Ba'erth sighed and sat down. Some people would never learn. He would be willing to work with an evil man to achieve a righteous goal, but not to answer to one.
He slipped Biter and Darkbane back into their sheaths and sighed once more. He hadn't realised how out-of-breath he'd gotten. He was sensing a very dark presence aboard this ship, and it was draining him.
"Given everything that's conspired between us of late, I wouldn't hold it against you if you told me to be off," he said, turning to Kala.
"But I'm incredibly thirsty, and the last time I had wine was 173 years ago. Do you mind...?" he asked, looking towards the flask. Kala just smiled and offered him a swig.
He sat for a while, focusing on the source of the disturbance, and traced it to somewhere nearby.
"Lilly, I sense evil nearby. I'm going to go and see what it is. I don't think it would be wise, however, to go alone."
"I'll come with you, then," Tailgate replied.
Ba was unlike any other man she'd ever met. Not protective of her in the least, which was very attractive, she had to admit. She had never felt fragile in her life, and it bothered her a great deal when people acted as if she'd break at the slightest touch. SHe may have only been 19, but she could handle herself.
Ba'erth lead the way through the corridor and took the first right, hands tucked under his cloak and ready to draw his blades in an instant if need be.
"So, tell me about yourself," Lilly said to Ba, smiling.
"I was born to be a human sacrifice and rescued by The Order of the Light. From what I've been told, my own mother had the knife poised and ready to strike before The Order came in. They charged in with a righteous fire and cut the cultists down with ease. He paused.
"The snow ran red with blood that day. My parent's blood."
Tailgate wished that she hadn't brought it up.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have pressed you."
"Press me? he laughed.
"My dear, you didn't press me at all! But why don't you tell me about yourself? What makes Lilly Lilly? And how did you end up aboard such a fine ship?"
"Well I originally wanted to be a regular pilot, maybe for the military. Either way I found myself at the Airforce flight school. I was the top of my class and halfway through the course I was pulled and put straight into the cockpit of a Striker V-15. I started off doing recon, but soon enough I was flying straight into black zones. A little while after that I was given my own STALKER and put to work as Alpha squad's dedicated pilot. All the while doing orbital drops alongside Sentinel. Of course, back then he was called Shadow."
Ba'erth didn't seem to be listening anymore. Lilly felt hurt, and was about to tell him off when she noticed something bout him. His smile was gone. His beautifu Golden mane flowed from his head and his luxurious Golden eyes peered straight past her. Everything about him was as it should be, save for his smile.
"It is here." Lilly looked around.
"What is?"
"A dark one. He watches us right now. Can you not feel it? His gaze penetrating your very being?"
Lilly was starting to worry.
"Ba... are you ok?"
He shot his eyes up at her and held her gaze for a few moments. He managed a weak grin.
"I'm fine. I think we might be outmatched. We should return to the others."
Lilly looked into his eyes for a little while, then nodded her agreement.
"Alright. Here," she said, moving to help support him. He was looking weak all of a sudden.
"Do you need a hand?"
"Yes, thank you, Lilly," Ba'erth replied, allowing her to wrap his arm around her shoulders.
They started back towards the control room.
