What is the moral of the Dark Knight?

Note: That's it. What do you think it is. No more then 2000 words. Offer opinions. We might discuss them. You will enjoy yourself. Is that enough structure for you?

That in the end dressing up as a bat and fighting crime isn't socially acceptable.

The pencil is a lie... ?

I don't know, I don't think there was a moral. It was Batman, that's really enough for a good movie I think.

Do purple suits beget crazy or does crazy beget purple suits? I think that is the question we should be asking ourselves.

Actually it apparently is. Batman's being chased at the end because he took the blame for Dent's killings.

I think it shows that the general public does have a conscience, even the convicts.
Heh. Ya. Remember that time the public demanded Batman's head? And remember that time I said the movie wanted to have its cynicism both ways? No wait, I'm doing that now.

I'm going to go with entertainment for entertainment's sake. Looking for art out of everything isn't a requirement, and shouldn't be seen as such. Sometimes, let's enjoy fun for fun's sake.

That Christian Bale still hasn't learned how to move his upper-lip when he speaks.
Whoa. He really doesn't...I was wondering what he was lacking as an actor. Upper lip movement. I guess Michael Caine does the work for the both of them. Although if we get a Bill Nighy as Alfred then we'll really have some teamwork going.

So what was all that stuff about being a hero no more? Making the great sacrifice? Giving up one's morality to fight the bad guy?
Was it all just obfuscation so we could enjoy watching a well-acted cliche?

ever seen "Batman and Robin" before? The one made in the 90s by Joel Shumacher? That'll change your opinion right quickly... Apart from that, though, you are almost entirely correct.

You know, I really liked the way that bit of the movie played out- it did the whole conscience thing quite tastefully, without ever being 'cheesy'....... That Nolan guy knows what he's doing, as well as how to pick good actors for small parts

Mmm...Neoconservatism.
You know, that's about what I too from it. Of course it's not quite as mushy an interpretation as the "but the prisoners were good people!" side of things...

Ah, I've got one- very original, mind you: "Some men just want to see the world burn."

That seems like a good sum-uppance of at least part of the film, right?

Its gianormous conflict between raw instrinct and the resilience of order?
A battle between freedom without rules, and freedom within the confines of ethics?
The debate between the savage tribesmen and the refined Citizen within everyone?

Dark Knight was good because it never gave much to the debates, yes I argue they were present in the film and as Marc Fennell said in his podcast, everything is a debate between two sides, but it doesn't control the action, nor does the action determine the debate.
