I find most of these comics funny.
I don't read any of the words though, I just look at the faces.

Hilarious every time, no matter the situation.

My webcomic reading time is valuable. I am not about to waste it on a barely-funny-enough-for-a-wry-smile gaming comic written by someone who can only be described as a ****.

Well, I've been reading CAD for a bit now, and admire the fact that Tim is trying something a bit different.
He's not doing anything "different", he's doing the exact same descent into Drama! and Serious Plots! that every initially humourous webcomic (and some print comics) do over time. Cerebus Syndrome [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/CerebusSyndrome].
Well, I guess that's just a natural pattern, in order to explore their own skills. Would you rather that he continued to just make mindless parodies of video games until he completely ran out of ideas? Then it would end up as horrible and unfunny as 8 Bit Theatre.
What's wrong with 8 bit theatre?

I'm too buisy reading Questionable content, XKCD, and the occasional Bleedman comic. I could never get into neither Ctrl+alt+Del nor Penny Arcade.

Back to the point, ever heard of a thing called irony? I think it may apply to this webcomic.

I don't get it. It wasn't particularly painful, but was it supposed to be entertaining? I usually don't read these things anyway, so I don't really know what I'm talking about.

CAD was the first webcomic I ever read, and the early issues (or whatever you want to call em) weren't bad, mainly because CAD didn't take itself too serious at the time. As the years passed, Buckley grew more ambitious with the storyline and his storytelling, pretty much climaxing in the miscarriage storyline. To me it feels like he's lost touch with his audience, but the new sillies he's added retain some of what made the old comics good, so maybe there's still hope. I basicly only read penny arcade at the moment, since they've managed to maintain a pretty high standard. VG Cats is great too, and is in my oppinion the funniest, but since it only gets updated once every two weeks, it's not really a conteder for "greatest webcomic".

Well, it started off alright, with actual jokes and stuff, poking fun at the game and characters in general. Now, they'll decide to have some form of actual advancement in the pliot, and the next 20 strips will all be the following dialogue:

Fighter: I like swords/I'm stupid.
Black Mage: I hate you, and will try to murder you, and this puppy.
Red Mage: I have a plan! I'm a genius!
BM: I hate you, and will murder you, along with this other puppy.
White Mage: Why can't we all just get along?
BM: Wow, you're hot, and I will make obvious, crude passes at you.
WM: Leave me alone.
Rogue: Whilst you've been talking, I have stolen everything you own. Even the lint in your pockets.
BM: I hate you too.

Repeat until comatose.

Maybe you guys are not the targeted audience?

I can imagine a 12 year old girl might enjoy this.

*reads comic*
*shakes head*
*goes back to waiting patiently for the new VGcats*
It's worth the wait, and infinitely better than this garbage.

So how long have you been a fan of Penny Arcade? That strip is not representative of their usual content.

i don't know why there's such hate on Tim and his webcomic. Sure, he's deviating from the whole videogame theme, but sometimes you have to shake up established routine in order to stop yourself from producing the same old stuff. I mean, look at VGcats. Their comics do nothing but mindless parodies, and when was the last time they updated according to their schedule?
We don't mind deviation if its funny. No one with an IQ bigger then their shoe size has ever laughed at Buckley's work. He's simply not funny and he never will be.
Ah so I guess I must have a shoe size of 126 since I laughed at it and go to WPI.

Or you have bad arguements. In fact, yes...you have bad arguements. Let me go ask my other friends in college what they think

*one focus group later*

they also say you have bad arguments

God forbid a comic have a storyline. This is why media is going to suffer a creative stagnation because culture is populated by dittoheaded morons who are displeased by anything not SAFE and FAMILIAR.

Am I saying this is great? No. I'm saying it's decent. It's certainly not terrible. And I'm not being a hypocrite because Gabe totally didn't put a marriage proposal into a comic rather than make a gaming joke that day

OH WAIT.

But of course since that's real I guess that's just romantic and fine. Oh who am I kidding. It's really stupid and asinine to compare CAD and Penny Arcade. CAD has been for the longest time driven by plots, Penny Arcade likes to avoid "The Dreaded Continuity"

Of course I expect I'll be labelled as some sort of Buckley fanboy and that'll be good for a few jokes, maybe if you get some laughs you should make a comic as well.

My point is this. There is no formula all comics even tertiarily about video games have to follow. None. AT ALL. If you don't like it, fine. I don't really give a shit because you aren't me and you can't influence my opinions. So go back to wasting time hating on things for silly reasons rather than actually doing something productive with your time.

There are no good webcomics. The only good comics on the web are web editions of print comics.

The other guy who criticized Penny Arcade almost got it right. Yes; PA makes obscure references, but they're a niche product, so it's reasonable for them to do so.

The real problem is that they don't add anything to their references. In the Mirror's Edge strip, they're referring to people who complain about the motion sickness caused by the game, but continue to play it. But that's all they're doing. There's some exaggeration for comedic effect, but it's uninspired. The strip comes off as a quotation of a discussion board.

A talented comic artist would have incorporated the aspect of the game that is making everyone so nauseous, i.e. the vertigo induced by first-person virtual parkour. Why not a depiction of that hot chick running around, then spotting her reflection in a skyscraper's window, at which point we see she's holding a barf bag? Something like that.

The worst failing of Penny Arcade is that it makes little to no use of its advantages as a visual medium. There's no reason it needs to be a comic, rather than a text blog.
