I've discovered so many great things through the pages of these forums: new music, hidden gem games, books worth reading and most of all a community of liked minded people. A lot of the Escapist user base consists of young adults who themselves are in a sense lost. Often times this very community and the retreat we take in video games are the only constant in our lives, thus rendering the entire user base of the Escapist to be simply awesome.

Gamers. Whether they like the title or not.
I remember your thread and suppourt this statement fully. This is probably the most accurate generalisation you can make with one word.

Well, to start off I would go with we are all gamers.

Then in no particular order, WBC hating, lots of apparent a/bi/homo/pan-sexuals, the bronies, the cynics, the people that see that good in everyone, the "I have no faith in humanity because x reason" guys, the spambots, the fanboys (and girls), the haters, anti-Activision, anti-EA (unless against Activision), pro-Valve, hipsters, atheists and religious. Of course there are many more various ways to describe us all but I think the main one is gamers. And it's still one of the better, more friendly forums on the internet.

Oh and, judging by the reaction to the red button, massive Bieber-haters

Gamers?

Though that may be completely crazy.

Also many are socially awkward, asexual, and anime fans.

I've gotten the impression that the userbase is mainly made up of anti-piracy suckers of corporate co... Well you get the idea without me having to get too graphic.

And yes, it does sadden me how so many people who actually claim to like video games can be so easily duped by corporate propaganda...
Gah, a hipster! Burrrrrrn it!

OT: Mostly people who like video games and movies.

I can't believe nobody has brought out the list yet: here it is in all its glory:

YOU ARE
-Male
-Age 15-25
-Straight
-Grew up somewhere in the middle class playing tons of video games
-Above-average intelligence but an underachiever
-Racist to some degree
-Non-Religious

Post this absolutely anywhere on the internet (well, on general nerd sites anyway; specialty sites aimed at a different crowd tend to have a different set of defining characteristics), and you'll get a huge number of people going "huh, that really does describe me. Heck, the only thing on the list that categorically doesn't apply to me is the non-religious part. The "racist to some degree" one wouldn't either, but the wording is so broad that I don't think there's a person on the planet who can completely truthfully say that it doesn't apply to them.

As for some more Escapist-specific traits:

We have a lot of industry cheer leaders who rush to defend any attack on their rights as consumers, as long as the company making said attack isn't either EA or Activision,

As a corollary to that, we have a lot of people who immediately attack EA and Activision any time they're mentioned, whether it's justified in that specific instance or not (Face it, guys, Origin is no more evil than Steam, and for that matter, a big part of the reason it exists is because of Valve's insistence on getting a cut of any DLC profits on any game sold in their store; EA understandably didn't want to deal with that, since they could just as easily sell the DLC through the individual games and cut out the middle man)

As a second corollary, Valve can do no wrong, even when they're blatantly doing something evil.

A lot of "games as art" snobs who are apparently incapable of appreciating the fact that games have value as games, and don't really need to be considered "art" to be a valid hobby

people with a huge persecution complex (any time games get mentioned in the mainstream press, as opposed to the gaming press, gamers everywhere start to whine about the "inevitable" attacks on the medium that, oddly enough, almost always fail to materialize; apparently a lot of gamers never got the memo that it's not 1994 anymore. Especially confusing since so many of them weren't even born at the time. This one is more of a general gamer thing, though.)

Bronies, Bronies everywhere (Again, the same could be said of the internet at large, but we have a higher than usual concentration for a non-pony focused site)

People who attack Fox News at every possible opportunity (I hate Newscorp as much as the next guy, but the percentage of stories that show up on Fox News, especially on the website, that are completely skewed and off base is quite a bit lower than the 100% gamers seem to think it is.)

I could keep listing stuff all day; as much as I love certain elements of this community, other elements really get on my nerves at times. Not that everything I listed on here was something that annoys me -- for example, I'm a Brony myself -- but there are a lot of things in this community that don't really mesh well with me. That could honestly be said of any forum, though; this is the one I call home, and while I may not always be proud of it, I always wind up coming back.

As far as I can tell, based on all the threads I've browsed through, the most common description of an Escapist member is a socially-awkward atheistic lesbian combat arts master[footnote]There may be some margin of error in my research.[/footnote].
Close enough, although I wouldn't say I'm a master of combat arts, I do have a rather good understanding of where to hit people where it hurts.

I'm also under the sneaking suspicion that this thread is one of those tests where you give out a random bunch of descriptors and expect about 90(ish)% of the community you're describing to claim to not be those things.

What I'm getting at is this: how do you even define what a "nerd" is supposed to be?

Most of us are already adults here so to see someone jump in here and call other people "nerds" is kinda silly, especially when he didn't even explain what "nerd" means, or how it relates to adulthood for that matter.

See what I mean?

Are you in highschool, or something similar? I could see how that silly notion would appear to work within your context, but you assume way too much of the rest of us, wouldn't you say?

A lot of gamers.
A lot of really nice people.
A lot of fun.
A lot of fairly intelligent folks.
A lot of people who try to be edgy, but really just need a hug *gives hug*
A lot of people who hate humanity because of what some dicks did.
A lot of people who aren't so nice.
A lot of discussions.
A lot of people from various countries.
A lot of fans of something or other.
A lot of music.

All in all, a lot of diversity.

Apparently the notion was clear enough for you to understand and get offended by it? Get over yourself. Nerd has a colloquial commonly accepted meaning and you were well aware of it when I first posted it. If you want to patronize me pick a more appropriate situation. No matter how old you are, you're never above social stigmas.

Offended? Dude, you said, and I quote: "Most of you are nerds," which to me sounds like something an actual "nerd" would say given that he is using the term himself, or at least someone who is familiar with them. It's not that hard to derive the meaning that the person writing it may be a nerd and is trying to coax a reaction of someone. I mean, what am I supposed to think?

And yes, it is silly. Not everyone is your same culture, and not everyone has your same background to use the term; and even then, anyone can be called a "nerd" for pretty much about any possible reason you can think of.

I just assumed you actually had a definition for "nerd" and wouldn't mind explaining. I don't see how you can get testy b/c someone asked you whether or not you are in highschool or something similar.

I'm not gonna do a back and forth where I say you were offended and you say you weren't; basically, your reaction was that of an offended person, deny it all you want. You understood what I meant, you didn't like what I was saying. Simple as that.
