I'll add one for Canada. Well, not really Canada, that thing was Quebec only to be honest, and probably very obscure for most people outside our province. It's know as Duplessis's orphans.
a little context, in the 40's and 50's, we had a prime minister named Duplessis. He was very corrupted, and very tied in with the catholic church autorities. Back then, especially in the 30's and early 40's, if a woman had a baby outside mariage, most of the time, that baby would be put in an orphanage, since it was a baby born in sin. and the orphanages were all directed by the catholic church. The church also had the control of the hospitals and mental institutions. And in the 50's they wanted to find more fundings.
Back then, the federal government was giving 75 cent of funding per orphan per day. and they gave 2,50$ per day per person in mental asylums. and while babies are relatively easy to be adopted, olders kids often stayed a long time in orphanages. So what they did, was to put several thousand kids in mental asylum, with fake mental health problems. it's estimated that between 50 000 and 100 000 kids were put in orphanages, with very strict rules by the nuns, and a few hundred cases of sexual abuse by priests, and when they were transfere in asylum, they were often tied to the beds, received no education, several were lobotomised, electroshocked, used as free workers, tortured and litterally lived with very troubled patients. a few thousand even just disapear, subjects of medical experiments, drug testings and various abuses.
all that stopped in the 60's
