The Internet is NOT for porn

I love the internet. Why? Because I feel it's going to lead us all into the promised land. Okay, I kid, but it is the widest and most easiest accessible information available.

Before, we only had governments telling us who was good and who was evil, in the time of the Vietnam war people got to see the horrors that their government was committing within another country. The US toughened themselves up during the cold war with Black Lists and anti-commie propaganda to silence people. Destroy the media that the people were absorbing this anti-American way of life from.

Then the internet was made. Today it is so much harder to start any war when you can talk to and gain information from the news of the other country. The protests against the Iraq War were the biggest ever with almost 3,000 protests global, with over 36 million people taking apart with them. Today people can understand how the war is effecting others and how we need to stop it.

On the topic of religion, people suddenly were exposed to a number of religions explaining how there was not just one god world wide, but numerous with all having worshipers and all preaching the same love and peace messages. Of course religions mixed before the internet, but always had this 'them' mentality surrounding them.

This can be used on many many topics. Some of racism and how the internet has effected it for the better (I believe) or how two grieving teens can swap stories from across the world to give each other support. People have found friends and love online as well.

Of course not everything is roses though. People act like such fools sometimes claiming the only use is for porn. The percentage of porn online is slim; a lot less then someone would have guessed. People also spread false information for no reason other to push their own ideals. Then of course with everyone having access to this device, you have people with foul intent as well. Pedophiles, racist and sexist people spreading hate.

So how do you feel about the net? For the better or worse?
Do you feel that because of the internet that humans can advance forward or have we taken a step back as well?

The internet can be strict, but lets face it, we have the world at our finger tips, the first thing we are going to abuse with this power is to look for boobies.

The internet has not been used yet to track down all the racists, idiots and anti-christs of spelling, and so it has not yet been used to its full potential.

Avenue Q begs to differ.

However, it is also for having mostly pointless discussions on internet forums such as this one.

The internet places responsibility on us, the individual. We are exposed to more views and have greater access, what we make of that is up to us. Some of us will reinforce our view sin echo chambers while others challenge and expand their world view. The thing is it is now our choice, the television box does not dictate to us as the only filter of news.

It's a nice thing.
I'm fairly sure it will be pretty soon completely taken over by *ehm* goverment Carls, and censored brutally.
Enjoy it while it lasts.

Without the internet, I would never had met Alex.
Without me, Alex would be stuck in a dull existence, and never had amounted to anything.

I have given him the drive to do the things he didn't have the courage to do before.
I have made him happy.
And that is one of the best things you can do for a person.

I too think the internet is fantastic. But unfortunaterly all technology is above all human technology, created by, developed and used by humans: so there will be positives and negatives.
I sometimes watch porn on the internet, but the other 99.5% of the time I'm doing more constructive things. I don't feel bad about that, because I'm a complex person. Fundamentally, it's the choice of adults to use technology for what they want, and as such is just an extension of themselves, much as clothing or vocabulary are. What IS bad is children that use the internet unsupervised and are exposed to all the bad things there: but that's down to bad parenting, not human evil.

The Internet is the skeleton key to the human heart. There will be something in the depths of it that will shake anyone to their core, no matter their limits. The internet brings equality in one thing only:

Fear.

I disagree and i think that the internet IS for porn. I mean, thanks to the internet, people can now see just how hard their government is fucking them.

I love the internet.
It brought me here, which in my mind counters all the negative things it has done.
While I do hate the effect it has had on the english language and its spelling, I believe it has honestly done far more good than bad on the global scale(duh).
Sure, idiots can put up their opinions and present them as facts, people can abuse the connections it creates and gain information they were not meant to see, and general jackassery abounds, but most negatives can be dealt with by anyone with a scrap of common sense and the ability to retain it once given anonymity.

Plus, the connections that can be made with other people, as you noted, are very valuable, and fun to make most of the time. Honestly, I have more of a connection to some people on this site than I do in reality. True, I don't connect well in person, but still.

And I will probably be ninja'd here, but I have to say it: Avenue Q disagrees with you.

Really? I can't even watch porn after knowing the abuse and suicide rate behind it. I go for news and essays first... as well as webcomics.

The internet is for porn for some people. Like for us, it's for chatting, for others all sorts of things.

The internet might just help humanity, but not without shattering half the minds that use it.
This chatting on forums is increasing the flow of knowledge through people with arguments and essays and such. We can tell if a game or movie is shit without playing or watching it and we can also teach each other about wars and news (this is generally when people admit to idiocy and the rest of us flame the hell outta them).

I went to see that with my dad on my 16th birthday (in August). I was prepared to feel incredibly awkward until I found him singing along :D

What you do with your internet is your own business. If you want to look for the deep, philosophical answer to life, love, and religion, go for it. If you want to watch some chick get fucked hard, be my guest.

Also, proven statistic, for every "normal" site, there are 3 pornographic sites.

While there might be fewer porn sites on the net than you might think (It's still a huge number, mind), the amount of traffic on porn sites suggests that some people do believe the Internet is merely a source of porn. Delightful, isn;'t it?

When did this happen? :p

OT: I'm tempted to find that 4chan list of the rules of the Internet. I'm sure that CERN had all those things and more in mind when they invented the Internet.
