This is a slippery, slippery slope Valve and I really hope you don't fall down it.
This is what worries me the most. I would only be minorly bothered if it were, as all the fanboys are claiming, a way to make money off the impatient and if it had no effect on gameplay other than delaying unlocks, but consider the following:

They added "item sets" for all 5 of the packs that were released. Snipers (for example) with all of the new items equipped, INCLUDING the hat, cannot be killed with headshots. Yes, you read that right. With hats being as rare as they are, the only realistic way to benefit from the item set bonuses is to pony up the cash, and this is just plain sleazy.

A line has been crossed, and it's a pretty meaningful one. I might keep playing (hey, I already paid my 20 bucks and it's not like they can force me to buy hats), but I no longer trust them to do what's right for the game and I think a lot of people are feeling betrayed right now.

VALVE HAS RUINED TF2!

...

No seriously.
How? It won't punish anyone, this is just for people who don't have the hundreds of hours to sink into TF2 to get the items through random drops. Every item they're selling you can still unlock through random drops.

Hah, saying that TF2 fanboys will complain about this is like saying the sun will rise tomorrow and the tides will come in. It's a given.

But I can see one legitimate complaint being that it would effectively allow one to buy hats, TF2's signature prestige item. Even if they don't allow people to buy hats directly(Which I doubt) people could just buy weapons and smelt them down.

But, hey, it means I can finally get my goddamn Sandvich. I'm not complaining :)
They're allowing to buy hats. Possibly even the ones that were exclusive for a limited time (I saw Max's Severed Head on the catalogue, but not it's price because Steam is suffering under the pressure of all these downloads).

In the near future, things will be nerfed. And besides, if you can't kill them with a headshot, you switch to another class, get behind them, and kill them the old fashioned way.

Yes it is a stupid-ass buff, but it will get nerfed. Like plenty of other overpowered weapons/items in the past.

Not to mention the fact that no TF2 weapon (to my knowledge, although if there is there are literally only one or two if memory serves) is a 100% benefit thing, meaning there will always be a trade-off such as "Sure, you'll do more damage. But you now have a lot less health" or "Sure, you can have more accuracy. But no more random crits for you!".
Depends what you mean by 100% benefit - there are weapons there is very little use for given the alternatives (Pyro Axe, Pyro Homewrecker, Bonesaw), and some that just outclass the original in ALMOST every way, making the alternative a mild handicap (Sandman, Equalizer, Natascha).

There's definitely unequivocal upgrades, even though, yeah, there are some downsides (sometimes laughable ones). And of course for casual play there's almost no difference between the weapons, while competitive play is a bit...eh. Once I got to that stage I think I was right to quit.

Basically, there are quite a lot of unbalanced weapons that cheese up the game. It does make it satisfying, tho, when you take out a HWG with a Homewrecker. Oh, the humiliation. Rest of the new update (barring Scout unlocks) looks awesome.

How? blame the little kids for buying this junk, if anything its a slope with gold at the end no matter what

look at blizzard they tested this
Because now it's just micro-transactions for free stuff. Then it's like oh we have a new item and if you buy it with our new valve-wallet system you'll get it a week early before it can drop in game. Then it becomes certain items will be payment only.

The thing is, TF2 was bought and payed for up front. I don't like micro-transactions in a game, even if they're required or not, that I've already bought.

This seems perfectly fair to me. Valve are providing extra stuff with no real extra benefit, making vintage items even rarer and allowing people who don't have large amounts of time to get the same things as others.

In fact, if this was any other game, people would be calling this a success.

Which means that we're still not actually paying any extra money for this. In fact, not only is this free, but the stuff we do have is now actually worth money...

So...where's the problem?
Lol, really? That's so hypocritical.

If this were Activision, EA, 2K, Blizzard, whoever, you would be screaming bloody murder about their greed. But because this is Valve, you're kissing their feet.

I mean, I don't have a problem with it at all myself, but could you be any more of a fanboy?
If it were any of the other big dogs, they would only sell the stuff through the store. With TF2, you can still unlock the items normally, for free. If it was anyone else, they would make you pay for them.

Ugh, I don't really like that idea. I'm not going to throw a tantrum and say that it's RUINED TF2 FOREVAR, but hats are supposed to be a badge denoting that you've played the game alot for a long time. Unspoken bragging rights, if you will.

I read everything about it and it seems fair they only sell reskins (like the community made ones for example hats and the scotts man skull cutter) they dont give paying players advantages anything they sell can be found in-game
PS I hope you can buy the Lugermorph I real like Lugers

The problem isn't that it's over or underpowered. I was there when they made the pyro's backburner a +50HP, no falloff beast of a weapon and I dealt with it just fine until they (rightly) nerfed it.

The problem is that they are taking these super-rare, cosmetic-only items (which I'm fine with valve selling if it means continued TF2 support) and tying ingame effects to them. This is what worries me. If people let this fly, what will Valve try next?

Which is why they're renaming them "Vintage" hats. So people who already have them can still show off.

Which carries with it a stigma all on its own. If I fly around town on my Celestial Steed in WoW, everyone knows I paid money for it, as opposed to I don't know, earning the rarest in-game drop. Here, you can just pretend to be uber.

It's still blatant hypocrisy, and to give Valve a tongue bath over it is laughable.

They said they would add stats to the items at the end of the Polycount contest. So it was already known these things would have stats.

But you don't need to buy anything. You can still play the game as you were and nothing would really be changed.

And we're not being fanboys here. We're pointing out how this really isn't as big a deal as everyone is making it out to be.

Excuse me while I shed a tear for the end of America's #1 war-themed hat simulator.

(Although I guess I can't think poorly of people giving ValvE money.)
