The Witcher. I picked it up for $30 bucks, said why not? Now I'm on my third playthrough of it and can't wait until the sequel

When I bought Resident Evil 4. I was actually really reluctant to buy it because I had just gotten out of a very bad relationship with Resident Evil: Outbreak, but the thing had beaten the original God of War for Game of the Year. How could I resist? Today, it remains my all time favorite.

Oh yes, for me that had to be Psychonauts. Impulse purchase when it was $2US on Steam. A flawed masterpiece, that game is. Reminded me so much of the platformers I used to play on my N64 when I was in primary school; Banjo-Kazooie especially. I only just realised how similar they are: platformer with good characterisation, unique themed levels connected by a hub world, each level gets you a new skill, which requires heavy use of it to finish that level and the list goes on. The only difference is that only one had a decent sequel. :(

I TRIED to buy Red Faction Geurilla, but I didn't have any fucking ID. Played it at a friend though, lots of fun.

Actually, no. Orange Box. Found it at a flee market, loved Portal and Team Fortress 2, and managed to complete Half-Life 2 and all it's bastard offspring as a point of pride.

OH YES, OH YES, I've been waiting for this question for so long

I don't tend to buy games as an afterthought, but that only makes mine all the more special:

Rome: Total War,

Played it, loved it, forgot about it for a couple years, bought it cause I was bored, and 200 hours of only campaign gameplay later, I'm still addicted

It's also the game I thank for getting me into RTS's in the first place, and now RTS's make up at least 60% of my game time, WOW did Rome change my life and interpretation of video games as a whole.

I bought Battlefield: Bad Company when planning to buy Frontlines: Fuel of War. They were the same price, so I got Bad Company instead. Love that game.

Ninja Town.

Found this is a Block Buster sidewalk pre-owned trash sale
It's an incredible little RTS for the nintendo ds featuring cute
chibi-ninja, but what I wasn't expecting was some fantastic
pop-culture jokes that had me in stitches.

Both recently, I saw Crackdown in the bargain bin, bought it, and it turned to out to hilariously fun. Not too deep, but good mindless fun and explosions for only $5.

Just the other day I bought Red Dead Redemption after never really bothering to read anything about it, I never really liked GTA, but I do like Westerns, and I've really been into sandbox games lately, so I bought. Wow. This game is freaking great, I may even like it more than Mass Effect 2, my favorite game of the year so far. Seriously, great game.

I bought World of Goo on a steam sale for 5$. Then 7 hours later I wondered if my watch was broken and why it was all dark outside.

One of the best games I've ever played.

Witcher Limited Edition for 20?. I loved it, and even my girlfriend liked watching me play it. Also, the map that came with it hangs on the door to my room.

Civilization Revolution for the 360. Laugh as much as you want I still enjoy playing it to this day, just because I find it so dam calming. If I want a challenge then difficulty levels scale up appropriately and I enjoy everything from visuals to simply how you can mess around
(Was good fun trying to make enough destroyer fleets to cover every ocean square, coming up around 1/3 short and piled a few hundred units into a single square, lag-tastic).

Hours of innocent and pure fun.

It was years ago, a game called Abe's Odysey, which you might know because it's an awesome platformer that's won a bunch of awards and stuff. I bought it because it was bundled with this other game called Excalibur 2099 or something like that. The Excalibur game turned out to be a forgettable piece of drivel and Abe's Odysey was, well, Abe's Odysey.
