Zack Fair to be more accurate, as he started the whole Buster Sword. Actually, the only reason they're cool is because the Buster Sword is REALLY awesome.
So Angeal then? Since he gave the sword to zack
Angeal never used the sword, only to parry an attack to protect Zack.

I don't know if gunblades count.

Frog from CT gets my vote.
Rapiers, Cutlasses & Broadswords there all types of Swords so a Gunblade should count even if there is no real word counterpart.

How can I be the first one to mention Kratos?
He's not exactly 'known' for using a sword though is he?
What do you call the blades of chaos? Attached by chain or not, they are still realistically swords, even down to the way he naturally holds them. And as the weapon lacks any other classifier, being too insane for any culture to have tried before....

Then theres the sword of Olympus, but I'll leave it there.
He also had the Blade of Artimus in the 1st game too. I thought the Blades of Chaos were more like over sized daggers or something.

Guts/Gutsu from Sword of the Berserk: Guts Rage the game had great programming if you were in a narrow hall you couldn't swing the sword around well cuase it would hit the wall or celling and you'd have to go hand-to-hand.

And the Blade of Artemis with its schzoo-schzoo noises and purple-red glow. Why they excluded it from God of War II eludes me... ah well, one can hope for GoW 3.
Because it wasn't as cool as the Hammer, the Spear or the Blade.
Yeah but it went schzoo-schzoo! Nothing beats funny noises and cutting people in half by spinning around in circles.

Whoever the guy was from Castlevania who wielded 5 swords
You mean that Yoachim Armster guy?

My personal vote goes to Gilgamesh, that 8-armed warrior guy from Final Fantasy V. Only one of his weapons is a sword, so if you're gonna pick nits about that, take the FFXII one. I wonder where two of his arms went, there...

The blade of Olympus could do both of those, and it fired Lasers.
Lasers you say? I have been beaten. Our next duel shall include rapiers, it will.

"Known" The shitty sub weapon does not count. As for the blades, myeh, compared to his character model they always looked like knives.

Yoshimitsu.

End of Thread.

If we branch out to non-videogames, I vote for Samurai Jack, with a close second going to The Scotsman.

That thing is a sword? It looks more like a really long trouble light like you see in auto shops. I'd say the hero of the Ninja Five-O game. That was a really cool ninja game. It's still one of my favorites even after playing all the Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi etc. games.

Known for wielding a sword? Well, I guess I'll vote for Nariko then. You know, from "Heavenly Sword":)

However, if we're allowed to choose sword-wielders not originating in, but having appeared in videogames (like the Deadpool example above), my vote goes to Goemon Ishikawa XIII from the Lupin the 3rd franchise (which includes several games across different systems). He's at least seven kinds of awesome when it comes to swordplay.

Good to see two very worthwhile and not particularly well known mentions on the first page.

Cless and Issac of course.

I'd have to give it to Cloud Strife myself. He's a classic.

I'm reluctant to go into characters that were created for another form of media, because then I'd have to start thinking in terms of guys like Conan and Drizzt or whomever. Drizzt having been in a few games, and well... Conan has been around in video games in one form or another for ages.

Thinking of things that way you'd kind of have to say Conan because let's be honest: he's the prototype on which pretty much all modern sword-wielding heroes sprung from (even if there are some that are technically older). NOBODY beats Conan. :p
