These are terrible AAA games, they aren't terrible games but they have no right to be called AAA when they try to be two things at once (most of them) and thus kill one of those things in exchange for the other or they just try too hard or too little.

Gears of War
Gears of War 2
Gears of War 3 (Yeah I went there.)
Halo Reach (Hello my name is multiplayer and I am the entire basis of this game)
Last Remnant
Blue Dragon
Eternal Sonata
Call of Duty (Every other)
Red Alert 3
Command & Conquer 4
StarCraft 2
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
Dragon Age 2
Resistance (All of them)
Civilization V
Aeon
Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2
The Witcher (But was it AAA?)
Quake IV
Killzone
Killzone 2
Killzone 3
Prototype
Uncharted
Uncharted 2
inFamous
Metal Gear Solid 4
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Halo Wars (All it has for it is the cinematics)
Team Fortress 2
Counterstrike (Don't get me started)
But... but...

but I like half of these games!

/wimper

On a serious note, I think a good half of your list is based on personal dislike as opposed to whether it has any merit as a game.

StarCraft 2
World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
Dragon Age 2
Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead 2
inFamous
Metal Gear Solid 4
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I'm sure many will agree with me that for their price point and publicity, most of us that played these games loved them and did not feel like we wasted our money. Sure there are flaws, all games have them, but for a game to be liked despite them shows that there's something even better within.

Dante's Inferno, on the other hand... why Visceral wasted their talents and ad budget on that garbage I have no idea. It raped both Dante Alighieri and God of War.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the OP, but if I'm not, then I'm gonna have to call shenanigans on quite a few of the posts in this topic (get your brooms!).

The OP was asking what AAA games were well-received by the reviewers, but more-or-less universally hated by gamers as a whole (in other words, not games that you personally hate).

Granted, in the end it's even harder to answer that question as there isn't as solid of a way to quantify what gamers universally think. Like someone early on in here mentioned StarCraft II in a list. I've heard that some gamers didn't like the lack of LAN support, but I've never honestly heard any true hatred for it. Quite a lot of praise, actually. So I'm not really sure where the person who posted that was coming from, other than possibly personal disappointment.

As it stands, because of the absurdity of trying to give an accurate answer to the original question, many of the posts in this topic mostly seem to just be about personal dislike and assumptions about how many people agree with them.

Wroooooooonnnnnngggggggg! So the gaming community universally hate almost all AAA games? No they do not.
So, can you come up with one?
Final Fantasy X-2.

Now, if you feel there isn't a lot of discussion value in these kinds of threads why bother posting in them? Coming in and just listing games you hate isn't answering the OP's question, so what's the point in posting in the first place?
Its a hard question to answer, and usually it will just go into a thread of WHY I HATE AAA TITLES BLAH! Well, until Final Fantasy X-2 is out, we will just have to hate on Final Fantasy 13.
Anyways, HIGH FIVE FOR SIMILAR THOUGHT! *High Fives*
Its not that it doesn't have discussion value, its just that the discussion value decreasing per post.

Near universal? Nope. Nothing is near universal for gamers except maybe that Superman 64 sucked and so did ET. (Even that is really only agreed on by people who have heard of the games).

Don't you think this thread is getting a little silly, I mean there is actually very bad games that are horrible to play like Deus Ex: Invisible War, Kane and Lynch 2 and Daikatana

I won't even put Final Fantasy 13 and Dragon Age 2 on that list becuase although I disliked them I know a lot of people enjoyed them.

By listing the game that you personally don't like becuase of preference you are clouding the issue of actual 'bad' games. I think the problem is that actual bad games are forgotten very easily.

fffff. Finally someone who understand the point of the thread...v-v

iunno, though. Daikatana was so hilariously bad that it looped around and became good.

That is a LOT of games, what games DO you like. You've covered pretty much every genre there! Now, I want you to give me a reason for your hate, on EVERY game on the list individually. I also want you to tell me if you have even played half of the games on that list.

OT: I would say, that NO AAA games are good, nor terrible. Some ones I hate, but that is in my eyes. Some ones everyone hates, but that still doesn't mean there terrible because someone will always like a game.
That's only a few games and I'm sure there's a bit more and yes I've played all the games that come out.

The individual reason's are iterated somewhere in this thread.

I think he posted in the wrong thread, of the games there that can be considered AAA none got "spectacular" reviews and the rest are average non AAA titles.

I'm going to go ahead and bold all of the non AAA titles for reference.

Although there are a few outliers there that are well received AAA titles with good reviews.
Those are actually considered AAA and almost all of them are made by multi-AAA publishers. Your opinion aside those games do not have the quality that triple A signifies.

I find it hilarious the amount of people have missed the point of this thread. Clearly people have just read the title and not the OP and just came in belting out AAA game they hate.

Like this one.

Final Fantasy 7 and up.
So Final Fantasy 7 is universally hated by the gaming community is it? That's why it's considered the best one by most people. And before you say I'm defending it, I'm not I think it's one of the most overrated games in gaming.

Is that in the gaming community of make believe?

Read the damn OP people. Here's a bit of it for you.

Are there any AAA games that have gotten really high score from critics, but the gaming community has near-universally derided as being horrible?
I read it, I still posted my points because I could and the gaming community is vague in general as they never are ALL against anything.

Like them if you like, I never said they weren't possibly good games, but they are missing serious quality standards or make sacrifices for things that aren't even necessary and only erode the game itself.

The only one that comes to mind is World of Warcraft: Cataclysm. All the major reviewers gave it perfect/near perfect scores but it is for the most part hated by the community and WoW has lost over 1 million subscribers since release.

Are we allowed to make predictions?

If so:

XCOM (reboot)
i disagree. i watched some gameplay video, and it surprisingly looked pretty good, one just has to throw away the "it's XCOM, it's supposed to be a strategy game!!!" approach (and all the x-com world facts with it). it's got the name only because creating "new franchise" is so "risky" these days...
http://www.somethingawful.com/d/news/populous-syndicate-xcom.php

I believe it (XCOM) will garner favourable reviews from the gaming 'press', but be derided and hated by fans of the original and others sick of cut-and-paste cookie cutter playstyles.
Using a classic IP as a 'safety net' is stupid and counter-productive, fans of the original will follow the name, only to be bitterly disappointed in yet another FPS with tacked on 'features', non fans or youngsters won't give a shit about the name.

Michael Bay releases a gritty action movie titled 'Back to the Future' featuring a hardboiled time commando who executes those that mess with the timestream. You just have to throw away everything you remember about Doc, Marty, the Delorean and the Flux Capacitor.

I like the good games, I even like the bad ones sometimes, but I just can't stand it when the best developers release things without real quality whether it be overridden by bugs and crashes, poor implementation, or a design flaw that makes dying "normal" and thus you'll rack up numerous deaths and immersion is gone in an instant. Poor balancing, poor design, and repetitive qualities annoy me.

Almost all games have those but they usually have them only after a few playthroughs.

I'm a fan of anything with very good story.

When I first saw this thread when it had zero replies I knew it was going to turn into people just saying which games they don't like...turns out I was right. These threads always end up like that, people ignore the title or the OP and just say which popular games they hate for the sake of hate.

They always become unconstructive hate and arguing.

You didn't name any games, just your criteria for a good and bad game.

And considering that everyone has a different criteria, your post doesn't create any answers and simply creates more questions.

All you've done is posted games you dislike because in your opinion they lack quality. While I'm not bothered about what you think of said games as that's your choice, that isn't what the OP is asking. Out of all the games you listed I can only think of 2 that got great scores from reviewers but the gaming community near-universally disliked and that is of course the two obvious ones: Call of Duty and Halo. I should probably give an honourable mention to Dragon Age II considering that was kind of in the middle ground on reviews, but whatever.

I don't blame you for coming here and belting out games you dislike, as ChupathingyX said, these threads always turn into that eventually. I just simply don't see the point in posting in the thread at all if you're not going to post an answer to the question the OP is asking.
