The Dawn of war games, the only strategy games I've been able to get into. Starcraft is fun, but i like Dawn of War Better...and i've only played Red Alert 2, which is itself fun but i like Dawn of War better.

I have played A LOT of RTS's they are my favorite types of games and i have the say the best one i ever played was Battle for middle earth 2.. shame EA completely abandoned that game.

Doesn't seem to be many decent ones out anymore if I'm honest.

Red Alert 2 : Yuri's revenge. Purely because RA2 didn't feel finished. This was a much more streamlined package with great missions and funny acting. I smile everytime I play that game, and I still play it too.

And, if that doesnt count warcraft 3 tft

EDIT: Seriously? i'm the only person that loved kingdom under fire? The strategic possibilities in the open field battles always intrigued me

Very hard to choose, I'm a big fan of Age of Empires, Rise of Nations and Settlers games... of the Settlers games I think the 3rd or 4th was best. The 5th went all Age of Empires on me :(

But I'd have to give the crown to either Red Alert 1 + Expansions... or Red Alert 2.

If we were going for best RTS series, I think Command and Conquor would probably have to win hands down!

Of all time? Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings

Glorious game, absolutely glorious! While everyone else was playing Starcraft, I've always been an Ages fan, and Age of Empires 2 was undeniably the absolute pinnacle of the series!

Most recently I've been playing Company of Heroes as well as Dawn of War 2 quite a bit, and would certainly say they're among the best ever and certainly the best recent releases. But ever? Nah. Age of Empires 2 still holds that position for me.
absolutely correct. I remember playing the same aoe2 game for WEEKS in computer class at middle school. I LOVE AOE2 and would play it again if only it could accept higher video resolutions. No 1880 by 1060 for me :(

Warcraft 3 because its brilliant and Dune 2 solely because it added a lot of things that are now commonly used in RTS's

I'm just going to say the RTS I had most fun with, because I've hardly played any.

It is Cossacks, because's it's just so damn fun. God I miss that epic, epic game.

Battlezone 2
Hey, I guess Battlezone counts as well! Nice nostalgic game as well, sadly the level editor doesn't work.

Hmmmm thats such a damn hard question. But my vote goes to Age of Mythology. So many good times with that game.

Honorable mentions go to Red Alert 2, Age of Kings, Dawn of War, Age of Empires 3 (what? I enjoy it... i cant be the only one) and maybe Starcraft (it has not aged well).
I enjoy AoE3 also. As does two of my friends. The rest think we're crazy for enjoying it. Anyway, my vote would go to AoE3 or Command And Conquer Tiberium Wars.

Populous: The Beginning! :D Released back in 1998 and I still play it to this day! It was unfortunately outsold by CC1 but received very good reviews. My favorite RTS of all time. Simple yet unforgettably cinematic and just plain fantastic.

C&C Generals: Zero Hour
The Blizzard RTSs are to hard for me and the maps are a bit copy-paste-one-sided-boring.

Zero Hour had many teams (Generals) to choose from, casual humour and a "tech tree leaflet"(can't find a picture) that came with the manual and was awesome.

StarCraft, of course! It has three diverse and balanced races, the skill cap is practically non-existant, it is very spectator friendly, has an excellent community behind it and a ton of custom games to play.....what is not to like?

I seriously hope StarCraft II can achieve the same. While it's not there yet, it certainly has potential.
