I don't mean to spoil this for you (like this is a thread for people concerned with spoilers), but in the Legendary ending Master Chief's half of Forward Unto Dawn is shown drifting very close to a planet covered in light patterns reminiscent of Forerunner symbols
Maybe he is the marathon guy? (dun dun duh)

Finally beating Max Payne 2 on the hardest difficulty setting - it's nice to know that in some games, the more you work for it, the better the ending.

I think that Legend of Zelda Wind Waker's is best because he jams a sword into Ganon's skull.
And Gears of War with the train just looks sweet.

Call of Duty 4 :O

i don't mean the epilogue, i mean the slow motion captian price-sliding-over-the-pistol-and-shooting-the-bad-guys-in-crazy-slo-mo insanity

i like the epilogue too though, since i like near total randomness (see my username ffs), which is completely off-topic but is crazy fun running through there shooting everything up and saving the guy in a potato sack. (non-spoiler confusing detail ftw)

That's pretty much exactly what Halo 3's ending is. I absolutely love that quality to it- it's not a downer ending where he's just plain dead, but it's not some bland-o happy ending where he retires and sets up a book store, then dies of old age in 50 years. It's a very romantic ending (in the classical sense of the term), and I really hope they don't bring him back because I can't imagine a better final ending to his story.

I didn't really like the ending to Mass Effect to be honest, I only got the good one, but it didn't particularly stick out to me as a good ending
As a final ending to the story, it would suck. It was designed, however, as end of the first act of a trilogy. Truth be told, the very ending of Mass Effect is where the story really looks like it's getting started, which is why the prospect of EA screwing things up before we get the rest of the story makes me curl up and cry.

That would be cool (Marathon's the best old school shooter, screw Doom and it's 2-d gunplay, real shooters can look up) but canonically impossible. Marathon and Halo are completely seperate universes.

I feel like a dirty, dirty fanboy saying this, but I'd nominate Final Fantasy III/VI/Whatever for an honorable mention. I would love to see the ending of that game on current gen technology with a truly symphonic score, as it neatly closed out the game. Not the game, mind you; I've lost interest in the JRPG genre but will always have a soft spot for that one.

Bioshock's 'good' ending was touching, but perhaps a little bit of a sucker punch and certainly not that effective when the protagonist is a faceless stand-in for the player. Frankly, he has the personality of a broom.

Halo 3? I've found every aspect of the Halo series overrated, the ending no exception. No part of Halo was bad, and most were good, but it most certainly isn't the great FPS savior to which all other FPSes should be compared. Still, the finale of Halo 3 was good, though predictable.

I'm going to go on a limb and say Torment. The idea of the Nameless One owning up to his endless sins, accepting damnation, with Grace swearing to seek him through all the hells before her rushes off to his punishment? Yeah...

And I found Deus Ex (and DX: Invisible War) strangely compelling in their dystopian visions for each ending.

A brilliant point on an obvious parallel; I feel rather dumb for having missed it.

I liked the end of Dementium the Ward for the DS. Nt real popular as a game, but I thought the ending was a little bizzarre and I didn't fuly understand it. Which made me kind alike it sine it gave me that feeling of creepiness.

Serious points to the person that mentioned Terranigma. That gets my vote.

I have to say, to enjoy an ending you have to have some sort of investment in the characters involved, and so it's kind of hard to put a good ending (or good story, for that matter) on a game where the plot points consist of between-level cutscenes. Really, the best endings and plots are almost invariably found in RPGs, of which I have to give credit to Final Fantasies six and seven, Terranigma, Chrono Trigger, and I'll throw a bone to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night if you count the whole upside-down castle as an ending.

Okay, one exception to the RPG-only thing; the original Doom had a brilliant ending.

The current generation is lacking in moving storylines much like my keyboard is lacking mayonnaise. It might make it taste better but frankly it works better without cramming it in where is doesn't belong. Case in point is Devil May Cry 4, a game with possibly the most retarded storyline I have ever seen, but a complex and challenging combat system that might actually take me over a week to get the hang of. Also in the good-to-mediocre range are Dead Rising and Assassin's Creed, two more games that are playable with a lousy story. At this point I'm noticing a pattern.

Alright, ME is an exception I suppose, but it was so unoriginal in everything it did plot-wise that I hesitate to really send credit its way. Really what I like best about the game is that I can toss enemies around with my mind while shooting them.

Halo 3's ending cutscene redeemed it a little.

Bioshock's ending was dumb. Sorry if you think otherwise. The setting was creative but it died there.

Nintendo titles need not be mentioned, as much as I love Metroid and Zelda. Smash Bros stands as the pinnacle of "Games don't really NEED story".

Just finished Alone in the Dark a few hours ago and the ending(s) for that were a total cock slap!

I'd say my favorite ending on any game right now is the ending for Kane & Lynch... as arse clenchingly aggravating as that game is... the ending (where you go back for the guys) Is my favorite ending to any game thus far.

Legend of Zelda - A Link To The Past. Best graphics at the time. Best music. Made me cry the first time I saw it. Gives you time to reflect on all the accomplishments throughout the game. The meaning of life and so forth... actually the answer the game gives is a bit more encouraging than 43. ROFL.
It's 42...

Anyway LoZ:OoT comes into mind without consideration... So does LoZ:MM and MC...

more games should end with a song!
Tha's what I thought when I was young and innocent and never woke up screaming in the middle of the night.
I assume you've heard of Limbo of the Lost? That asset stealing adventure game made by 3 people who met at a bar?
I actually played it for kicks and saw this at the end:

Don't click if you value your sanity. Not exactly on-topic as the best ending ever, unelss it's from a "so bad it's good" Rocky Horror point of view.

Best game endings ever?
Hmm...

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic- This game was amazing and (for me) it was one of the first games I owned that really allowed for a different ending based on how you played.

Portal- (SPOILER-But, man, you should've already beaten the game by now.)
GLaDos is defiantly one of the funniest, evilest, and well crafted characters ever put into anything, let alone a video game. And after a whole game of listening to her hilarious one liners, fighting your way through rooms, doing her bidding, and destroying her for trying to burn you alive. After all of that, you get the pure gold that is 'Still Alive' during the credits. Portal is amazing, and The Cake is A Lie.

Mass Effect- Mostly for the same reasons as KOTOR, but with an even better story.

Fallout 2- I've just recently played this old gem, but this game was excellent, and so was the ending.

Bioshock- Well, not exactly the ending, but the twist at the "You're two thirds of the way through the game' spot was excellent. I really didn't expect anything like that coming. Would you kindly play this game?

Half Life 2: Episode 2- ( 'NOTHER SPOILER- Seriously, why aren't you playing these good games??)
Yes, this game was far too short. but the way it was ended was just great. Yes, it was very sad the Eli Vance died, but it left so many good unanswered questions that will have me buying Half Life 2: Episode 3 the moment it touches store shelves. How was the G-Man connected to Eli? What secrets does The Borealis hold? Where does Aperture Science fit in to all of this? Will I get to see GLaDos again? Will Alyx die (I really hope not)? How will they take back Earth from the Combine? Will I get to use the Aperture Science Hand-Held Portal Device again?
I cannot wait for HL2:E3.

And why are so many people saying that Final Fantasy games had the best endings ever? All those games are about is angsty teenagers with spikey hair, silly costumes and swords that are too big for anyone to actually use, let alone with ONE HAND.
With the exclusion of Final Fantasy VI for the SNES. Because that game was actually good and not over rated like FFVII. And FFXII, because it got rid of that stupid turn based system.
And before you go shouting "Ahh, you haven't played them before, you're just a hater, I'm foaming at the mouth in anger, I'm going to go write fan fiction of Cloud killing you for not liking him." Yes, I HAVE played all of the final fantasy games for consoles since FFVI. the only one that was okay was FFIX. They were boing, and there stories were boring and the fighting was the same...and thus, boring.
