He was not a fundamentalist AFAIK. But I wonder how long it takes conspiracy-nuts to to start to scream when they learn he was a freemason.
Indeed. To be honest, there is going to be an insane amount of speculation and conspiracy theories, simply because the case doesn't "fit" with the expectations of most of the western world, and media, in fact. I do think he had motives, and I very much believe they were political and not religious, but to be honest, Obama's statement in support of Norway really assumed Al Qaida involvement (as did the BBC coverage).
He did indeed have political motives. He was active at a far-right forum (document.no) and had several times expressed his opposition against multiculturalism, immigration etc, the things the labour party, and its youth organization, stood for.

Yeah, um, when you have a 'moderator' tag next to your name, you can tell me what I'm 'entitled to' do here.
I just want this to stay on topic, since it almost got derailed by religion vs. religion discussions earlier.

So please discuss the topic at hand.
Well, I appreciate that, and I did not wish to derail this thread, but at 19 pages long, I think it has had its run. Regardless, not everybody can follow these discussions in real time. As such, there will always be latecomers, and that is me. All our words are immortalised here, after all.

In my prior post, I included you not because my comments were in support of you. If you are, as you wrote on previous pages, supportive of that fact that Muslims as a whole must not be stigmatised for the acts of a few, then I hope you can see that in my post. Also I am certain if you re-read my original post, you'll see that it wasn't born of 'religion vs' sentiment at all.

However, I do see that discussion of Islamic terrorism is appropriate to the topic as a whole, considering that the atmosphere of hate (and also Zeitgeist of the post-9/11, Western world) appears to have inspired this massacre.

We reap what we sow.

I wish there was something I could have done for this to not happen....I know I shouldn't , but I feel guilty for not seeing what monster he really was , is this normal or I should go to a shrink?:S
This is completely normal behavior for anyone who in any has ever talked with someone doing horrible acts. All I can say is that this is absolutely not your fault, and you know this just as good as me. There is nothing you could've done, and I'm sure not even the people who knew him personally knew he was capable of doing such horrible acts.

I suggest you give it a week, and if you still feel horribly guilty (which you have no reason whatsoever to do) you should perhaps try seeing someone.

To be honest I just skimmed your post and thought: Oh no, not this again!

I haven't slept all night and was slightly irritated. I'm sorry for that.
Also, I can see why it would be appropriate, but I'd prefer that we refrain from involving it in the thread.

And I re-read your post, nothing harmful about it, but like I said; I'm tired. x)

Around 15:20 GMT+1, today (22.07), several explosions went off in Oslo, Norway. The cause is still unknown, and the casualties are unknown, but feared to be large. The bombs went off near the government buildings, blowing windows out of many buildings are starting fires.

The Prime Minister is in safety.

2 hours after the bombs went off, a person dressed as a police officer got on an island called Utøya outside Oslo and started shooting the people on the island. There was a large youth camp there with over 600 kids and young adults were attending a Labor Party Youth event.
The person is arrested, nordic appearence and speaking norwegian. 10 people have been confirmed dead from the shooting.

Fear and Beware are two distinct terms that most people never seem to realize.
That is one of the most awesome quotes I have ever seen. Yours or someone else's?

Man! I don't know how this will sound, but I'm sick of this shit! You'd think we would've evolved and grown past this rampant destruction.

Anyway, I hope an online donation center is put up soon. An ocean separates me from direct aid, but I'd like to give all the help I can to the hurt and to the families of the dead.

They just confirmed it on TV2!

This is the shooter and the man behind the bombs!
https://twitter.com/#!/AndersBBreivik

He sees himself as a conservative christian and nationalist, and may have relations within the extreme right-wing.
Just saw it too, so confirmed. What a magnificent christian... killing children for their political affiliation... wonder what part of his faith covers that. Im disgusted he can even consider himself christian. Doesnt make my and other true christians life easy.
uuuggghhh....you know a fuck ton of people are going to ***** about how Christianity was behind this even though the attack was probably politically motivated and the act of one mentally unstable asshole who just happened to consider himself christian....even though this is 2011 and Christians don't truly act like this. (neither do ACTUAL Muslims either)

hell it even happened on this thread before people knew who did it!
But we reap what we sow. People will reach the conclusion you mentioned and draw those connections because that's the kind of thinking currently rewarded by our sensationalist, fast food culture. Far too much reasoning, wisdom and logic is required here than what our Twitter-sized thoughts have been conditioned to take.

Oh, I can see the sound bites and catchy headlines too. Of course it was because he was Christian! people will cry. OR, they will attest that it was solely political and Christianity had nothing to do with it. And they'll say so with no sense of irony at all, for all the bashing done previously against Muslims and Jews.

There'll be a tonne of fingers pointing, knee-jerk bannings of various 'harmful influences', a cacophony of raised voices, and most likely nothing much will change because of it. In a few weeks, somebody else will commit an atrocity to draw our attention, and then ... 'goto 10'.

The worst part is that all the tragedy and pain will become ammunition for so many private agendas. It's insulting.

(PS, I think that Twitter feed is an example of such exploitation. I can only see one tweet and the photo is from the same batch used in the papers. Correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe he was new to Twitter.)

My heart goes out to those affected by the vicious attacks in Norway. Is there any way for those unaffected by the disaster to help?

For anyone listening, how violent is the right-wing rhetoric in Norway? I ask because I cannot help draw a connection between the recent attempted assassination Senator Gabby Giffords and members of ther entourage and this, catestrophic event.

There isn't any. We don't have radical, militant organisations or groups in our country. Or if we do, they are not vocal or serious enough to be heard by the public.
Norway isn't like the US. We're a small, peaceful and innocent nation. Nobody here could ever have dreamed of something like this.

Violence committed by neo-nazies and right-wing nuts is AFAIK very low here, until now. Besides, the shooter was a norwegian nationalis, so there is most likely no connetction to an assassination attempt in the US.
