The internet is not for any simgle thing, it's able to be used for whatever a person wishes it to be used for. It's malleable enough that allmost any form of communation can occure with the internet. The power such a thing holds is immense, to say such a thing as a single purpose is folly.

And regarding porn.. when I was small we (ie. me and all my friends) desperately wanted to get our hands at porn. I somehow feel that todays youth has lost a certain feeling of yearning by the accesability.

So how do you feel about the net? For the better or worse?
Do you feel that because of the internet that humans can advance forward or have we taken a step back as well?

I believe the internet is a great tool for work and entertainment. Entertainment sometimes includes porn for some. So the internet is partially for porn. Of course, that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I will say though, as a result of the internet we are becoming very sedentary. It could be viewed as a step backwards in the health of our people. It also added a while new set of problems to peoples every day life which can lead to increases in aggravation and general misery. It also eliminates the skill of speech on a large scale. Why talk to someone on the phone if you can email them or send AIM to their cell phone? It also causes a lot of intercommunication due to inflection. As some people on this site have noticed, it is really hard to catch sarcasm when you aren't in the mood for it. There's plenty of other things, but that's all I have time for.

The internet is great. It gives people access to people they wouldn't have had access to before the internet. It's a great social tool, and has a wide array of functions. However, there are so many negatives: viruses, scams, etc etc.

What I really love about the internet is things like wikipedia, with noble goals like combining the collective knowledge of a huge group of people to get the most helpful information possible. By the people for the people!

The internet places responsibility on us, the individual. We are exposed to more views and have greater access, what we make of that is up to us. Some of us will reinforce our view sin echo chambers while others challenge and expand their world view. The thing is it is now our choice, the television box does not dictate to us as the only filter of news.

it gives people a wider choice. Before it was 'Communism is evil' now it's more 'is Communism evil?' We finally have a right and a medium to learn and make up our minds about these things.

I love the internet.
It brought me here, which in my mind counters all the negative things it has done.
While I do hate the effect it has had on the english language and its spelling, I believe it has honestly done far more good than bad on the global scale(duh).
Sure, idiots can put up their opinions and present them as facts, people can abuse the connections it creates and gain information they were not meant to see, and general jackassery abounds, but most negatives can be dealt with by anyone with a scrap of common sense and the ability to retain it once given anonymity.

Plus, the connections that can be made with other people, as you noted, are very valuable, and fun to make most of the time. Honestly, I have more of a connection to some people on this site than I do in reality. True, I don't connect well in person, but still.

I disagree and i think that the internet IS for porn. I mean, thanks to the internet, people can now see just how hard their government is fucking them.

The Internet is the skeleton key to the human heart. There will be something in the depths of it that will shake anyone to their core, no matter their limits. The internet brings equality in one thing only:

Funny. I've ignored all that and haven't felt fear here.

I too think the internet is fantastic. But unfortunaterly all technology is above all human technology, created by, developed and used by humans: so there will be positives and negatives.
I sometimes watch porn on the internet, but the other 99.5% of the time I'm doing more constructive things. I don't feel bad about that, because I'm a complex person. Fundamentally, it's the choice of adults to use technology for what they want, and as such is just an extension of themselves, much as clothing or vocabulary are. What IS bad is children that use the internet unsupervised and are exposed to all the bad things there: but that's down to bad parenting, not human evil.

Your point of being constructive is also a good point made. There is a lot of creativity shared online. If not for the net a lot of singers, artists and people with talent would never have made it anywhere.

Search any word, any person, and I guarentee there is some relation to porn on that search. Porn and find that porn has connections to everything and owns a major share of the internet.

You just have to realize there's more to the net then search engines.

I use it for looking up information, talking with people, games, etc... Never saw what was so great for porn, and was kind of disgusted when I learned that someone that sat by me in one of my classes just recently found out that there is a use for the internet besides porn...
