Far off in the forest, a Roman soldier walked alone. He had been separated from the others in the mad chase they had given to the glowing figure, and now he was trying to find his way back. That would not be happening. He heard a faint fluttering sound, like a cloak falling to the floor. He drew his blade and turned to face the sound, but saw nothing. There were only the sparse bushes of the same type he'd been seeing for hours. He gave a sigh of relief at his good fortune. That was when the blade burst through his chest.
It was a shimmering weapon, made of light itself, it seemed to the soldier. He tried to call for help, but a hand was quickly clasped over his mouth, and only a muffled panicking noise could escape its vice.
"Shhhhh. It's almost over."
A dull shuk-ing noise rang in the soldiers ears as a spike materialized in the man's hand and drove itself into his skull.
Not three second later, Zech believed it safe to drop him to the floor, dead.
"They will not find you out here. They will all tell themselves that it was a trickster from your blasphemous place, Hades, or something akin to that. I, however, must return to my village now. You see, I am on a quest, by the grace of God, to free this land from your oppression. Wish me luck, new friend."
Zech turned and walked away from the corpse. He did not know why he spoke to his victims, but it comforted him in some grim way. It humanized them. It reminded him that for all their atrocities, the Romans were still people and had to be treated as such. He wasn't sure what step to take next. The Roman garrison was down several men and their barracks was heavily damaged. That seemed like a victory, but because of Matrion's showcase the leaders of their military would surely hear of the wretched, unnatural place this village was, and they would likely send soldiers of their own. Or worse.
I wonder... Zech mused as he began the trek home. Do the Romans have men and women with gifts like those of the Exorcists? They seem to burn all like that, but they would surely be a better use to them alive.
