?Yo Izzy!? Marcus called out as he saw the girl walking towards the entrance he was waiting at. A couple of people talking beside a nearby building gave her a queer look, but Marcus couldn?t see any visible tendrils and couldn?t place the reason why as she approached.
Izzy waved a hand in acknowledgement and greeting, walking past various patrons of the park at a brisk pace. "Hey. So, where exactly is this meet up going to be? There are some pretty decent secluded spots in the park. I'd rather not have anyone seeing too much if possible. I do not need any more harassment from the paparazzi," she told Marcus as she looked around to make sure there were none around.
?Ya I know what you mean. I had to take off out of my apartment on bike to avoid being swarmed exiting it. Getting away from them out here would be a pain in the ass. Still no clue where we?re meeting up. I texted the girl setting this up and some others who said they were here, but I?m still waiting for a reply.? Marcus said as he looked down at his phone hoping to will it buzz.
"I am almost certain they'd chase me down if I tried to leave my apartment on a bike. At least with my car, they'd be less likely to run me off the road. I tried something else today though to get past them; figured that I might get a head start on the super power discovery we'd be doing today," Izzy stated, watching Marcus look at his phone before asking, "How many are there that you know of?"
?Most of them seem pretty slow, although I thought the bike was going to die on me while riding it. Would have been screwed then. Anyways, someone else said that they?re here with two other people from the group, so it would be six of us including us and Lisette,? Marcus said shrugging his shoulders before his phone started to buzz. Looking down he quickly checked it and saw Lisette?s text.
?Speaking of which she just said middle of the park at the trees,? Marcus said as he looked at the map for the fastest route there. ?So we?re you using those tentacle things to throw things at TMZ to distract them or something?? Marcus joked as he started to walk into the park.
"You don't know how tempted I am to," Izzy replied, following him along one of the park trails. "Not that I would be able to do much other than scare them as of yet. Maybe once I can do things other than flailing about and having them come out at inopportune moments I can put them to use."
?Could be worse, at least your powers will be useful in your daily life. In the mean time I?ll probably end up stuck with freezing the water every time I come into contact with it. And I thought a cold shower was bad. I can only imagine stepping in and getting pelted with icicles,? Marcus said scared of the thought as it came to him. ?So if you didn?t throw things at them, how did you get past them??
"By jumping," Izzy said simply, grinning at the thought of her venture before continuing, "You see, I didn't just get the tendrils. I'm faster. By how much, I'm not sure, but I intend to find out. So, anyways, I went to the roofs and got enough speed to be able to jump from one to another. Overshot my first jump by a decent amount, but I adjusted after that. Completely bypassed any paparazzi that were around. Though, now that I think about it, it wouldn't be good if they got pictures of me doing that..."
?That?s?? Marcus paused for a second to think of what he wanted to say next, ?interesting.? Jumping across roof tops to avoid the paparazzi was something that probably wouldn?t have occurred to him. ?Gutsy too. Although a photo of that would probably get you one of those stupid media nicknames. Something like a rabbit or frog or something,? Marcus said trying to ignore the thought of whatever stupid nickname he?d get with his ice powers.
?And what do you mean by you got faster? How much? Actually I got a better idea how about we race to the center of the park?? Marcus suggested as he turned onto the path that would lead them right to it. ?It should be where this path meets a big grouping of trees.? This should be fun. If I win I show off how fast I am, if I lose I?ll chalk it up to her getting a speed boost in addition to her tentacles and tell her how lucky she is.
"I would hate to be nicknamed something like that by the media," Izzy proclaimed, perking up at Marcus' proposition of a race. "I wouldn't mind having one. Get to test out potential powers, and even get a little bit of exercise in. You're on," Izzy told Marcus, making sure her wallet and cellphone were safely in her jacket pockets so that they wouldn't fall out. She looked down at her boat shoes, deciding to take them off for the run. "They weren't meant for this," she explained, holding them in one of her hands before asking, "Ready?"
?Sure,? Marcus said after making sure his phone, wallet, and keys were secured as well. He got into a ready position and called out, ?On your marks. Get set. Go.? Marcus didn?t take off right away and gave Izzy a chance for a bit of a head start.
"You don't have to go easy on me, ya know? I actually play sports and run on a daily basis," Izzy yelled after an initial explosive start, changing to longer, slower bounds to let him catch up. "I thought I'd actually have a challenge here," she baited, wanting to try and push herself faster than before. Can't get any better without practice.
And here I was giving you a chance. Marcus was willing to take off the gloves, and produced an explosive start of his own. The pack on his back bounced a jiggled a little before a water balloon broke, but Marcus had packed enough of them that he didn?t care. Instead he just focused on gaining speed and was soon on Izzy?s ass. ?Merely being a gentleman. You know ladies first and all.? Marcus said as he moved to pass and another water balloon broke in his pack.
The sudden increase of pace by Marcus was surprising to Izzy, having not factored in that he might also have extra help in the speed department. Thought I was special on that front, Izzy thought, picking up her own pace. All the years of running for sport made her efficient at it. Concentrate on breathing. Breath deep.
It was then the thought occurred to her that perhaps it would have been better to wear shoes. At the very least, for breaking purposes. Always jump ahead to prove something before thinking. The thought repeated itself a few times as the two got to their destination. Definitely going too fast now, she thought, deciding she had gone far enough and digging her feet into the ground in an attempt to stop. It wasn't until she had grabbed at the ground with one hand that she slowed down to a halt.
She took a few breaths before looking at her hand, or at least where it would be if it wasn't covered in the tendrils. "Well...I have an alright braking system now," she said aloud, looking at the ruts in the grass that had been caused by her.
Running for his life had been the main thing that made him proficient at it. Still Marcus and Izzy had kept speed with each other up until about the when they reached the end and Izzy took to the grass to stop. Marcus on the other hand started to skid as he tried to stop and ended up riding the bumpy grass beside it until he stopped hand to the ground.
Looking at Izzy it was clear that she ran into a similar situation, albeit with her tendrils jumping in to assist; leaving an odd looking track along the ground she covered. ?Are you alright?? Marcus asked as he wiped the dirt from his hand across his shorts. Water from his pack was starting to drip down his back as he had lost about a third of his water balloon supply in the race.
"I'm fine. No harm done, to me at least," Izzy replied, shaking her head at the damage the ground had suffered at her improvised braking. Turning away from the upturned ground, she looked at Marcus with a raised eyebrow and said, "You could have at least told me that you had some speed enhancements yourself. Also, you're leaking."
?Speed enhancements? Pretty sure I?m just genetically superior,? Marcus said jokingly as the water froze, turning the back of his shirt stiff with ice before it shifted directly onto the skin on his back. A chill soon followed up his spine. ?I think I patched the leak though and honestly I didn?t exactly notice the speed thing. Signs were there, but I guess I was ignoring and brushing them off.?
"Damn. Here I was thinking I was special with the speed. Wonder if someone else is suffering with the other power I have as well," Izzy wondered aloud, hoping no one else would have to endure the same thing she was dealing with. Even though she felt somewhat disgusted with her power at first, there was a certain endearing quality that she was coming to appreciate with it. We'll see if that lasts, she thought after looking down at the exposed tendrils coming out from under her jacket sleeve.
?So how about we call the race a tie. As for your other power I guess the only way to truly know is to find everyone else,? Marcus said as he waited for Izzy to put on her shoes before looking for Lisette and everyone else who said they were here.
"I usually don't settle for ties, but in this case it is probably a good idea," Izzy replied, pinching at the tendrils until they crept back under the sleeve all the way. She brushed off the dirt and grass that clung to her feet before slipping her shoes back on. "I'm good."
Don?t worry we can always settle this again later. Marcus thought to himself as he started to circle the outside of the grouping of trees; oblivious to the four men dressed as joggers keeping a good distance back, but in constant eyesight of the two.
It didn?t take long before Marcus came across the tree Lisette was sitting under. ?Hey Lis. This is the girl I mentioned earlier, Izzy,? Marcus announced as they got closer to each other.
Izzy waved a hand in acknowledgement and greeting, walking past various patrons of the park at a brisk pace. "Hey. So, where exactly is this meet up going to be? Code:
Head for the middle of the park, where the trees are. I'm gonna set up near the base of one of the big ones.
