I'm sciencier.

All I want to know is - Can I light a cigarette with it? That, for me, would come close to justifying the cost. Around tax return time.

So, there's the potential that the "setting skin on fire instantly" I've seen around may be oberblown, but here's a sobering disclaimer direct from the manufacturer--

Direct or indirect skin exposure to blue laser light is also harmful. The MPE (Maximum Permissible Exposure) for skin for a 3mm beam of this wavelength is approximately 200mW/CM^2. This is laser can easily generate a power density (irradiance) of about 15 Watts/CM^2. Therefore, this laser's beam exceeds the skin exposure MPE by ( 15 / 0.2 ) = 75 times. At this level of irradiance, skin exposure to the intense blue laser light can possibly cause cancer. Do not allow bare skin to be exposed, including your face when wearing safety goggles, to light diffusely reflected from any surface closer than several inches. This laser is a thousand times stronger than sunlight on skin and any type of exposure should be avoided whether it be from the collimated beam or close exposure to its bright diffused reflections.

Blue light hazard-- can cause BLINDNESS and not just color perception issues. The power of this laser is no joke, at 1W the Spyder III Pro Arctic is a Class 4 Laser. Do not allow unprotected eye exposure to diffusely scattered light from the beam terminating on a wall, the floor or other flat surface from this laser closer than 3 feet. Accidental eye exposure will definitely result in instant retina tissue damage even within just milliseconds of exposure. Direct eye contact with the beam or reflected will cause instant permanent damage and blindness. Sometimes blindness may take a day or longer for the onset. Unlike instant injury from a bright flash of a red or green laser, this effect is cumulative over 24 hours. It is also possible that such an exposure could cause retinal degeneration and even loss of vision later in life.

This is a very serious issue and would like to reiterate that extreme care, proper safety gear and the necessary safety precautions be followed when using the Spyder III Pro Arctic, it is not a toy, it is a high power Class 4 1W laser. In addition, this laser must NEVER be used to play with your pets. At close range, this Class 4 beam will cause immediate and irreversable retinal damage. Close proximity to the beam's diffused reflection off floors and walls could potentially cause injury and blindness. In general, DO NOT aim this laser on yourself, on your skin, on animals, on others or target moving vehicles and airplanes.

The Spyder III Pro Arctic blue laser should only be handheld by individuals who have appropriate laser safety training and product familiarity in using Class 4 lasers. For more information and guidance please refer to ANSI Standard Z136.1 from the American National Standards Institute on the safe use of lasers.
From what I gather, even flashing someone in the eye with this thing for less than a second could ruin them for life. Even the diffuse light from it is powerful enough to cause serious eye damage.

That's some power, right there.

If it can cut various materials it'd be damn handy for hobbyist crafting. The thought of idiots running around with a tool that can permanently blind someone in a split second is not damn handy.

This is a reminder to all the people who are gonna say the forums ninja'd this.

THE MODS DONT GIVE A FUCK

That is all.
It's not so much that, but that people simply need to understand that forum readership is a subsection of our traffic. The percent of people that post on the forums and read the news is pretty high as they are actively participating in the site, but a lot of people come her for any number of reasons and don't post in the forums. They will however read our news.
They will listen, we HAVE the power.

On Topic: I'll give it a few weeks before we hear of a Plane crash or some concert going horrifically wrong.

While that's true, but my point is simply that if we are discussing keeping dangerous items out of willing hands. There are far cheaper, easier and if pressed less legal ways of acquiring far more deadly instruments than this laser. It would be far easier to hurt someone with your average household kitchen knife than this.
If hurt is your intent, then yes, a kitchen knife would be better suited for your murder attempt, however, if you are larking around with your little brother shining the light on him, and three weeks later he gets cancer...

Or if you "for a laugh" want to see if your laser pointer can be seen on a plane (forgetting how limitted eyesight is) and you hit a reflection onto the windscreen, or something else important.

The incidental tragedies that are far more preventable then the killing rampages are the first priority.

That said, I totally want one... I just don't know if I can justify not eating for two weeks to have enough money to buy one.

Ahh, I can already see the YouTube videos of dumb fucks frying their own or their friends' eyes.

It is kind of scary that we may see morons with these things pulling really dangerous "pranks". Still, about $200 is still kind of expensive... right? Hopefully too much for any artards that would get a laugh out of blinding people.

i found a laser on youtube with the same output/wavelength as this thing

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__5CpKlr4-4&feature=related

if it can cut through a wooden match, it could do some damage to your skin...

I wouldn't really call $200 affordable when that's the kind of price tag that can make a portable gaming system hard to buy. Granted it's probably a lot cheaper than most people would guess you'd have to spend on that kinda thing, but when I'm not buying a DSi because it doesn't sound like a worthwhile investment, I'm definitely not going to drop cash on a bigger price tag for something that would see less use.

To say this is as dangerous as a knife is missing the point. Some dickweed could decide to go for a drive with some friends and shine that thing at pedestrians for 'lulz'. A quick flick of the wrist and that bright blue beam will draw eyes and suddenly a lot of people lose one of their 5 senses, permanently. You can't visually cripple a room full of people with a common household knife, but walk into any crowded classroom or Wal Mart, flash that thing at a wall a few times, and the reflection alone will blind anyone that happens to see it.

...and before I get a "hurr durr don't look then!!!" reply, it's scientifically proven that humans, indeed many mammals, will look at an abruptly shown light source reflexively. There are medical tests based on this very principal. You will not know what you are seeing at first and will instinctively look before you can help yourself.

well I may have exaggerated slightly with the willing to die thing, but I am willing to risk an extra 0.000005% of being in a plane crash if it means i can have my personal freedoms.
Why don't all of you people just go live in padded cells? SHIT HAPPENS! lasers won't/don't blind people, people do. And besides, theres a lot of different handheld lasers that will have the same effect on retinas, and you don't see a lot of this being an issue. even if you have someone stupid enough to try and get a plane, you must remember this is still an incredibly difficult thing to do, damn near impossible! and you would basically have to be at an airport (which are swarming with security) to even have a shot.

is it so bad that i want a laser for purely safe use? And for those of you saying about cancer, of coarse they warn against cancer, they don't want to get sued. its like the massive manual that comes with gameboys telling you to watch out for seizers and whatnot. I AM NOT saying that people should point this thing anywhere near another living creature, and definatly not on the skin. but you must admit just firing this thing into saaaay, a stormcloud would look totaly sick!
asshole will always find a way to be what they are, and those that initialy want these for malicious purposes will get them illegially anyway.
it's pointless trying to restrict something you can make from Blu-ray players, the only people your hurting by banning things are the people who want them for legitimate purposes.

Don't worry guys. Clearly this is just a clever ploy to get morons everywhere to blind themselves & their moron friends. This would have the effect of severely limiting how much damage they can cause for the rest of their lives... which could be less than a day if they go to sleep with this thing left on & pointed at the curtains.

OT: Wow, that really needs to be band, and the businesses shut down. I know the government going around shutting things down is very bad for PR, but you have a company selling a weapon touting as being the most deadly of it's kind ever, without any restrictions, to anyone, anywhere (in the U.K.), for a rather small price. I'm pretty sure you can't even buy a gun for two hundred seventy dollars (rough estimate), which at least then it's registered and each gun can be traced, at least in one way or another.
$270 is enough to buy several guns if you are not concerned about quality.
True, I'm pretty sure a one shot only survival rifle is like 30 bucks at a camping store.

Edit: It can only hold one bullet inside it at a time, but it can be used more than once.

What this guy said.
It's still nowhere near being a weapon, let alone a light sabre.

What exactly is the purpose of such a tool?
