This Tuesday I was ruffling through my atic; looking for some old games and found The Orange Box.
I originally got it for Half life & portal, but on Tuesday i thought i'd give TF2 a go. (why i didnt at the time is another story...) After some stressful moments with Steam; *sigh* I got it up and running.

Reading up on chat and other sites, is see lots of "complaints" about updates and how much they changed the game. Personally i feel games like Team Fortress and Counter Strike have had their day; pushed out by ModerenWarfare.
I'm enjoying the game so far but I cant help but wonder if the game is being kept alive by fans and not in demand.

Are things still going strong? and any thoughts on what to expect in coming patches?
Well considering that counter strike is still easily the biggest competition based fps around, I would say... no their days are going fine.

Yes I can, first off I do not own this game and have never played it, but from what I have seen it look smooth and simplistic as if they where concentrating on gameplay more than graphics. Gameplay is obviously more imprtant than graphics and they decided to go with a cartoony look which is fine, I personally like my game to look good and play good.
FYI: I don't know how old TF2 is so maybe it was great back in the day.
Pretty much the opposite. The team invented their own cel-shading graphics algorithms that take each character through about 5 different methods of lighting. They do this specifically so that everyone is distinctly visible and recognizable even at range or low lighting, AND so that they don't look comparatively "low-res" after the game has been out for several years.

Another thing I want to offer up is this being the very last good game for Dedicated Servers. MW and BC both have company-managed servers (even if BC2's are "rented out") whereas TF2 I could set something up on my desktop while I'm away if I wanted. It really is the best way of forming a community or having a mod.

Ever play a game where everyone gets a random weapon? The lucky ones play as a Scout with a rocket launcher.
So they made it look cartoony so that it would look cartoony later that way they don't have to make a new game because cartoons characters don't need to be hi-res? As far as Dedicated servers go I personally feel they are chaotic and immature.

Well, ryai, tell me how much The Simpsons' basic character graphics have improved in 10 years. Not much. They don't really need to - and call it lazy, but it does save efforts without worsening the overall product. If I'm honest, you're sort of striking me as the type who would roll your eyes at someone using the AutoFill feature of excel rather than typing out the data manually. If it saves time and still looks good, what's the problem?

Also, your experience with Dedicated Servers is obviously limited. Whether or not the server is Dedicated does not affect the maturity level of players. And it's been nearly PROVEN that PC gaming communities are less prone to hate speech and racism than big-pool matchmaking services.

TF2 is being kept alive because it is a team based FPS game, something which MW2 could never hope to be.

ModernWarfare has promoted nothing but senseless kill hoarding, lonewolfing, and glory hunting through bunny hopping, noobtoobing, and nade spamming. its very mechanic of 'Kill Streaks' throws out any single symbolince of team play the game could of fostered in favor of high scores and big booms. and though this is a style of gameplay which is popular, mostly amongst Console players, it hardly has 'pushed out TF2' and other games of its like.

TeamFortress promotes team play, working together, and tactical thinking through defending, attacking, or flanking. sure you can lone wolf or glory hoard, but that doesn't win you games. a bunch of average players working together can easily beat out a bunch of pro players whom arn't. and that is what Makes TF2 great, and continues to make it great.

the thing which is acctually pushing TF2 out the door is games with more focus on Co-op (Borderlands/Left4Dead) and epic play (BF:BC2/MAG) which allows in depth team play in much more grandois ways.

Well I just got it this week, so nope, still not old for me. And I'm too stubborn to quit just because I'm getting owned by the pros.

How are servers that are governed by the people playing instead of having to use a ban system from the company immature? You will never get a company run game with less cheats and mic spammers than people who run their own servers.

The Escapist server has a few admins on at any time, if anyone starts mic spamming they are silenced within a minute, kicked if necessary. Servers that the people playing have no control over are the ones that are chaotic and full of immature behaviour as there are no consequences, dedicated servers are the complete opposite.

As long as there is fan demand, it's day will remain. By golly, I know plenty of people who love it, and I do too, so Valve will keep it alive for us.

Well clearly 360 and PS3 version, we need to say no more.

PC version, VALVe show no sign of slowing down the number of updates, particularly with the new community content. The art style is timeless, and then underlying graphics, (i.e lighting and such) are still acceptable, so no problems there. A huge playerbase the seems to still be growing. One advantage is it's now so cheap, (extra so on sales), and easy to play on old PC's, that ALL my friends have it, 1/3 have MW2, 1/2 have BFBC2, but if we want a big game, TF2 is the place to go. It has few real competitors, MW2 is a very different type of FPS, lone wolf based, BFBC2 has very different teamwork.

IT WILL GO OUT OF DATE

Let's make that clear, but VALVe will step in and make TF3 or an equivalent to fill the gap before we need to worry.

If they ever make a Team Fortress 3 or any other shooter as silly as that im sure people will move on over to that, untill then if it still has players it must be good.
Ho ho ho.
Players =/= quality game, just means people who prefer to play it for whatever reason.

Personally I gave TF2 a spin only last year and could not see what it was all about. The maps were okay, the class selection wasn't anything special and so on. Back when it was unique, I'm sure it was great, but considering the amount of class based shooters there are out, I have to say I've played class shooters which look better, better map design, better gameplay etc.
I think some people have played it so much they are really good at it and don't want to start from scratch with another game.

it still is unique, what other class based shooters are you talking about? i have never seen another game balance classes nearly as well as they have been balanced in this. each class has a completed different playing style its own weaknesses and strengths that no other class has.. what other classed based shooters are out there that have balanced the classes so perfectly?
Killzone 2. Resistance 2 also offers a complete custom class choice with your choice of weapons and power-ups/whatever they are called.
i havnt played either of those games as they are Playstation exclusives, but they are still nothing like tf2 from what i have seen and heard. "custom class" MW2 has custom classes does that make it a class based shooter? to compare tf2 to these systems is to completely miss the point of what tf2 is doing, its created custom classes that NEED the other classes to work together with them, otherwise your bound to fail.

I expect TF2 to keep going for decades to come. MW2 on the other hand I think will be pretty much dead within 2 years.
This.

MW2 appeals to the short attention span payers who will blindly buy the next game when it's released in 2 years or so. By contrast, Counterstrike and TF2 have been going for years and years and will continue to run long after MW2 is dead and forgotten.

MW2 is not the pinnacle of all games everywhere forever people. It is not the holy grail of shooters.

Custom Classes =/= Balanced specialised classes

In games where you create class all the classes are similar, even in say, BFBC2 with set classes, they are similar.

In TF2 the skills to be an engineer and a spy are totally different, their roles are totally different, and their skills are totally different. A good team NEEDS a mix of classes, in MW2 for example all can use assault rifles and be fine, and in BFBC2, while a mix of classes is needed, not to the same extent, and the skills, roles, and weaknesses are not as varied.

Not only does not having dedicated servers promote those thing (In my experience) it also discourages creativity from the community. Which is a terrible thing. Community which are able to create content for their respective games are more involved and livelier than others.

i agree with Delusibeta, to have dedicated servers you can have admins and rules etc. stuff that creates order, it stops the trolls. without dedicated servers you get a community such as the XBL one, now many many of those kids (i am sorry to those that dont fit into the general XBL category) would be kicked/banned/reported etc on dedicated servers. i have no idea how anyone could belive this system could create chaos and immaturity (admin abuse aside)

The only way dedicated servers could create chaos is if the community playing on them chose that, you can easily see the "all crits, cp_orange, 32 player, instant respawn" servers and know that they will be chaotic, dedicated servers are all about community. Better than peer to peer on every front as far as I can see.

A lot of gameplay elements from Team Fortess 2 are very similar to 'old-school' online FPSes: rocket jumping, obsession with shotguns, the old-style crosshair, you name it. So it feels pretty dated in a sense already imo.

I don't really play it much anymore, however. I was hoping that I would play the PC version more but it doesn't hold my attention as well as the 360 version.

Say that again and i'll break your face, mate!

Arlight, only kidding, but in all seriousness, so long as there are people playing the game, it'll stay alive, and considering the fact that games like CS:S and even Quake are still going it's likely that TF2 might go the way they have.
