I think Arch-vile tops my shit list.

A long range, undodgable, health shattering, fire spell?

Yes please?

Only way to dodge these attacks are to hide behind walls. Good luck doing that in an open environment.

The Tickers in the Ticker Tunnel in Gears of War 2 (the part where you have the big drill-pod truck following behind you providing you with a tiny area of light) on Hardcore. Your AI is absolutely retarded and they actually make it harder than it needs to be. I was getting frustrated, but my friend straight up rage-quit and refused to play the game ever again.

No mention of this SOB from X-Com?
I cry for my soon to be fallen team mates every time I see them.

In terms of regular (not boss) enemies these are the first ones that pop to mind for me:

Goddamn birds in the side scroller ninja gaiden.
Red Chocobos from FF:Tactics
Hammer Brothers from Super Mario Bros.
And the hands that drop from the ceiling in the Zelda games.
A very good list of some classic pain-in-the-ass enemies.

Though personally, I always found the standard Yellow Chocobos to be the most annoying. Sure the Black and Red could mess you up with their ranged attacks, but Choco Cure was sooooooooooooooooooo annoying! I forget the name of the battlefield, it's in Act 3 I believe. It's a big field that has a large river running through it. No joke: I fought a group of 15 assorted chocobo's there. Needless to say I got my ass kicked, all because of the god damn heals running around as free fuckin' healers.

Still not as crazy as the "Army of Monks" bug that you can sometimes encounter when fighting a random encounter on the field where you first meet Olan Literally the entire battlefield except the squares where your units are placed is filled with monks.

Those things were annoying as hell on Insanity... every time I would hear that shriek I'd just groan and yell "Go away! I hate you!"

I know there was one enemy in Prey I absolutely hated... coincidentally Tommy also hated that enemy. One point near the end of the game one of the enemies popped up and thought to myself "Oh God dammit not again!", which was immediately followed by Tommy shouting something similar. I don't remember anything about them other than the fact that they were flying enemies though.

EDIT

I forgot the Fel Reaver from World of WarCraft. It may not be much nowadays, but back in the Burning Crusade days the second you heard that roar and saw the shaking you knew you were dead. how something so massive always managed to sneak up on me still boggles my mind to this day.

Okay, I'm new to Dark souls. I'm in the Darkroot garden playing as a tanky motherfucking Knight. No enemy has one hit killed me EVER. I walk up to a tower and there he is, standing JUST INSIDE the doorway to the right, Havel the Rock. I'm like "Pfft, stone ass dude with a hammer, no problem". He prepares a swing, I put up my shield and BAM! He one hit kills me THROUGH MY BLOCK!

See that thing on the right? That's his shield! IT'S AS BIG AS HE IS!
Well there is a very easy way to fight Havel the Rock, basically he will never leave that doorway at the bottom of the tower so what you want to do is lure him to the door, get him to make an attack but make sure you are pretty far back so it can't hit you and then run in and hit him while he is recovering, he should have a panic attack and run back to where he spawned and lose aggro on you. Since he never heals his health unless you die or use a bonfire you can just repeat this process to safely take him down. You definitely want the ring he drops if you're using heavy armor to stay under 50% equip load.

Just wait til you come across the Anor Londo archers, they caused me a whole lot of grief the first time I encountered them. Fortunately the combustion pyromancies completely wreck them. The last couple of playthroughs I did I was lucky enough to have no problems with them but I was getting very nervous as I was making my way to that section of the game.

Also, brutes from Amnesia for pretty obvious reasons.

Oh and those damn spiders from Penumbra, fighting multiple massive spiders at once with a very slow pickaxe is pretty frustrating.

The double flaming sword guys from Drakan. They had little shields on their forearms and if they managed to block your attack they'd cut you down and then burn you to death. The first time I fought one it killed me over a dozen times.

-edit: The player is about 5 seconds from death in this picture

The first enemy that comes to mind that scared the crap out of me back when i was little was the first Dr. Robotnik boss battle on Sonic CD.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v727/KJCasey/DVDVR%20Gaming%20Poll%20-%2016%20Bit/53221-sonic-cd-sega-cd-screenshot-dr-robotnik.gif

The eerie, metal-clanging terror music filled my soul with fear. His stamping with that terrifying gundam mech thing shook the whole screen and unsettled me. And then whatt made it worse? I had no idea how to beat it; his stupid shield fists bounced me back, and his spiked feet robbed me of my rings. I don't remember ever getting pass there, period.

Then its ANY boss in devil may cry 3. Cerberus? Agni and Rudra? The demon queen that you get the electro-orb guitar from? The whole lot of 'em, maddeningly hard.

Then dealing with big daddy's in Bioshock; there was no way i could go at one without dying several times.

The Marlboros in the FF games. Then in FF12 you got Niphoala and I was finally able to exact vengance:p

Also the Tonberries. I remember one time in FFX-2 where I was doing that Cloister thing at Besaid Temple and got to like level 34 avoiding them by accident and I saw this tiny one and thought: "Why not?"...

I scared the little one off and next thing I knew Mama Tonberry appeared...

Needless to say she one shotted the entire team.

Banshee's in ME3, I hated fighting those, always getting so close and took forever to take down,

And the zombie things at the end of Uncharted 1. Technically they weren't that hard, but I found them scary as and dreaded fighting them

Gekko from Metal Gear Solid 4 (not so much in Metal Gear Rising, as you seem to be able to kill them with relative ease).

Gekko are almost invulnerable. The only way to kill them is to shoot their legs till they fall over, then destroy the sensor on their heads. They deal a decent amount of damage, and without a rail gun, they're invincible without hitting their weak point. They are, admittedly, kinda easy to avoid, as they're kinda derpy, though. I just hate them cause of how annoying they are to dispose of.

I really SHOULD be putting enemies like the Muton's, Berserker's, Cyberdisk's, Commander Sectoids, etc. down for they are all much more dangerous but for some reason, the Chrysalid is the only one that I fear even though one hasn't been near my squad due to getting completely destroyed by my squad. Shit, I've lost...fifteen men or so in my second play-through and Muton's have killed 3/4 of them...
agree about those chrysalids lol how many of those other enemies infect other humans and turn them into medium-high HP hard hitting monsters?

Psh... get a decent skill with guns and a sniper rifle and Cazadores are easy pickings. But I can see how they would be a pain for melee characters.

My personal favorite (and by favorite, I mean I hate them with the passion of 100 suns) are these guys...

Seriously, screw reavers.

Another person who has heard of Drakan! I thought I was the only one in the world at this point. Considering it's my favorite game of all time it gets kinda frustrating to know how obscure it is. I mean come on, it's a dragon rider game that actually lets you freely fly around on your dragon (shock and horror), has fun interactions between dragon and rider and doesn't have 5 different "fuck you player" endings (*cough* Drakengard *cough*). The PS2 sequel was entirely open world too. This franchise so deserves to come back to life... But I doubt Warner even know they own it.
