I'm just gonna say that Team Fortress 2 is the shittest game I have played online.
As opposed to offline?
Well, the rest of the Orange Box is good, I love Half Life 2 and the Episodes, Portal is challenging and fun (can be annoying), but Team Fortress 2 is just boring when u compare it to other FPS games online.
Just wondering, what other FPS shooters? And be you on PC or consul?

PS3 (console obviously) and i'm saying compare it to COD4, COD WAW and Far Cry 2 even and Team Fortress 2 is just boring, theres not a lot of game modes, the graphics are too cartoony, not a lot of maps and why couldn't there be a guy with an assault rifle, fuck the Heavy and his crappy minigun.

You're all weird. I have a great time playing.

Of course the Heavy and Pyro are rather simple compared to the others, but they are good for new players.
Simple to play, very complex to master.

I'll have to disagree. The Pyro and Heavy do what they are meant to do (that is, Kill, Destroy, Exterminate) fairly easily, be it on their own or with a Doctor class helping. If there is one class that requires a little bit more than hand-eye coordination, then, that would be the Spy.

On-Topic: I don't think TF2 is Overrated; it's a rather unique game where the objective is not accomplished by just killing your enemies.

Oh, I'm not saying the Spy etc. isn't. Just that any fool can dish out damage; it takes a excellent player to use the Pyro as a sniper or a Spy follow up; just as a scout Sniper, Medic Melee, Sniper Heavy or Demo frontman.

I love TF2.

I love the art style, I love the way the game caters to varying skill levels and levels of co-operation and I love the way it helped my find my favourite community to date.

Ah, the TF2 community.

It really is massively polarised between some of the nicest people you'll ever meet (online at least) and people who seem intent on making it a vassal of 4chan.

I love the way it provokes huge community-wide debates/rants about balance and I love the support from Valve to provide new maps, modes and weapons.

I have no idea if it is overrated by others, I certainly haven't heard so before, but would certainly recommend it to just about anyone.

I've made a search, and it didn't turn anything up.

Team Fortress 2. A god amongst games for many here, but I don't understand its attraction.
It seems like just another average multiplayer shooter to me.
Because of the defined class system with distinct and balanced roles it stands apart from many games. How you play the spy, medic, or engineer (all of which I would argue are very unique classes in a shooter concept) is very distinct.

1) Gameplay: The gameplay to me was very repetitive and wasn't anything to talk about.
Each time you play a map, the same things happen, the rush to a certain point, a turret built in a certain point etc.
There are established strategies that are followed because they work, this is really more of a problem of more maps needed than anything. In all fairness the strategies get rumbled up depending on who plays and pretty much every shooter is victim of repetitive game-play (get gun shoot other guy... only so much in there to be built upon)

2) Everybody goes on about how everybody who plays Team Fortress 2 is great and nobody ever calls each other noobs, and there isn't any teabagging anywhere. I've played the game, and the conduct was the same as in any other multiplayer game.
I'm guessing by "everybody" you mean your friends who like TF2 and play it a lot. Well, they wouldn't be called noobs and there isn't a teabagging emote in the game (what the hell is with the teabagging and why does everyone care about it so much anyway?)

But if you believed that... welcome to the internet, it's nice to see you moved out from under that rock. Seriously, that was a naive assumption.

It's not a bad game by any means, but there wasn't anyhting special about it in my view. To me it's an average game in a sea of average games

(I loved everything else on the Orange Box by the way)
TF2 is one of the most balanced strategic games on the market, and this isn't a plug I don't really play TF2. Besides the overall balancing, there was expert level design, distinctive palettes and technical application, clear silhouettes for every class, and a play system that is easily accessible to a wide variety of players.

Alright, it's not your bag, that's fine, but there isn't a very strong case for saying it is anything but a top notch game that drove (and is driving) the FPS genre forward (which was really what the Orange box was all about). It does not offer itself to user created content as readily as other titles, it's not easy to change because it is so balanced (every time a class is adjusted, the whole game gets messed up), and once a winning strategy is defined the map is basically useless to people looking for varied game-play (again, normal FPS problem)

But there is more to it than that, and individual preference isn't enough, in my opinion, to define a game's overall value and quality.

The way I see it, most (if not all) games are repetitive, you do almost the exact same thing every single level. I thought that's why people played games, for the simple repetitiveness that distracts you from everything else. That is essentially what Pong was, repetitive. So Team Fortress 2 seems (to me) to be a completely normal game...(wait isn't the topic over-hyping?) Well, I didn't hear much about it until I actually bought The Orange Box (and I see a lot of adverts) and frankly, I liked the game when I started playing it. As far as the multiplayer conduct goes, most of it, on both the computer and Xbox, was pretty much the same as you'd find in Halo (i.e. running around randomly firing your gun and talking trash to an annoying extent), most of the time (emphasis on most), but not always. I have been in some servers where the people were very friendly and strategic. Also, I feel that the Engineer could be a bit overpowered sometimes, since some people place them in places that make them hard to kill unless you send an armada out, and even then you might not survive.

I think my avatar says it all.
It's FUN! I don't know why.

All the classes are balanced, you don't have one particularly strong class or one particularly weak class, if you know how to play it, they all work well.

It's fast paced, as soon as you spawn you're pretty much thrown straight into the action.

It's funny as well. There are so many good things about it, I don't think it's overrated at all.

It depends what you mean by overrated.

Everyone has an opinion, and there will be people who rate TF2 higher than you do, just as there will be those with a lower opinion of it.

I think that TF2 does get a little bit too much praise (like many of the games by Valve).

The whole idea of various, well balanced classes bringing new and interesting challanges to every game works well in theory, but in practice it has more than a few issues.

Firstly, from my own observation I have found that around %60 of players elect to be the engineer and no-one else (on more than one occasion I have had to go up against an entire team of eng's), all balance is thrown out of the window and onto the pavement below around about the point when you are forced to run a gauntlet of computer controlled turrets just to get to the enemie's front door (never mind the objective).

Since each class has a dramaticly different style of gameplay the introduction of newer players takes much longer than it really should which penalises them without a good reason (in short, it is a bit elitist).

It doesn't matter how you put it, you are still just endlessly playing CTF in a closed space against people with different colour uniforms. You would have to be very biased to think that TF2 is unique in any way.

Overall, I acknowledge the fact that Valve put a lot of effort into designing this game and tried to have very specific roles that work well together to enhance the gameplay, where they fell down was that they failed to acknowledge that sometimes having a simple 'kill the other guys' fest is the best way to go since it's simple, fun and it works.

You see, that their is your problem, call me elitist if you want, but TF2 is a PC game, that EA happend to port onto PS3/360 on Valves behalf. Hense, you don't have custom maps, or any of the new ones released, or any of the additional game modes that have come out and added great variety of play (Payload is my favourate, has to be said). If you don't like cartoony graphics, well that just personal taste.

A few people from "serious" shooters always complain theirs no one with an assault rifle, but I honestly don't miss it, its such an average, mediocre weapon, why would you want that when you can choose from a sniper rifle, rocket launcher, grenade launcher, flame thrower, etc from the moment you spawn? Most games that have assault rifles have people racing for the rocket launchers and sniper rifles so they can "WTFPWN!" some noobs.

I will accept graphics come down to a personal opinion and I play a lot of "serious" shooters lol, but in the end, the assault rifle is top gun and I hate rocket launchers, grenade launchers and flamethrowers, sniper rifles are ok and in Far Cry 2, u have a weapon set u must keep and u cant race to pick up rocket launchers, grenade launchers etc, so Far Cry 2 is a good online game, so how much more is there on the PC version of TF2???
