us adults can take it more.
I'm still disagreeing. There are some reasons why more punishment is needed for the adult but the rest of their life is just stupid.
Oh really? Well then, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I was bullied during my early teens (starting roughly grade 6), right when I had just transferred to a new school. I was made fun of so much that I was afraid to make any friends until grade 11. More importantly, this has left me without the drive to commit to any serious relationship, because I instinctively hide my feelings, in fear that they might be hurt again. Now if you consider that sort of damage to be equivalent to only a year's worth of penance, then you may seriously want review your own morals.

I think the girl's a little young to handle it, but from 9th grade on I'd be okay with teachers writing loser on the papers of the biggest idiots in the class. Also, as an extra, "you'll never be successful and the sole purpose of your existence is to provide cheap labor".

It completely amazes me that people are posting comments about this teacher, aren't really posting the problem with this teacher. It upsets me that people can write about arguing whether this teacher was joking or not. It doesn't matter whether he was joking or not and the fact that people can debate that issue means that they are just as messed up as this teacher. The truth is in this country, there are standards for every profession. The educational system is set up where for every school district, there are guidelines for the curriculum taught, including the numeric value assigned for the correct information provided on a given assignment. When a teacher assigns a -20% to a student's paper and then calling them a loser, not only is he being unprofessional, he is being dishonest because in school grading guidelines, -20% doesn't exist. If this teacher isn't going to give a student the correct grade, which is obvious in this case, how is he to be trusted to fairly grade papers? Perhaps, this is a case of discrimination against this student's mental capacity?

That's really harsh. Sure, sit the child down and talk to them, but calling them a loser? On their test paper no less? I'm sure the teacher msut have been drunk or something, how can you not think something like this would come back to haunt you?
