The Scout.

Probably Scout. Not only would I enjoy his company, but he's loudly violent. The other eight classes could pretty much blend into a crowd and not cause a scene. A lanky kid hopped-up on energy drinks, waving a baseball bat around and throwing out insults on every other breath is a sure sign not to get close to me.
I agree with you.

The Heavy, of course. He's hilarious, and he has a huge gun. He can take a lot of hits too.
Hopefully he's not partial to small talk.

The Announcer. Who's going to come within 20 feet of somebody shouting "STALEMATE!"

Engineer.
I mean the sentry gun, the free health and metal... you could make a fortune!
And you wouldn't have to walk to work.

Depends. Does real life have friendly fire?

Assuming it does, and I am going to need to hunker down in my house while this crazed assassin is on the loose, Engineer easily. Sentry gun protecting me is great, but even that is the least impressive bit. More importantly, the Dispenser is there to supply me with things like food, supplies, and even medical attention. I would never have to leave my well fortified room. And even if something does go wrong, and I have to escape or travel somewhere, I have a teleporter. All I need is a security camera (which I'm sure the engineer could help with) on the outside of my house to make sure that if they come with explosives, I can teleport away in seconds, and him in a few seconds longer, and then we can fortify our new position in a few seconds more. Short of a missile, I would be golden.

I would give him $5 extra an hour if he said "BONK!" every 15 minutes.
Agreed. forget guarding me, just saying "BONK!" would be enough.

In terms of practicality and guarding me, Heavy would be the best, he is friggin huge. And just look at the gun he has!

The Pyro could in no way blend into a crowd. Besides his (her?) suit, I think the fact that he (she?) is classified a psychopath by Valve means that he ((God this is annoying) she?) would not be "Subtle".

Also, since I love me a good fire, the Pyro is my choice. Ah, chaos, how I love thee so.

Do we talk about balanced in-game classes,or about grossly overpowered characters from Meet the Team videos?

Sniper,Medic,Heavy,or Engineer. Sniper can easily kill him,and he's equipped with Kukri and Jarate. Medic can easily heal me and ubercharge me in a hard times. Heavy seems to be great choice for bodyguard, and Engineer can be useful if we just barricade in my house untill killers come to us and meet certain death themselves.

Most likely it would be Heavy or Medic, and if device can be used multiple times,Heavy+Medic pair.

Worst choice is obviously the Spy,because he's a double reverse quadruple agent, and never really was on your side.
