YES! I am original!

OT: Just as long as people who don't get the "DLC" don't get treated as second class citizens by the staff, mods and various people who bought premium, then I'm fine.

If they take away any of the stuff we have now then I will leave.
Is this where the fear is coming from? The whole idea that the premium people will look down on the free users? The free users aren't losing anything from not buying the DLC, everything will stay the same, its just adding things not taking things. I'm sure the escapist will be the same site no matter what.
It also has to do with the bastardization of titles. Prior to this Titles were something you had to EARN. It was a badge of honor, a sign you had endeavored and worked hard for it.

It's like if some man spent 50 years climbing the ranks of an army to become a general only to later find out people could buy their way into the rank. It would be an insult to them and what they had done.

One thing I have noticed through all of my 138 post is that when I joined, there were a lot more variety in opinions. Now most people here seem to feel the same way about many things. I've see a couple threads as of late about how people hate Modern Warfare, or just threads that lead nowhere and are forgotten quickly. While I haven't done much here, I can see why people feel that this site has changed.
As long as this premium content does not make me unable to enjoy the time I spend here, then I'm staying.

I watch the "Big Users" come and go, and only joined after stalking the forums for a while. I don't feel particularily attached to it.

I think people have been enjoying the site less because the "cool guys" as ajb924 put it have been saying that the site isn't as good as it used to be. When you see people who are escapist veterans complaining about the site it brings the whole mood down. It makes new people feel kinda guilty for coming here and 'ruining' The Escapist.

If you want to leave then fine, leave. Just don't have a ***** about how us newer members are 'ruining' it for you. If you want a site with small forums there are plenty out ther I'm sure.

Wait, how is being elitist a good thing?
Top hats? Fine wine? Monocles? How is it a bad thing?
Edit: Fine...
It makes us feel smarter than the rest of the internet. And we are mostly better than them. Because we use good grammar and don't argue.
Wait, so using good grammar makes you better than others now?
DON'T ARGUE!?
Don't make me laugh. Maybe YOU don't, but every week I see something along the lines of "JRPG's suck because..." or "JRPGs are awesome because..." and then there's the good old "FOX NEWS IS EVIL. REPUBLICANS IS SATAN." Those aren't as common as the previously mentioned 2, but I've seen them.

The thing is, the people here began to like the idea that they were smarter then 4chan. And some people decided it wasn't enough so they needed to prove they were better than everyone here as well.

Damn..I thought the community was better than this. This is certainly a depressing thread. The Escapist now seems like a cold and hostile place....brrr.....

Heh, Sorry.

Is it nostalgia time again?
I don't have any complaints, maybe I will next time this thread rolls around, but not today. I wish I was more connected to the community, but thats my problem and stems from the size of the Escapist, not anything being wrong. I read as much as I can but I can't keep up, I'm not even sure people consider me a part of the community.

For those feeling depressed, remember: Like the theme of this thread, the good times will come again.

Back in the "good old days" as people call it for some reason, it was a smaller community, making it harder to get into. With a tight-nit community, a new user's post may just be overlooked compared to "regulars".

That hasn't really changed that much. Granted post counts don't matter anymore, and I believe thats a good thing. A very good thing. Although people still seem to "idolize" the "celebrities" with high post counts, they need to stop. Because its stupid.

The only thing that happened to the site was that it got bigger. And when it gets bigger, its pros and cons get bigger. If people aren't contributing thoughtful discussions, its up to the older member to tell them so and make the newer members into better members. Not shun them or just give up and walk away from the site. Thats just stupid. Giving up and walking away won't solve anything. Whatever site you go to next will go through the same pattern. Its up to everyone to make every member of this site contribute intelligent discussions. And walking away instead of helping to make people better posters just means your part of the problem. We call ourselves a mature and great community. But when people just up and leave and complain about the site? That just shows we're no better than any other website. Its just childish.

Ya, the whole elitist thing has slowly fallen since I came here. Now all I see anymore are list threads about favorite whatevers or flame wars about religion.

But coming here the good grammar and the intelligent discussion made me feel like this was an intelligent place for a while. Now that I've been here for months I've seen otherwise. I'm beginning to realize how redundant everything is. Posting feels like going through the motions now.

The forums haven't changed, just my perception has. And that's enough to make me leave. Like I said though, I'll probably stay for a few more badges then run off to the horizon.

The whole ideas that the freed users will be looked down on by the premium? Yeah, I think that's very very likely given this website. Already I see so many people displaying their new names and their "I'm a premium user" badge. The badges are a mark of pride as such, and how you think of yourself. I don't display my badges in the order I received them, and I don't think other people do either. Even within a day, people are displaying their badges, this is only the beginning as far as I can see.

And also, there are things not being offered to non-Premium users. It's a fine line, but things like the sneak peeks, the premium members only forum? Yeah, 'cause none of that is going to lead to further elitism.

This site was already one of the most elitst I've come across, and now it's been split further. At least this time the divide is actually monetary, which I suppose is somewhat fitting.
Can you show me some of this elitism people keep talking about? I don't get on these forums much do to school, but when I do get on nobody is an elitist (as far as I know) and everyone is really kind.

Can you explain how people got customized titles, before this premium thing went on? I'm still fairly new to this site. BTW I love your avatar that part in Lucky Star made me laugh.

I'm not quite certain. Title names used to have a sort of aura about them that would give the user a sort of presence in the forums.

Now that is all gone. It's a similar situation to how George Lucas fucked up The Force.

Maybe the lack of different opinions come from too many repeat topics? There was a thread I saw a couple of days ago in the religion and politics section about polygamy. It was asking what you thought about polygamy. Every single poster on that thread (it was about 2 pages long at this stage) had said that they don't mind it but they wouldn't do it. That's probably an extreme case of what you are talking about.

In short; Boring topics = boring repetitive opinions.
The remedy for this is to make broad topics that you know people will have different and/or clashing opinions and and avoid topics like "your favourite" and "where are you from".

Ahh, more venting for me.

Frankly, I think this is the last straw for my time here. I came here a while ago, though not as long as you two, but the site has changed, and I think I've either outgrown it or out lived it. The giving out exclusive stuff is nice, but not exclusive forums.

At the risk of sounding like a melodramatic *****, I think I may be leaving the site for good, and only popping in once in a while to drop a review or Run review Wars.
I dunno. I mean, its just not the same site I fell in love with. I hate having a huge post count, and that's a big reason that I may be leaving.

I dislike not being able to do something that "isn't pimppeter2" to some people. I was a lot like NoMoreSanity until my ban, and my second ban. But I softened up becuase I didn't want to get into any more trouble. but frankly, I miss being able to argue my ass off (the reason I joined the site), without a group of people that "know me" telling me I'm behaving strangely.

I posted this in the Asylum group, so I'll post it here

Its not only the premium content. Its everything. That was just the last straw. When I joined, I couldn't even count the people that I cared about on the forums. It has to do with my sudden "popularity"

Now, I think there's less then ten people that I genuinely like running into on the forums. Souplex, WanderFreak, Zombie Fish, Neon Bob, orranis, and Swollen Goat. Its not to say I don't like the rest of you guys, but its something I've been feeling for a long time even before this.

I've been with the site since '07. And too much has changed. Whether its for the better or the worse is subjective. I frankly feel nothing for the people on here any more.

You're mostly all dull, personality less copies of eachother. Hub is exactly like Furburt, and their exactly like lord C, and Demented teddy, who is exactly like snooty, and JK and ext.

You're all carbon copies of what the regular escapist member is with only half the personality.

I miss being able to call someone a fucking idiot without ten people breething down my neck telling me that "the real pimppeter2 wouldn't say that".

You guys are all nice, but after all it is a fuckin website, and I'm sick and tired of the community.

I feel like the community has out grown me. Its no longer my home site, or even the place I enjoy coming to that much.

I guess its just a habit. I guess my moment of like yours would be when Max was banned. Not that I was particularly close to the kid, but he signified the end of the users I was part of. The other two being people like you and New Classic and Zombie Fish, but for a long time you guys had all been on a posting hiatus, and I never say any of you. Then Max and Sanity got banned, and all I was left with was people like Hub and Furburt, who are great people, but I just don't care about them.

I'll scroll down to read Zombie Fish's or your post, but I rarely scroll to find what Hub has said on the subject.

I feel "trapped" in with a group of people I cannot identify with.

So those are my random musings on the subject taken from conversations I've had today and lumped into a big post for everyone to enjoy.

Again, don't be offended about this. This is just my honest opinion and some venting. I just really need to get this stuff off my chest.

I dunno, I think its a bad idea. Mainly becuase the people that are most loyal to the site are teens like me with too much time on their hands, and no credit cards. I may pay the fee just to "support the site", because I do love the site. But I just can't shake the feeling that things have changed, and for me personally for the worse.

I all fairness, you're exactly like the rest of us "carbon copies". The only difference is, you have a high post count. So stop acting like you're some sort of God amongst men.
You're not. You are just like the rest of us.
Sorry.

OP: I'm sorry your not enjoying The Escapist any more, but I personally believe that the site is getting much better.

I'm still just as in love with this place than I was on day one.

I really don't think that The Escapist adding a premium membership is a big deal. The Escapist just wants some more money.

Who can argue with that?

Besides, customizable titles are nifty.

Mine would say:

To be frank, do people really pay attention to custom titles and how many posts a person has or how many badges they have in total? Because I just read people's posts and quote them if they said something interesting. I treat everyone the same regardless of title or how many posts.

I'm gonna have to agree with the "who cares" argument. This is the exact same thing as arguing that a band is selling out. Just because some people act similarly doesn't really mean anything, everyone pretty much has a psychological archetype, on a place as large as the internet you shouldn't be suprised to see two that a similar. The Escapist is making an attempt to turn their false internet moneyz into real world dollars, and I respect that. I intend to one day buy the title when I can purely to help LRR get their feet off the ground.

To see a place like this fall to pieces just because of memberships makes me think that it has to be something else, everything is better in hindsight because you don't notice all the bullshit that went on when it was happening. I intend to look back on this probably week or so where shit went downhill and laugh, but that's just me.

The problem with a lot of members is that either they imitate Yahtzee or they act like they are only intelligent people on the internet, seriously some people on here remind me of Vulcans with their logic and whatnot, I remeber a news report about a 3 year old girl who shot herself on because she thought the gun was a wii zapper, and some guy said "she deserved it, I believe in Darwins theory.
And there was another guy on a thread about 9/11 who said "Whats the big deal about 9/11, its not like anyone important died" I had a short argument with him about how it shouldnt matter if anyone important died, and that all those people were important to others, he then told me that people need to stop thinking selfishly, as my mother passed recently i got incredibly angry at this guy, I really wanted to know why he thought that regular people dying wasn't important, if I had met him in real life I actually would have punched him.

Those are the two worst examples i'vr come across and not many people are like these two, but yes I do find some people on here to be, well, dicks. Although right now there is more than enough to warrant me staying for a long time

Actually, the reason I'm displaying mine isn't that I'm flaunting a status symbol, so much as it is showing everybody familiar with me that I'm on-board with the idea, to show that not everybody that's been here for more than a month needs to go apeshit over the site offering incentives for a donation. To say "hey, look at me, I have a few extra dollars to throw around" would be absolutely silly, and I can't really see myself using much of the exclusive content.

I'm simply showing my support for the site's harmless decision.
