The parade of the Orange Order in Catholic minority neighborhoods and harassing catholic school children [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Cross_dispute] doesn't make me feel more sympathetic to Ulster loyalist.

I don't think that really counts as past IRA. As far as IRA activity goes that's relatively recent. There's a huge difference between 1980s IRA groups and early twentieth-century groups.

Then after we had settled in, the stolen generation, where we kidnapped black kids so they would learn to live in a "normal" society, rather then an aboriginal one.

Don't forget, when we want to play nice, we take all the cultures across teh continent, mix them all up into a theme park version, and pretend that all Aboriginal people belonged to that.

Oh, and, IIRC, the only actual successful genocide committed by humans in history (last one known being the neanderthals, and that's technically pre-history, though any number of other unrecorded pre-historic genocides are possible). There are today no Tasmanian aborigines left. There are some people with some small amount of Tasmanian aborigine ancestry, but the culture are totally lost.

Well I disagree with you fully. I have no sympathy for the IRA of that era, they were terrorists, plain and simple.

And I completely disagree, Bobby Sands was not a terrorist.

Like I said to another person, the border is not far from no matter where you are and the republic is 5x bigger than the north. They can go south if they want to be free from the UK.

Even before Sands died the people voted to stay part of the UK so the IRA weren't fighting "for the people" or anything like that.

The only time I think you could fairly be on the side of the IRA is pre-partition when the UK ruled the whole island.

You'll forgive me if I have as much sympathy for Ulster Loyalist as I do for people who wanted to succeed from the Union and join the Confederacy.

As for the vote, I'm not surprised that a largely Protestant group of people voted in favor of a Protestant dominated government.
