The "fun-shooters" return. But why would anyone want that?

Because EVERY FREAKING GAME tries to be realistic nowadays, old games had a sense of HUMOR to them, it's the humor and colorful graphics we want back, not the terrible and outdated level design that you and I both hate.
even COD4 still retained some humour (surely, you can't be serious) but any even hint of fun is sucked out of Modern Warfare 2 and Black ops ends on imagery of the Kennedy assassination... talk about downer.
Cod 4 was good and I liked it, but most fps games today like battlefield bad company 2 are just... eh, been there done that.

Dramatization of Realism Mode: Oh yay 20 zombies that all share the same 4 skins.
Actually, a lot more goes into the creation of the infected textures than there just being 4 skins.

For me, it's nice to see a return of mindless fluffy shooters. Think of it like movies: Sure, Oscar-winning dramas are really good, but sometimes you just wanna watch Die Hard.
die hard isnt that great of an example because it dosent quite cover it, since it actually had a decent plot and decent acting, and only about a dozen bad guys, its a bit more like watching the expendables or rambo, those kinds of movies.

in short, i agree.

And who says they're going use such old school tactics like locking you in a room?

I played through the Bulletstorm demo and that never happened once.
Granted it was a short demo, but the area was pretty well designed with lots of detail, and things to kick people into.

I seriously doubt that any competent developer is just going to ignore years of progress in the FPS genre. No one is that stupid.

I don't get why people are going around saying shit like 'Yay, DNF will be a blast of fresh air from all these modern gritty shooters' because (and this is what I hate the most) they constantly rant on about how old games are better.

NO THEY FUCKING AREN'T.
Yes, they may have been better at the time, but are you telling me that Duke Nukem 3D is better than L4D? By TODAY's standards?
nope, but i'll say kingdom hearts 2 is better than any game i ever have or ever will [unless KH3 turns out to be God's jizz in disc form also dont quote me on this to prove me wrong by saying KH is a completely different game to any FPS because i know this and am making my point that 98% of FPS games today are cod rip-offs and they all blow, good day :)]

i would just be happy to see "gritty realism" get a kick in the balls. And by that i mean that these games show that an FPS doesn't have to look or feel realistic to be fun. After that, killing waves of enemies can be fun if the game makes each foe different, has different strengths and weaknesses and their presence affects the foes around them.

In any case i'd just like to see this pretense of seriousness dropped cause they definitely don't take their stories serious in most cases. And it might encourage developers to get creative with their mechanics to make some games that actually feel unique.

I think its less about going backwards on Game Design, as trying to be a little more whimsical as far as stories go. Right now its all Space Marines and Regular Marines, a little variety would be nice, am I right?

Personally, I had a better time playing through Serious Sam 2 and Duke Nukem 3D than I did playing through Call of Duty: Black Ops (which is the only recent Call of Duty I've played). A much, MUCH better series of absolutely superlative shooters is TimeSplitters, which show that you can indeed be both fun and goofy without being light on quality.
Which pretty much just helps support the idea that what the world really needs is more Timesplitters. Those were supremely goofy games that were a TON of fun to play!

Tactical Shooters are fun in their own right, but I don't think ALL FPS games should become 'Modern Warfare' clones/replicas... the action is slow paced and requires too much thinking sometimes, you just want a doom/quake/duke nukem romp of blasting people away every 5 seconds.
Haha, Modern warfare and tatical shooters in the same sentence.

OT: I think they should try something new instead, old shooters have had their day and in my opinion so have the call of duty type games, they should go in a different direction rather than just remaking old games with better graphics.

Oh I am sure. How each of the skins look after a certain shot was fired (making an axe cut on the skin's back or if a shotgun blast on his right rib). I just always found it boring still. Just not a big fan. L4D2 should have been in development for at least 2 years. To me it was rushed.

But that is neither here nor there.

Back on Topic!
I meant in the actual creation of the infected. Each texture (such as clothes, faces) has a pool of possible colourations and variations in texture that are procedurally generated as infected are created, allowing huge numbers of infected that never quite look exactly the same, whilst still maintaining the general mob design aesthetic.

The gameplay might be sketchy to some (and there isn't anything wrong with that at all) but parts of it's technical design are very interesting. I wish more games would follow in their footsteps at times.

But yeah, wayyyy off-topic now.

Incedently, FUN SHOOTERS ARE COOL!

BRINK is the only non-"modern" shooter im looking forward to.

I find very little enjoyment out of games like series sam or duke nukem.

I will not pay full price for a single player game that went out of style 15 years ago.

People are all stuck with the nostalgia factor, those games aren't very good compared to more recent tiles at all. and neither will these new ones.

people in the 70s thought giant afros and bell-bottoms were cool.
if you wear them now, you just look stupid.

I love it when people try to ape Yahtzee with phrases like "Kill they ass" and yet complain about the exact thing Yahtzee wants.

Well, honestly, I think that DNF looks about as fun as repeatedly punching yourself in the fact and that everyone who really wants those shooters back doesn't really remember them that well, and that Bulletstorm was only fun to me because of its smooth, very CoD-like controls.

But I'm a CoD guy. If the stylistics of Bulletstorm or the gameplay of DNF appeal to you, that's fine and dandy. I'll stick to my super-realistic, super-serious shooters myself.

Hell, Serious Sam is actually fun as shit.
Serious Sam basicly is a Duke Nukem clone, so that makes no sense.
Serious Sam is bloody nothing like Duke Nukem. I'm going to assume you're talking about a Duke Nukem that isn't Forever, because that hasn't been released yet. There are two types of Duke Nukem games, side scrolling shooters, and Duke Nukem 3D a First Person Shooter with graphics more similar to Doom than to Serious Sam. The only notable similarity is that they both have waves of enemies (THough Duke Nukem wasn't that focused on enemy spam) and occasionally Sam will say something. Please, enlighten me as to where you got that idea.

I agree, out of all the shooters coming out, Brink is the one that looks the most fun to play. It might not be 'goofy' or feature over the top stereotypes as characters (as far as I know) but the general gameplay looks like a barrel of laughs.
