The greatest game in the world

Games are probably the greatest media in the world:
They're engaging, immersive, fun, time consuming and, despite the stereotype, social. There's not one single male I know who doesn't have a form of games console, and so there's never a dull conversation to be had, especially with all the new titles waiting to burn another huge hole in my already charred wallet.
The question is, which game to get first? Do I get an FPS? A RPG? SIM? Racing? Action? Adventure? Platformer =/? It all depends on the mood you're in; so why not have BOTH? For too long have we dillydallied about with which disk to put in and play, we a messiah, a game to END ALL GAMES.
I'm one for trading in games before I've even finished them, totally paranoid that they'll go down in price and be totally worthless in about 10 seconds. Unfortunately, I'm also one for buying two god awful games instead of saving up and getting one I actually want. It's due to these mentalities that I've managed to play a fair few games in my time, and I know what makes a good game. In fact, we all do. It's very rare that we see a game hit top of the charts unless it's something special. So why do games designers not take any notice? Why, instead of ripping off games that sell well, or completely ignore what the public is screaming out for, do they not invent the best game ever? We all know what would be in it:
GTA's general mess-around-sandbox-ness
Saint's Row II's minigames and multiplayer, no, in fact
WORLD OF WARCRAFT MULTIPLAYER!
Fable II's and ability to hump/marry everything that moves
SIMS character development
Assassin's Creed's freedom of movement
Farcry's attention to detail
Red faction's destruction
something to do with Heavy Rain
Arkham Asylum's combat..
(Am I missing anything?)

I KNOW that this game sounds like a Frankinstein game and it would probably never have a plausible story to patch it together, but surely you can all SEE where I'm coming from??
We know what we like in a game, surely they can just start to have a general format (without making every game exactly the same, obviously)
and I'm fully aware that it would probably only be feasible on a PS3, or maybe even a PC, but come ON! I know it can be done, GTA IV with a bit more would be close enough!

Am I right, or just dreaming of something to perfect to ever be? </3

what do you think we could add to make the perfect game????

oh, and of course, the leaves wouldn't be pixelated ;)

There's no such thing as a 'perfect' game because everyone has a different opinion on what makes a good game good.

For me, the perfect game would have both of the following attributes:
A) A perfect story. Riveting, interesting, and no plot holes (Damn you Prince of Persia; you could've been perfect!)
B) Fun gameplay that keeps me wanting to play the game over and over and over and over...

Most games only have one or the other of my criteria which can make them good, but a perfect game definitly needs both.

This game will never be made, because it will make gaming companies obsolete. Do you want all those nice people to lose their jobs?

The perfect game has not been made.
It will never be made.
People's opinions on the best game are different from person to person.

But if you want an idea of what the best game should have, in my opinion it should at least contain Good compelling story, Character Depth, and Gameplay that keeps it from getting old EVER.

I came into this thread to add some arbitrary point about subjectivity, but I can see I've been thoroughly ninja'd.

So I guess I'll just say "we don't need to make a perfect game because Mario Tennis 64 already exists." Ithankyou.

I can totally see where you're coming from although I think one of the greatest things about games like you sort of touched upon is that there's something for everyone. I would like to see an amazing game with all the best bits of others put together but justifying it all would be impossible and mad.

Imagine if you will the MMO idea fused with the red faction destruction and the fable marriage option. Say two players get married and buy a house. They're about to do the nasty when suddenly an obnoxious level 99 player takes out your entire front wall with a single swing of his +5738 hammer of LAWL. It would be very fun to have such freedom and I really would like to see something with all the greatest game features included in a meaningful and GOOD way but I really doubt it'd ever happen ^^;

In general, 'Perfect' is very objective. In me, for example, it all depends on mood.

Stressed out / wanting to screw around = AvP
Want to game but not do too much work = Mass Effect
Need to be aggravated = Modern Warfare 2
In need of mental stimulation = Dawn of War
Want to socialize = EVe online

ect ect ect

And again everyone has different tastes.

Hahaha! now you're talking ;)

and what is it with everyone going on about how perfection is relative!
I'm talking about games not beauty!
and anyway, I don't know anyone that doesn't like at least TWO of the listed games...

The perfect game doesn't need to be the combination of the best parts of certain games. In fact, the perfect game was already made about 800 years ago.

My favorite game is Half-Life.
The first one was awesome for its time, and is still fun to play, even if it is ridiculous sometimes.

The second one changes its tact ENTIRELY.
It is a brilliant piece of media.

The universe of Half-Life is so full and rewarding.
Just to know about Laslo and his friend, just to fight your way through ravenholm with a raving lunatic.

Just to laugh at the old memory of exploding a scientists casserole only to be reminded of the fact in Hl2 Ep2, three games later.

Just to know the inner workings and layout of an antlion cave. To understand the whole combine overlords. The way every media could be controlled, anybody who struggles gets beaten down.

Just to send a garden gnome into space, with a pet headcrab named Lamarr.

The universe is so perfected, with every creature having a place, even if none of them resided on this planet, or their previous planet (Xen), but every one has a purpose and a reason for being here.

Just glance at the timeline and you see how thick and detailed the plot is.

A good story combined with equally good gameplay to follow in.

Michael Bay inspired explosions and destructability.

Some multiplayer with an "asshole junk" filter
