People will probaby label me a weirdo for saying this, but I have a very old-school "old enough to bleed, old enough to breed" mentality; as long as they've hit puberty, I don't have issue with them doing the deed... under the correct circumstances, of course (for example, two 12-year-olds who had an arranged marriage), and within a country/society's legality.

So you need to marry someone to have sex with them? Do two 18 year-olds need to be married to have sex? It seems like you're putting you're personal sensibilities into this. I respect that you said that that your views are your own, and not indisputable fact, but I certainly hope you don;t ever become a lawmaker with such an opinion. Marriage? Who's going to pay for that? The parents? Why should they? People being tied to the bonds of marriage when they've just reached puberty? I, personally, would vote against such a bill if I were a politician.

I wasn't focussing so much on the actual marriage aspect. I'm currently studying anthropology in college and was simply using the "young arranged marriage" as an example of another culture's views on the matter; note the "and within a country/society's legality" portion immediately afterwards.

Oh, I see now. The marriage thing kind of came out of left field for me.

I think if you made if so that there was a age of consent of intra-gender action, and possibly for a girl and an older man, there wouldn't be much change in child molestation. It's more statchatory rape, for those older men taking advantage of ignorant young girls. Like if your 20 and the girl is 15 even if she consents it's still rape.

Yeah, like what Roman Pilanski is getting arrested for. That means that my girlfriend could be arrested for rape. (She's 21, I'm 16.)

And the legal age here in the US is 18 mostly, but in states like Rhode Island, its 16.

I'm pretty sure that 16 is considered mature enough to make a consentual decision that can override your parents if they cared, so I don't think thats illegal. And if I'm wrong how are they gonna catch you?

I have to agree, even if you were joking, and I know people might hate on me, but I feel that if you're not done growing by then, you're never going to finish, but at that age you're pretty much guaranteed to be unclouded by all those growing years hormones that make people do such crazy shit.

For instance, you must be 18 in order to perform anal sex throughout Canada (my former roommate taught me that one after some research on his part). If one partner is 16 or 17, the other partner can be no older than 21 or 22 respectively. It is illegal for someone older than 16 to have sex with someone younger than 16 (stat rape) but two kids younger than 16 are a-ok to do it (I assume within reason; it's probably illegal for a 15 year old to be with a 10 year old but I haven't and probably won't research the specifics). And different provinces have different laws throughout Canada as well, further complicating sex in this country.

In that vein, why the fuck is the legal age for sex lower than the legal age for watching porn? I honestly don't know.

No I think the majority of porn just degrades women in the eyes of an adolescent male. If anything I believe it can fuel these 'episodes' as the lines between fantasy and reality can become easily blurred when seeing some thing like hardcore porn, domination and bondage etc. The age limit should stay where it is. I would even go so far to say that certain types of legal pornography should be banned as it really can warp some peoples heads. I think anyone who actually has any common sense will agree with me.

Softcore porn, like pin up girls and the like, is a much more appropriate 'outlet'.

Think about it, there is so much vulger behaviour around in public places than there was 50 years ago. I put this down the the avaliability of hardcore porn and the continued portrayal of sex in the media.

A while back someone started inserting images of an anime bear into pictures of girls that appear to be underage doing inadvertently 'sexy' things... it started back when all the "To Catch a Predator" stuff was popular. anal sex is now legal for anyone as long as they are of age, this got challenged and the law was tossed out

as for the age of people, there is a 2 year age gap allowed, ie a 16 and a 14 year old can have sex, and a 15 year old and a 13 year old can have sex. i do believe that 13 is the lower limit for this law tho

there is only the Criminal Code, other provinces don't have different laws, if they do they can't be more strict than the Criminal Code, ie by raising the age limits or putting more limits on what you are allowed to do via the Criminal Code

still one of the best stories i've ever had was i knew a guy that kept saying how much of a loser i was and was generally a dick towards me. i was older than him and he was 21 at the time. anyway one day he ended up getting arrested and sent to jail for .... having sex with a 13 year old girl, this was before they changed the law in Canada so 14 was legal. well time goes by and he gets probation and a restraining order against the girl. so some time passes and low and behold he gets arrested AGAIN for having sex with this girl, the funnier part about this was it was the day before her 14th birthday. even funnier he actually used the line "dude if you saw her you wouldn't say she's 13"

And I do find it a bit odd, you having sex with someone who is 16. And you're 22, non? 6 years... That's too big an age gap, personally.

at that age it can be, it's more or less a maturity thing, as you get older age becomes a number and not much else

I understand why they have age of consent laws, the legal system couldn't really deal with the claims of 'I thought she knew enough to consent' claims that would flourish without a set age. I just don't agree with it though, cause frankly a lot of adults walking around couldn't find their arse with both hands, let alone understand the consequences of sex... or signing legal documents. Also I don't agree with an 18 year old being labeled 'sex offender' for having a 16 year old girlfriend, simply because she wasn't 'old enough' to consent even though she was clearly old enough to be working a McJob and living away from home.

But.. the mess it would make civil and criminal court is undeniable.

Okay, thanks for clearing that up. Like I said, I didn't do the research so most of that was misinterpreted hearsay. I'm quite sure I heard someone say that there was a five-year legal gap for 16 and 17 year olds though. Is that one a recent change? And how recent was the anal change? It was only about a half-year ago that my ex-roommate did the research on that issue.

the five year gap is probly more of a good age range type thing, for maturity levels and such.

as for the anal thing the law got repealed in 1995, ie made it so that anal sex was ok if you were of age

well in Aus, or where i am in Australia, its 16 years of age, although most people abuse this right, guys and gal's at school will have sex with people for bragging my rights and im assuming because they need to do something to make them feel like a 'man' although with the idea of hundsight theyre more like dogs. nd when they have a falling out or someone needs a stabbing or whatever...they call for statutory rape-if theyre smart enough.
