Move quicker!
The author was quicker on the uptake this time; and dodged that one, and began to flip to the page listed in the TOC (Table of Contents).
Noticing the fact that her student was quickly picking up on how to navigate the book, she started moving the arrows much closer to the girl, taking immense care not to hit the eyes. Aiming at the panel, she hit a few spots that caused the room to start shaking like there was an earthquake. The paladin jumped around the room, firing even more screeching arrows at angles which were designed to disorient Teri and hit the spots where the earlier arrows had impacted before, further increasing the distractions.
"Move faster, trainee! Every moment you hesitate, that's an ally being attacked by someone! Every time you have to pause, that's a person bleeding out! Every time you have to think, that's a moment of weakness!"
Teri dodged another arrow, it clipping her side as she moved away from it. Slindis was right, she needed to be quicker! Teri finally found the page she was looking for, and hurriedly read the page about magic diseases.
"Okay, so the first is Cackle Fever, Cackle Fever
Symptoms include high fever, disorientation, and frequent bouts of hideous laughter. Also known as ?the shrieks.?"
She felt another arrow hit her leg, and Teri grunted in pain; and she continued reading;
"Cascade Flu: can ruin one's ability to properly use psionics. Caused by brain moles and similar vermin. It will often show when the afflicted psionic attempts to use his or her powers; in which random use of their powers will occur."
"You're the saddest excuse of a cleric I've ever seen! Back home, you'd be weeded out and cast aside. Don't try to lie to yourself: You'd be better off in some bar serving drinks to any person that wandered in there. Why even try, with how clumsy you are?"
Teri slowed a little at that statement, and was reminded of her own personal demons.
"You're not good enough to get on in life. You will NEVER be good enough. Why bother?" Statements such as that had forced her to hide from the world. Hell, it was why she joined an RP. She was alone, and wanted a common reason to interact with people. She wanted to be someone else. A warrior who could conquer any before him. A proud and powerful dragon who acted as his conscious. A Tonberry devoted to protect one whom he loved as his Mother.
All facets of a sad and lonely college student, even if some of them were not of her own creation. Was she really worth fighting in the name of God? Why did she come here anyway? Because she wanted to help these people, or because she was running away?
"Of course I want to help everyone. she thought to herself,
I came here because I was told it was for the best of everyone. Even the Devil himself told me I was to be a center of morality for us Writers. To make sure we didn't abuse Resets and whatnot."
Ah, but there it was, the Devil in the details. For all she knew, he could have been lying to her. But that's the funny thing about the Devil. For all his repute of being the Prince of such things; he personally said that the One Upstairs had faith in her. Why would he lie about that? But that's when it struck the Writer, both literally and physically. Another arrow had hit her in the knee, knocking her off her center of balance.
She could see her Mentor advance upon her with the bow, the same stern look on her face,
"Giving up? If so, then you are of no use as a Cleric. Go home and be a normal little girl." And she held her bow ready at the young Writer, ready to fire a shot.
Teri shook her head, before rolling away from the arrow.
"He gave me my powers, didn't He?" The Writer continued to think,
"And if God gave me this gift, then I am of still worth to him! I am worthy of this power! And because of that, no one can take that away from me!"
She looked into the book again, and began to read; new determination filling her.
