Imagine this. I'm going to paint a picture with my words here.
Imagine the Halo series...but DARKER. Like the same enemies, plot, weapons and characters, just not the bright, sunny, cheery graphics and noises. Say the graphics of CoD: WaW, but for the Halo series.
Give me your opinion.. tell me if that's not a good picture.
A similar game was already made. It's called Doom 3, you might have heard of it. No one liked that idea either.
Not really.
That was at least competent at what it did. It at least had the right atmosphere for what it was presenting. It was presenting Hell, demons, zombies and futuristic-ness. If I remember Halo's plot right, it goes something like,

Aliens think rings will save them. Kill humans to get it to save them. Rings actually made to stop flood by cutting off food supply. This means all things in universe die. MC stops them WAHEY!!. That seems pretty dark and evil yeah? Destroy EVERYTHING!?
Right, but the game itself doesn't reflect that. It's all bright and sunny. Doom3 had a story that was dark and evil and involved Hell. This was seen in the game. With the dark corridors and tense atmosphere. That's what I'm saying Halo should've done.

Competence issues was not really what I was getting at.

Doom and Doom II were games that were based around the spectacle. The ability to blast the crap out of demons and then when a change of pace was desired, blast the crap out of someone who could actually think. I.E. another person. The atmosphere for Doom was perfect in it's original form. Comically, over-the-top gore and the ability to splatter demons or your friends. Halo did pretty much the same thing for Console FPS' that Doom did for the genre as a whole. Stylized FPS fun, with the option to shoot your friends instead of A.I. controlled aliens. (No, stop. Do not mention Goldeneye. It did not do this.)

The point is that changing the atmosphere of Doom hurt the series. It may have been done competently, but it was still a poor choice regardless. Bumping around in dark corridors and having things jump out at you is not what Doom players wanted. And I seriously doubt that Halo players want that either. They are perfectly happy blasting each other with multi-colored bizarro weapons, and that is as it should be. And before anyone suggests it, this would be a bad idea for God of War as well.

If time has taught us anything, it's that re-inventing the wheel is unnecessary and wholly futile.

Fair enough point actually. Okay. What about my idea, but NOT tied to the Halo setting. Original plot, original locations, original weapons and original enemies. What would you think then??

You'd better start calling me a drug addict. Just please let Halo die!

Sounds like an even more depressing version of Gears of War from a first person perspective. You fail, and I'm not a drug-addict.

Okay... Let me clarify.
The elites are cool and everything, but imagine a big snarling beast with a gun and the same armour, not the well-spoken, logical race we have.
Sorry... you want to take the ONLY awesome thing about Halo and fuck it up? No thanks.

You mean..A first-person Gears of War?
No. It sounds absolutely terrible. A huge part of the Halo appeal is the whole 'Starship Troopers' kitsch thing.

i've never played halo, and so have nothing to base this on.

i do enjoy dark imagery though. makes everything so much fun.

just so long as it doesn't look realistic. i tend to be ill at the site of too much gore.

Nope, doesn't sound that interesting. And I don't do drugs. Halo is for big, stupid piles of fun, not dark and compelling stories and graphics.
That pretty much sums up my opinion of Halo. I actually like to play a game, especially an FPS, every now and then that dóesn't use the same ol' 'gunmetal gray & shitbrown' colour pallet. Popping the heads of poor little Grunts with the Party skull never gets old.

no more dark games! BOYCOTT! Halo is great in that it takes themes that usually gets placed in dark environments and throws them into the light. If they made the game originally as a dark game I don't believe it would have ever achieved it's mass market appeal.
Hear hear! I still play Halo now and again, flawed as it may or may not be, because it's one of the only shooters out there that doesn't choose entirely from a palette of gray, brown, and black (looking at you, Gears of War)!

Oh no you fucking didn't. Let's sum some things up, shall we?

Over the course of this thread, you've insulted various people for not liking your shitty generic idea, and when people have tried to figure out what you're going on about, you've just insulted them more. Then, on top of all that, you dragged BioShock into it, and insulted BioShock callously.

My data gives me no conclusion other than you being a fool. Good day.

P.S. BioShock had quite a bit of color.
