Memes that revolve around quotes together re-insertion of nouns and verbs are mostly intolerable because of their repetition and stupidity. I can understand the general hatred of memes because of being context specific in some cases and requiring preknowledge of the subject matter, but repeated phrases like that are the worst.
The cake is a lie doesn't mean anything, there's no joke to be had there. Even understanding the context doesn't make it funny.
The arrow+knee thing could have been funny if it revolved around guards having bad knee armor or something, but instead we just get a repeated phrase. The phrase being repeated and annoying in the game so often was the original joke, but then it became so repeated and redone on the internet that it became annoying again.
"I never asked for this." Doesn't really work unless you're using it as a response to something. Toufexis's delivery is rather charming however.
For example Ocean Marketing scandal, Geico's take on it was tweeting "we will never wwebsite as on the internet." You wonder: "where the fuck does that come from?" so then you read up and learn about Ocean Marketing and silly Christoforos (whatever his name is) and begin to understand the situation.
The xzibit meme can be applied to context (like Inception) which makes it slightly more creative.
I don't know, I probably have a double standard of sorts in regards to this. Cause I've been using this quite often.
"They say ____ can do terrible things to a mind. It can wipe away your memories and destroy your very identity."
Points to those who know what that's from without looking it up.
