Do you know anything that at first sounds really cool until you know what it really is?

For example Plasma cutting...I thought that sounded cool, until I found out it was basicly cutting metal with an ingreadably hot stream of argon.

What are you on? That STILL sounds cool.

The names of chemicals can be very misleading. Dihydrogen monoxide, for example. What does that sound like? Some crazy chemical found near the center of the earth? Nah. It's just water. Good ole H2O.

I can't think of anything right now, but may I ask a question?

What did you expect plasma cutting to be, and how is cutting metal with an ionized argon stream not awesome?

Also: Wait, what? Plasma is ionized gas, right? How can you ionize argon?

I don't know if this is the way they do it in the industry, but getting it really, really, REALLY hot would do the trick. Pressure would play a part too but it's been 2 years since I did the physics of electrons and even then I really wasn't concentrating so I don't know if youd want high or low pressure.

Like Plasma Cutting (and Water Cutting, same thing but instead of using plasma you use plain water to cut steel), this is still awsome when you find out what it is.

For my contribution: Zero Point energy. Half Life makes it sound awsome what with it being able to change gravity and all... yeah it's basically just describing something that's really cold. Meh.

Anything made by Disney that isn't a cartoon or film made by Pixar.

You mean to tell me that you've only liked 11 "Disney" movies? You didn't even like the classics? Cuhraaazy.

OT: Supervision.

Argon is a gas?
Argon is a Noble gas, atomic number 18 on the image of the Periodic Table below (hiddenin the spoiler tag). Being a Noble gas (also called "inert elements" in the picture) means it, like every other element in the dark orange column on the far right, has a full outer electron shell and is therefore a very stable element; it won't participate in reactions easily. This also means it is hard to ionise it (ionising being the addition or removal of electrons) because the atom would "prefer" to have an outer shell and not be one short or one over. Technically turning it into Plasma means it stops being a gas, similar to how boiling water stops it from being liquid anymore, but Argon at room temperature and presure is a gas.

lol, marriage

Well NASCAR is so cool it has a 6-letter abbreviation, but watching it can be simulated by flushing a bag of M&Ms down the toilet.

Biology class was full of this.

"There is plasma in your blood!"

"Your Helper T-Cells destroy viruses before they spread in your body, shooting them with antigens then wrapping around their corpses and eating them."

"Binary Fission!"

I am so using this from now on. Thank-you.

Osmosis! Oh great, the movement of water from a dilute to a concentrated solution through a membrane... yay.

Ok when you say it like that it sounds pritty cool. I don't know I guess I thought of a bigger thing when I read it...sign games and movies distorting my perception of cool things.

There's another one! Membrane. Semi-permeable membrane.

Ribosomes.

I'm sure there were more but my brain is going through a Biolocaust and is purging the inferior knowledge that I have no more use for.
