Any of you reading for a degree at University will have no doubt noticed the large number of "University Meme Pages" sprouting up all over facebook this past week. Sure many of the memes are hilarious but the exposure of meme culture to uncultured people is causing a horrific rise in the number of misused memes as well as overuse of old ones. It is killing memes.

This is the Memepocalypse and yesterday it seemed the first American Meme Pages began to appear (I've studied in both Countries and was watching the development.) It seems the British epidemic is doomed to go global.

For discussion value - what do you think of this? Is it sad / funny / bullshit / abusive to memes / or brilliant? For bonus points post a pic of your favourite Uni Meme.

I've noticed the uni trend too over the last week, although meme-culture has slowly been seeping into general Internet culture for quite a long time I reckon, I realised this late last year when one of my non-video game playing brothers came out with an "arrow to the knee" joke.

I'm not particularly pleased by it considering they seem to be using them wrong most of the time anyway. Like this example

Memes suck anyway, used by kids on crappy forums like /b/

let them rot I say.
Firstly this.

Secondly, it's very nice for everyone to know that redditors are currently feeling as annoyed as channers are with rage comics.

Thirdly, I find it quite ironic that the only reason this has happened was because a signle post on reddit gave it attention, thus making the original pages about 1000 times worse, and spawning several others.

Its absolutely terrible, isnt it? These memes were overused at best when only 4chan were aware of them, even worse when Reddit joined in, and now we have 9gag which is aimed at guys and gals who only use the internet for Facebook. Horrifying. I thought I had seen enough of Me Gusta to last me a lifetime and now I cant log onto Facebook without seeing 5 bad Me Gusta comics.

And you know the worst thing? 9gag taking these age old pictures, posted on 4chan about 4 years ago, and PUTTING THEIR FUCKING WATERMARK ON THEM. How scummy can you be.
And yet they still have the nerve to constantly whine about reposts.

There is a God; I thought I was alone in being really, really, really annoyed at the abuse of memes on Facebook recently.

The University memes are like inside jokes. Exclusive. Why bother spreading them about the place? No one gives a toss unless you happen to share the same University, and then it's a "Hmph that was quite amusing" *Crushed under piles of shitty memes*

There doesn't seem to be a page for my university (Leeds). Thank goodness for that!

EDIT: Oh no wait I spoke too soon, yes there is o_O

Just to clarify, the "uncultured people" killing memes with overuse are Americans, right?

I agree, they've become so rampant that they don't even serve their original purpose anymore; taking familiar situations and making them hilarious. Half the memes I've encountered lately describe far fetched scenarios and are overly wordy. It's said that the best jokes are ones that don't need to be explained, and that's becoming all too true in the meme world.

Nah, hats not the inference I was making, by uncultured I was referring to those who have only just been exposed to meme culture and thus 1) Think it's the most hilarious and novel thing ever and 2)Have no idea how do use memes possibly. It's rampant in both countries from what I've been seeing :p

Although I must admit I find a lot of them quite funny :p

Gotcha, I saw a correlation there when you first mentioned meme culture and uncultured people, then British University culture translating to American. Not that I cared if you were making a stab at America anyway, I only assumed there was a link there.

Back on topic, I can't think of the one I saw in the last few days that was pretty good. That's frustrating, I'll have to reply again if I manage to find it.

This exact thing happened to me. Well it wasn't my non-video game playing brother, it was a friend. :p Nonetheless I was in absolute shock and horror. Especially because I thought that at least in the real world I would be free from that horrible terrible deity awful meme. I nearly threatened to end the friendship right then and there, but took it back by saying I was just joking.

Arrow to the Knee jokes suck. ._.

I think everyone who has a problem with memes becoming popular doesn't realise that the type of people who love these jokes doesn't change... it's you who has changed, your sense of humour, your world view. If you met yourself when you first thought memes were the most hilarious thing ever, you'd see some annoying little kid who looked at the pre-cursors to 9Gag and MemeBase on a daily basis.

Quit complaining about the facts of life. </anti-hipster rant>

Both the Leeds Uni and Leeds Met got shut down because of the unjustified hatred between the two. At least I can justify why I hate the met, damn met.

It's a shame, some were actually pretty funny.
