did you read the article?

It's about who "DEFINED THE DECADE," not "THE BEST CHARACTERS"

I love Metal Gear Solid 3 more than almost any other game, but even I agree with how they handled it.

I'm pretty damn sure Master Chief defines first person shooters, mediocre or not. They also gave excellent explanations for the characters, in my opinion. GI has terrible reviews but amazing articles sometimes.

Whilst I don't like Halo at all you can't deny that pretty much every gamer (and a lot of non-gamers) can tell you who Master Chief is whilst plenty of people won't have a clue who The Boss is.

The Boss is a much better written character, yes, but that doesn't make her a defining character unfortunately.

If I alone had made this list, Boss would be number 1... But its about the most *iconic* characters in the last decade and lets face it, even though MGS 3 deserves to be considered as iconic, fps has ruled this last decade so is it really a suprise?

It's a gaming magazine. Their opinions are usually... not so great.

I have been waiting for several months to find a post that would been totally crushed by this picture.

Wow, is the world revolving around me or something today? x-x (just finished a MGS3 playthrough last night after his last one 2 years ago)

But ya..while I have to agree, that the Boss is one of the most well developed and emotional driven characters in a video game ever, she really doesn't have much bearing as a decade defining character. Not many people have played Metal Gear Solid games, and even fewer then that have played MGS3 (mostly because they stopped at 2 because of the Raiden incident).

That and apparently some people have problems with the MGS story, which really isn't that hard once you think about it, its actually a pretty well strung together story, with each part having some meaning for later in the game, or later in the storyline.

But yes, back on topic, The Boss is a tragic and well defined character, but this is about iconic characters of the decade, which I think Solid Snake would probably be a better contestant for.

note: I also included a picture of her with my comment because apparently people don't know who she is T_T (seriously people, go pick up MGS3: Snake Eater....now!)
I would not put Solid Snake on there. He always felt kind of bland to me compared to the other characters.

His father, Big Boss, has to go down in my opinion as the most tragic character of almost all time.

They probably incorporated the novels, because there is no way Master Chief would be number four on the list if they didn't.
And to everyone else basing their opinion on the books, isn't it cheating to count the 'expanded universe' into your decision? And by the way, the books only added that he was plucked from an idylic life and thrust into his role unwillingly to make a poor attempt of making him deep

I would hazard to say no MGS characters should be on the list. The only defining ones are Snake, Otacon and maybe Ocelot. They're not 2000s characters so they don't fit. Characters that invoke emotion are good, MGS characters usually invoke indifference or boredom and I don't think those count as emotions.

They'd count as emotional states, and arguably, not the one the game designers were hoping to invoke in their audience.

OT I care not for these lists, they can be created by anyone and with careful questioning obtain the pollster's desired result.

And while I must agree that Halo has made a huge impact, I would point out that meteorites make huge impacts when they strike a planet; impact is one thing, positive fallout from that impact is quite another.

OK, I'm not going to go back on my thoughts, but I will consent that maybe it is meerly a list and not a countdown. But here's my reasonings against that:

1) Why number it?
2) Why have your instantly recognizable characters (GLaDOS, Nathan Drake, Master Chief) first and your less recognizable characters (KOS-MOS, Wanderer, Raz) last?
3) Why dedicate more space to the earlier ones than the later ones?

This all taints the opinions of those reading to make it look more ordered than it being a hodgepodge would want it to look

Am I the only one who was surprised that Master Chief didn't take second place? I mean, John Marston? Really? Why don't I see Pyramid Head or the Nurses on the list? What about the Oblivion guards? Memes HAVE to count for something here.

Um, barebones backstory? Try reading some books. They take it from "barebones" to "reasonably fleshy".
Yes, because people are expected to read books that are spun off a game, to get the personality.

Perhaps we can have games with no story, and then make books that have the games story in it. -.-''
Well, it could get frat boys to read. :p
I imagine they'd just get wasted and play the game while going, "duuuuude, I don't know what's goin' on, but this is wiiicked~"
Soooo...it wouldn't change anything and they'd go on their merry way not caring about the story at all?

To drunk people? Doubtful.
