It's a good thing there are so many enlightened Web Comic experts around to tell me that Penny Arcade is crap-- I've been checking that site every day for like four years and was never aware.

Hooray for web comics set in Jamaica! *Dances in celebration for this small amount of recognition of his home country*

Not that I read CTRL+ALT+DEL, nor do I like it, nor do I usually acknowledge it's existence. But anyway, on topic:

What's wrong with a relationship strip? XKCD and Penny Arcade do them once in a while.

There are no good webcomics. The only good comics on the web are web editions of print comics.

The other guy who criticized Penny Arcade almost got it right. Yes; PA makes obscure references, but they're a niche product, so it's reasonable for them to do so.

The real problem is that they don't add anything to their references. In the Mirror's Edge strip, they're referring to people who complain about the motion sickness caused by the game, but continue to play it. But that's all they're doing. There's some exaggeration for comedic effect, but it's uninspired. The strip comes off as a quotation of a discussion board.

A talented comic artist would have incorporated the aspect of the game that is making everyone so nauseous, i.e. the vertigo induced by first-person virtual parkour. Why not a depiction of that hot chick running around, then spotting her reflection in a skyscraper's window, at which point we see she's holding a barf bag? Something like that.

The worst failing of Penny Arcade is that it makes little to no use of its advantages as a visual medium. There's no reason it needs to be a comic, rather than a text blog.
Thanks for an intelligent reply :)
As for myself these days I cant seem to like or find anything interesting on either comics (might be because I play less games, might be because the comics have gotten worse) so it made me wonder why so many praised Penny Arcade on this thread.

To be fair to Tim, if he'd stuck purely with gaming jokes, he'd have run out by now.
Order of the Stick has 600+ issues...Perhaps 1 or 2 have been duds.

And I cheered when Haley and Elan got together. In reality.

i have a question:
why do we care so much about this? Like i said, it's an absolutely nothing webcomic. If Buckley hadn't have been an ass it would have fallen into the dank pit of internet obscurity like the thousands of better written/drawn/funnier webcomics

We love it when an asshole gets their just desserts?

Well, let's see...He's a person who revels in his own messiah-dom (Wintereenmas), gives out proclamations and has a fanbase that hangs on his every word.

You have read "Why the hate on Christianity?", I assume?

Oh and Yahtzee hates him, and Yahtzee is the true messiah.

At the risk of massive flaming, I thought CAD had potential at first... But then Tim decided he could write... And he can't... He really can't...

CAD's been going downhill since the day Tim decided it would be a good idea to try to make a proper story, which he wouldn't recognize if it bludgeoned him into a coma and then stole his lunch money... Every new "storyline" just keeps trying to sink lower and lower.

I still enjoy CAD, even after Lilah was introduced and the storyline, as you guys claim, "went to shit." As another writer, I have nothing but respect for Buckley's story lines and as far as art goes, I can barely draw stick figures, so who am I to judge? I'm willing to bet that half of the people bitching A) haven't read the entire thing, B) can't draw a thing to save their lives, and C) wouldn't know a good story if it stripped naked in front of them and got into a mud wrestling match with Pamela Anderson.

And I'm so sick of this "Yahtzee says" stuff. Seriously, can't you guys think for yourselves? Just because Yahtzee didn't like one storyline, the lot of you go and bash the entire comic. Some of you haven't even read the comic!

And it was a miscarriage, not an abortion. Tim wrote that storyline because it was something personal and important to him, and if you can't respect that, then go jump off a cliff.

by abortion i think a lot of people are referring to the story itself, not the events of the story. and also, like I have said before, i admire Buckley for trying so hard to add drama and story to his script, but at the same time (and again i've said this before) he has no idea what he's doing with it. he's got no idea about serious character development and has no idea about how to make actions have consequences. There have been several times when Ethan should have wised up or pretended to have learned a lesson, but he doesn't because Buckely thinks its funny to have him do stupid things. And it is, but you can't have cake and eat it too. If you want us to care for a character, dont make him a selfish uncontrolled douche with no respect. this is just the latest in many opportunities he's had, and given himself, to change the comic for the better, and he's failed, again. I'm just sick of watching him flipflop. make a god damn decision!

It was always my understanding that for something to be able to "fall" that it had to have a high point somewhere. I've never been a fan of CAD; it just isn't funny to me and is really kinda pushing it when it chooses to describe itself as a "comic". It's more like a page out of a book that happens to have a picture under all of the text.

The only way to fall any lower when your already on the bottom is to pick up a shovel and start digging. If the thread maker's OP is an accurate judge of the CAD fans' opinions, that may be whats happening. Granted, I may not be the right person to be asked this, but it's my $.02 nevertheless.

A: Naturally. If a plot starts out horrible, it's not going to tend to get BETTER as time goes on. Case in point: Smallville.

B: Actually, I can. I even have a small sample of it online. It's not exactly Rembrandt, and I will certainly admit the site itself is rather cruddy, but... Argh, I guess the only way to properly explain WHY I think I'm a better artist than him is to put the link up. Venture in at your own risk, people.

http://www.freewebs.com/samuraigoomba/index.htm

Copyright of me, boilerplate. Anyway, this is my really old stuff, so excuse my massive ego size, but I think the me of today is a better artist than Buckley. And I think most other people can claim the same thing.

C: Actually I would, although I do prefer it when they strip and wrestle for me. Se7en, Monster, Hunter X Hunter, Silent Hill 2, The Spirit, Usagi Yojimbo, and even Platinum Grit are all examples of various forms of medium with deep, involving or well-written stories.

As for Yahtzee, I mostly don't agree with his webcomic recommendations. Platinum Grit got in my list just by being THAT good, but I don't care for his other picks.

Edit: Oh, but wait! The miscarriage!.. Actually, I was going to really get into this point, but I'm losing energy. Suffice it to say that putting a miscarriage into a webcomic is a horrible idea, unless your webcomic is Cyanide and Happiness, in which case the resulting joke is sure to be both hilarious and totally wrong.

I agree, I enjoy the sillies. However the whole release like 4 at a time once a week is lame.

In my mind web comics have always meant to be a source of comedy on the net but i've never found Ctrl+Alt+Del entertaining in the slightest even with friends sending the "best" of the series it's failed to bring about so much as a smirk on my face.
