NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 - 1GB - EVGA Superclocked - GDDR5. It will literally run any game you need it to. There's honestly no reason to go any higher than it and it's only $109.

I couldn't, in good conscience, buy a nVidia card, my system uses an AMD CPU.

Add that OP, you said that your system is running an AMD CPU, use an ATI card, they work better together, just as Intel CPUs and nVidia cards do, you'll get more bang for your buck.
Whiiiiich is complete rubbish. I'm running a nV450GTS with a Phenom II X4, works fine, pushes hard. Got some facts to back that statement up or are you just sprouting it from your imagination?
I'm running an nVidia card with my Phenom II X4 as well. Sorry, quotee of this quotee, but I'm going to call rubbish as well.

That one's mine. Got it about a month ago, maybe 2. Roughly the same price, maybe 10 bucks more at the time. Maybe not.

My system is that card, 12 gig Ram, An I7-965 3.2 gig.. 1 tb hardrive and a blueray DVD. (read only BR, but wrights DvD/CD)

I'm pretty much able to max nearly everything out at 1920/1200 rez. I tinker a bit with my AA and AR and other graphics settings per game, to acheave 50-60 fps per, with V sync as i HATE screen tearing. With work, i can acheave my FPS and still normally have a pretty tricked out game. My FPS is more importent then little things like crasy detail in the shadows or reflections. I mean, i turn them up to the max when i can and maintain my FPS, but, when i need to make some cuts, they are the first to go. heh.

I'll just quote it.
"AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 245 Processor 2.90GHz"

I'm assuming from the two's that it is a dual.
That's a very weak CPU for a recently bought PC.
What graphics card do you have in there?

I'd suggest u buy a graphics card for less than $100. Anything more expensive is going to be pointless since it's going to be constrained by your CPU.
Think: HD 5670 (around $75)

I would expect around £5. It's an integrated intel mobile chipset, made for netbooks, so I can't imagine they put much money into it. It's an atrocious piece of crap, but the real bottleneck is the 1.3Ghz processor. Man, I did not think about this purchase.

240 usd, it's a 560 ti. although I feel that this card's potential is only unleashed in a handful of games. In most cases a 100 usd card should get the job done. Infact, people should take a serious look at the new AMD apus.

You guys, making my GPU look really bad... I have an Nvidia Geforce GT 220, worth about £50. Considering the only thing I've played in the last couple of months on my PC is Deus Ex, I don't think I'll need an updated graphics card. I generally don't use my PC for gaming.

I have a GeForece 8600.

I don't remember how much it cost, but I know it's more than I would've liked.

I agree with the above two rubbish callers. I've got the opposite, I'm running a Radeon HD 5770 with an i5-760 and it's awesome.

$209 when I got it. Cheaper now.
I use the exact same thing. Was only about $140 on Newegg(.ca), and i love it. Works like a dream, and the software (MSI Afterburner, a Overclocker) is amazing. It also has a very low temperature, it never went over 60 degrees Celsius, and runs all my games on max.

Mine was about $170 new, but that was a year ago.

GPU's are a place that you can skimp when building a new computer. A decent one will play pretty much any game you could ever want, and will come down in price faster then anything else. If your paying a lot, your pretty much just shooting for the luxury.

Also, NVidia seems to have more name recognition. That's why it seems so prevalent. But though 'm sure this and that person will argue the minutia of one versus another on every conceivable level, they are largely comparable. Just do a little, tiny bit of research to see what radeon is comparable to a Geforce of a given price. Even a game that talks about running best on one will still run fine on another, largely. Personally, I use a Geforce. But that's just a vestige of way back in the day when Radeons support was unbelievably shitty (In my experience, of course).

AMD - AMD made it
Athlon - Athlon is the model, kinda an ordinary middle of the road class
II - It's the second version of the Athlon
X2 - Two cores
245 - The model number, typically bigger = better within a single range but not always
2.90gHz = Each core is clocked at up to 2.9gHz.

My 1 GB GTX460 Golden Sample cost me about 160$ -30$ for trading in my previous, damaged card. Not complaining. Should last me till i can spare some money for SLI setup.

Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 512mb for $140 dollars a few years ago (when L4D1 just came out). Still runs most things on max settings just fine, but my CPU is really showing its age. I wouldn't recommend the card now because it is fairly old, but for the price back then and how it's managed to work and perform so well even now, I'm definitely happy I got it.

Thats a very old and by today's standards not very powerful processor... I hope you're buying this thing dirt cheap second hand or you're being ripped off. Also it may not be up to running a new graphics card at its full potential.. you'd want to look into that before splashing out on a mid range+ graphic card.

just FYI

Edit: My bad... Looks like they've made a new version of the X2, for a long time it was just the X3's and X4's so I assumed this thing was from the previous generation... turns out I was wrong. You should be fine with it.

Nvidia 7600GS about £100 in 2006. Plays SC2 on low everything at 50-60 FPS.

I have a dual core 2.13 GHz processor. (Intel Conroe)

As for a GPU, I am really set down with a horrible one.
I looked at games on steam and they generally want Nvidia. However, these cost quite a bit of money and I am wondering, how much did your GPU's cost?

(I would ask for links to the websites where they were purchased, but that might be considered advertising)

TL;DR How much did your GPU cost?
Before buying a new GPU, make sure that your PSU can handle it. A lot of pre-built computers come with a PSU that barely meets or is even under the required amount for the parts, which means that you can't add anything without getting a new one.

As for my recommendation, the <a href=http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131441>Radeon HD 6570 is what came with my computer. It (along with an AMD Phenom II x6 2.8GHZ and 8gb Ram, though those are hardly necessary) runs everything I throw at it at either max or a mix of medium and high settings. It's not high-end, but it's pretty great nevertheless.

Oh man, I bought mine many years ago. I have no idea about what the current cost is, but I doubt it's any more than 150 dollars.
