The internet IS for porn. But not just porn, for chat rooms, e-mail, and talking with people you know as well as making friends with people you don't. The Internet is a great invention that helps bring the whole world together and really see the perfect future where we all live in harmony and peace.

It's also for pictures of cats asking for cheeseburgers.

Avenue Q begs to differ.

However, it is also for having mostly pointless discussions on internet forums such as this one.
I went to see that with my dad on my 16th birthday (in August). I was prepared to feel incredibly awkward until I found him singing along :D
You know that any and all awkwardness is gone when you find him humming along to "Everyone's a little bit racist". xD
I didn't even know he knew the song though! XD

Without the internet, I would never had met Alex.
Without me, Alex would be stuck in a dull existence, and never had amounted to anything.

I have given him the drive to do the things he didn't have the courage to do before.
I have made him happy.
And that is one of the best things you can do for a person.

But I'm Alex....

I'm still stuck in a dull existence....

The internet doesn't have to be tied down to one single use. It can be used for deep, intelligent conversation, discussion, a way for communication, etc etc... and, of course, it can simply be used for pornography too.

I think the internet most certainly isn't for porn, but theres no reason why it can't be a part of it either (except the whole sexism thing and underage exposure, of course, but those dangers were always there)

The internet is whatever people want it to be. It was a device created for the use of mankind through unlimited means. If we want to use it for good, then we can: websites like Wikipedia[footnote]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page[/footnote] can be used to gather information and spread our knowledge around the world, the official websites of various bands help us expand our horisons (if we know where to look, that is. The first band to ever become famous off the internet was Sheffield-based group Arctic Monkeys[footnote]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_Monkeys http://www.arcticmonkeys.com/[/footnote] in 2006); social websites and forums like The Escapist[footnote]Do I really need to link to this?[/footnote], MySpace[footnote]http://www.myspace.com/[/footnote] and Facebook[footnote]http://www.facebook.com/home.php[/footnote] allow us to meet new people and socialise with members of the world whom we would have no chance of even meeting beforehand. The internet was originally going to be used so that scientists could communicate to one another from across the world, it can be a wonderful place

But with that, it can be manipulated for whatever we want as well. Approximately 80% of the internet is solely spam, only used for stealing identities, infecting computers and robbing people of their money. Porn sites and casino sites regularly give viruses to people's hardrive (whilst doing Work Experience at a computer firm, an infected computer had over 400 viruses from gambling and casino sites). Political sites and religious sites can often give half-assed arguments and bullshit that use persuasive language to get people to believe them, regardless of the possibilities of the ideas behind them being wrong.

So, I have no idea whether the internet has helped or hindered us, whether the good outweighs the bad or any other way of saying it. The internet is only what we want it to be; it is not the internet's fault that it has scarred the english language, that is the work of us in front of the monitors; it is not the internet's fault that /b/ is the scum of the internet, that is merely the fault of the users who feel like gods due to their anonymity. If we became less anonymous on the internet, maybe that would help, but the final step towards improving the internet is improving the people on it.

EDIT: Fuck sake, how many times do we need to read another Avenue Q reference? We get it already, now shut up and post something intelligent that we can discuss.

The internet is for porn, face it kid.

Also the OP must not realize that the government created the interwebz to better communicate during times of war. And he also must think those anti war protests did jack to stop bush from starting his little war.

Search any word, any person, and I guarentee there is some relation to porn on that search. Porn and find that porn has connections to everything and owns a major share of the internet.

I too think the internet is fantastic. But unfortunaterly all technology is above all human technology, created by, developed and used by humans: so there will be positives and negatives.
I sometimes watch porn on the internet, but the other 99.5% of the time I'm doing more constructive things. I don't feel bad about that, because I'm a complex person. Fundamentally, it's the choice of adults to use technology for what they want, and as such is just an extension of themselves, much as clothing or vocabulary are. What IS bad is children that use the internet unsupervised and are exposed to all the bad things there: but that's down to bad parenting, not human evil.
I must bow down to your superior nature. I don't really watch porn but I wouldn't say I spend anywhere near 99% of my time on the net doing anything constructive. For me the internet is as much about flash games and youtube as it is about e-mails and research. I am a Why do those damn flash games tempt me when I'm trying to write a report? Why?! *sobs*

People can look at what they want I suppose, who am I to stop them?

The internet can be strict, but lets face it, we have the world at our finger tips, the first thing we are going to abuse with this power is to look for boobies.
Really? I can't even watch porn after knowing the abuse and suicide rate behind it. I go for news and essays first... as well as webcomics.
Ack, there's abuse behind pretty much everything, if people took that attitude rigidly we probably wouldn't buy many of the items we doa or eat most of the food we do because there's quite a lot of suffering and abuse are a part of the production many of these things.

Mind you, whats with all these do-gooders using news and essays and reports? I spend half my internet time on here, facebook and wikipedia.
Wait wait... suicide and abuse based on porn? LOL! Only from the watchers of 2 girls 1 cup maybe XD

The internet IS a very powerful thing. I was watching a TV show for Computing Theory the other day, ("Inventions that Changed the World - The Computer" , BBC) and it brought up an interesting question. Can the Internet truly be shut off? As in, completly? At first, I thought if all the internet providers shut down then it'd be completly shut off. But it'd still be there, right?

The internet itself is a growing wealth of information, entertainment, socialising and yes, in some cases more personal whims. Its use has likely eliminated quite a lot of the need for research books, but the growing bank of information at your fingertips is phenomenal.

If you wanted to get down to it, the internet can very easily steer peoples thinking ever so subtley. An example; most people nowadays use Google to search the internet. What if someone could manipulate what came up when you searched? Say, bring forward certain links and push back others? A clever individual could manipulate millions by shaping thier search results. Likewise for things like YouTube, FaceBook, etc etc.

Just a few thoughts.

I use it for looking up information, talking with people, games, etc... Never saw what was so great for porn, and was kind of disgusted when I learned that someone that sat by me in one of my classes just recently found out that there is a use for the internet besides porn...

Like 12% of all sites on the net are pornographic in content, that is not a "slim" percentage.

Anyhow, the internet is a lot of things, and if one of those things is porn, I don't find any problem with it. I'm a fan.
