When it comes to that certain subject, person, historic event, setting or visual style, people always tend to think of a particular movie that sums it up the best. Well I'd like to hear what you think is a movie that is the absolute pinnacle of representing a certain...'thing.' Obviously the fewer contenders you get for your 'X', the more solid is your claim that the movie really is the 'definitive' one.

That makes nearly no sense, so I'll just jump to examples:

I nominate 'Twister' as the definitive movie about Tornadoes. I also see Backdraft as the definitive firefighting movie, and Tora Tora Tora as the definitive movie about the attack on Pearl Harbor.

See what I mean? What say you all? Agree? Disagree? Have your own ideas?

I nominate back to the future as the definitive Scott film, in all his greatness.

I also nominate Team America for the definitive What is the point! film.

And Saving Private Ryan as the definitive WW2 film.

Interesting- I'll have to check out The Wind That Shakes the Barley. I also agree 100% with Das Boot- I heard somewhere that modern Submariners laugh themselves silly at most sub movies, but Das Boot is a very different breed.

I'd agree with Deliverance, though I thought you were going down a different road there... well played.

Memento- definitive movie about short-term memory loss, and Groundhog day is the definitive film about... um... the groundhog day effect?

I'd like to nominate This Is Spinal Tap! as the definitive parody of '80s hair metal... y'know, assuming that there are any others...

I also nominate Inglourious Basterds as the best movie that changes history.

I nominate the original Star Wars trilogy as the definitive movies for the artistic medium of film.

But that will no doubt be challenged by other movies, so on to the slightly less debatable ones.

I nominate Casablanca as the definitive black and white movie.

I nominate Monty Python and the Holy Grail as the definitive nonsensical comedy.

I nominate Alien and Aliens as the definitive sci-fi horror movies.

I nominate Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as the definitive non-linear time movie.

Argh, there are too many good animated movies out there to choose from...

Ah, I see what you did there.

I nominate The Rocky Horror Picture Show as the definitive transvestite film, Animal House as the definitive college frat house film, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit to be the definitive live action/animated hybrid film.

I nominate Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb as the definitive black comedy.

I nominate Apocalypse Now as the definitive war movie. "Definitive war movie" is a loaded one, but I think when the last human on Earth goes to watch a war flick, he'll pick Coppola's film.

Ehhh, I dunno man. I'm gonna have to go with Goodfellas on that one. Deffinitely an honorable mention though.
