I agree that people here are generally more intelligent OVERALL than other sites *cough* youtube *cough* . However, you do get the occasional idiot.

With the exception of the "what is the best biscuit" thread, i would agree with you.
I am shocked, sir!

That thread made me look deeply into my very being, and forced me to choose...

Chocolate Digestive or Custard Cream?
Jaffa Cakes my good man.

In my experience, claiming you're intelligent usually proves otherwise (if you're really smart then that should speak for itself).

Compared to certain other forums I've been on there is a greater level of maturity here but unfortuneatly that also seems to come with the drawback of a greater level of elitism (pick your poison).

We are opinionated I guess, but I've seen much more intelligent discussion on smaller forums elsewhere, that's for damn sure.
Agreed. The people at the escapist can be a bit more on the mature side, but like any other forum of its size it still somehow manages to devolve into chaos at a moments notice. I've actually been on forums where the people are so good at keeping themselves in line that the mods rarely ever need to lift a finger.

This is just really a topic to pay The Escapist a well deserved kudos and a celebratory hear-hear for attracting a largely intellectual audience. I have noticed recently that the large majority of topics and posts on this site are either of great relevence to the current world state and often ask us to question ourselves as to what we really think of todays society or are based around scientific or philosophical concepts which really broadens our horizens and asks us to think outside the box.
While the questions are of great relevance, often the answers are of great ignorance. The escapist has some of the best examples of intellectual discussion I have ever seen. But it equally has some of the absolute worst.

Oh, please. We get just as many trolls and flame-baiter's on here as you would find on any other site there are just two fundamental differences.

The first is that unlike a lot of sites the Mods on here actually do a pretty good job. They usually lock down problem threads very quickly and usually give the right response to people causing trouble.

The second is what confuses some people. We tend to be a lot more literate than many other sites and for some reason people seem to confuse this for intelligence. People use this as a mask to troll in ways that don't draw attention and due to the fact that they are well written (In terms of grammar, spelling and punctuation) they are seen as 'opinions' rather than trolling.

A few examples should be made. Halo cannot be discussed properly any more thanks to people who claim to dislike it and yet seek out every thread they can on the subject in order to criticise it; this is hardly something an 'intellectual' would waste their time doing.

Religion. A lot of people are here are atheists; a decent amount of them are able to discuss the pros and cons of religion in a sensible and respectful manner. A select amount of the vocal ones, which is only just a minority will insult and criticise religion without knowing anything about it. They will not listen to reason (despite claiming that they are 'free' and 'logical' thinkers due to not being restrained by belief) and seek to blame all of humanities flaws in the belief of God. Again, hardly something an intellectual would do.

That's why they devolve into a flamewar. Someone makes an ignorant statement that a lot people find insulting and then it tends to go downhill from there.

I really enjoy the forums here but have noticed that the more intellectual the question being posed, the less likely it is to get many responses.

Even on a site like the escapist, people are lazy. Who wants to write a paragraph as a comment these days? It is much easier to just click on the thread about "Who is your favorite super hero" and give your one word response along with the other 20 pages of pointless babble than to click on the one concerning politics and actually have to think about what it is you're saying.

It is a damn shame in my opinion that this is the case but I suppose until things change, the threads about your favorite flavor of cookie will always prevail over the questions about how the corrupt government social structure can cause problems not only for its own people, but for neighboring nations trying to stabilize their own economies and governments.

In fact I bet most people anyone who reads this won't even read down enough on this post to see this sentence.
