Haven't seen an intelligent thread yet. I've seen a lot of people pretend to be intelligent. Big difference between faking it around people who don't know and being it around people who do.

Bahahahaha...that's actually pretty funny. I'm probably going to be flamed for only having 2 posts, but I've been on these forums with various usernames (anyone remember Wouldukindly? ...ouch, thought not) for the past year or so and I can officially say that these are hardly intelligent forums.

Every thread about religion devolves into a flame war, political discussion is limited to 'you're a fascist/liberal because you disagree with me' and although I hate grammar nazism, some posts are unreadable. Threads repeat over and over as well.

If I were to put up a truly intellectual thread, like say, a discussion over realism and neo-liberal thought in the current atmosphere of globalization, I wonder how many comments it would get? (and how many of them would just be political heresay back and forth)

That being said, there's far worse places on the dreaded internets.
I would say both theories have merit,(at least in international relations) Realisms approach of nations being rational unitary actors in an anarchic system, while I feel is correct, it also ignores nations acting on principle or on a co-op basis. I personally favor realism, but I also think there is a simple middle ground, combining the self serving, relative gains approach of realism with the idea that there is still an order and co operation within the international community. This is one issue I have with academia they always seem to ignore the common sense in favor of shoehorning something to fit one particular theory.

Anyways,
Most stuff here is just people trying to sound smart, or people who have taken an econ 101(or such) class in college that think they are the be all end all because they think they understand keynes, the Austrian school, or supply side. (or respective theories in respective fields of study(science, history, business etc))

EDIT: high five fellow name changer, I to used to be a 2k poster here.

Yes please do, about ME *maniacal laughter*

But agreeing with Asciotes, we would most likely be stupid if we went to 4chan, not going to find out though

You're suggesting that the forums were only good due to the presence of a handful of elite members. If that's true, then the forums were never good.

Look, these forums will seem good or bad depending on how you view them. If you come here seeking calm and mature intellectual discussion, then you will be sorely disappointed. If you come here just looking to kill some time, then it won't seem nearly as bad.

Eh, I grew disillusioned with the Escapist rather quickly.

I like some of the articles and some of the videos here, but beyond that I don't pay much attention to most of the threads here.

This might be one of the better communities I've stumbled across over the internet, but not because of intellectuality. Moderation helps keep this community well-behaved enough, but that won't do anything against all the cookie thread equivalents. Far be it from me to call myself an intellectual, I don't use that word lightly, but I think the Escapist is definitely not there either, not even close.

Eurgh, here we go again - your either a troll trying to trick me into saying the following or your just a very gullible user who's yet to stay on any site long enough to notice flaws...

This site does not have an intelligent forum community - at least, not in the sense they claim to be intelligent - there is little to no intellectual discussion on the boards - it's an interesting forum yes, but it's not intelligent.

The video's themselves...are not that intelligent either - they have to appeal to a wide audience - I don't know which video's you mean exactly but off the top of my head I can't think of any I'd claim to contain "intelligent" comedy.
Yep. I don't want to seem like I'm insulting The Escapist itself, but these forums are far from intelligent. At any given point in time, at least 5 of the threads in the top rotation will be mindless bashing/flaming or a repeat thread of something we talked about 2 hours ago. Or both.
Yeah third-ed.
Fourthed, though I don't think it's as bad as some people have said not everyone here is an idiot, it's still hardly an intellectual site-though that might have more to do with how people view intellectualism than anything else.

But yeah, stay here long enough and you'll see the that there's always been a small group of relatively infrequent and temporary (they leave after a few hundred posts) users who post the same shit I'd expect to find on youtube or Gamestop.

Well, I guess this is our fault for letting the Escapist grow so much.

I'm suggesting that members who tried to make this place more intellectual succeeded in doing so. Of course those are only the ones I could think of off the top of my head. My point being most of the members I remember who brought up potent questions are now gone. When I first started there were several intelligent threads. Now, not so much.

Sorry, but I have a feeling that is just blind nostalgia. Even if those member did make intellectual threads (which some of them most certainly did it), it doesn't mean they vastly improved the quality of the forums. If an intellectual thread is going to survive then you need intellectuals to support it. I've seen many long, detailed threads fade into obscurity with about 7 posts.

Without those members the "intelligent" thread count has dropped substantially. I'm not saying it was high in the first place but those threads were the ones that would make me read every post and actively participate in. I agree smart threads dont last long, though I would like to see them get past the second page. There is nothing I can do about it though. I can ***** all I want but thats not going to improve anything.

Why don't you make intellectual threads if this bothers you so much?

With the exception of the "what is the best biscuit" thread, i would agree with you.
I am shocked, sir!

That thread made me look deeply into my very being, and forced me to choose...

Chocolate Digestive or Custard Cream?
It was the deepest thread I ever made!

I wouldn't say we are so vastly intelligent so much as we try and abide by the rules the moderators set before us. But there are idiots here, don't think for a second there aren't.

Ive tried, and a few have gotten a few responces (See my What defines humanity [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.147634#3403135] thread, as an attempt to generate a good discussion). However I dont create many as my brain is often occupied with school work. I'm only one man!
