Going by some of these choices it is obvious some of you people can't read. It says to name a badass who isn't the main character. My pick would be MetaKnight

HK-47 is another badass non-main character (Kreia is definitely second, if not first).
When I first played KOTOR 2, I was about 12, and Kreia's opinion on how helping the needy would actually hurt them blew my fucking mind. I don't think you can get any more bad ass than HK-47, so he wins by default, but I am glad to see at least one other person appreciated the old hag.

I'm gonna say Shepard is the biggest badass in Mass Effect. You can argue Wrex, Legion, Saren, etc, but the entire universe respects/fears/wants to have sex with the Shep. Can't get more badass than that.
Legion is bad ass, like super bad ass, as ass of bad as you can get.
But Shepard is pretty cool, but not a bad ass
Legion is the vanguard of a race of super-machines that are hell bent on eradicating all life in the galaxy. He's probably already killed billions of living organisms and, had he not been cast as the villain and required to die, would have gone on with the happy slaughter. Not to mention his voice was just out and out scary.
Um...wut
Legion was never portrayed as a villain and never required to die
I think you didn't play Mass Effect 2....
Yeah, you might want to play the game before you make an opinion on the badassery of the characters.

No matter what, you will never be better than liberty prime.
That is an incredibly good point.

That depends. Would you consider forcing Zaalbar to kill Mission to be badass or a whole new level of evil?

I didn't actually see HK as a badass myself, I saw him as more of a murderous ****. But, to each his own.

I'm not sure if you're agreeing with seydaman or A velociraptor, but seydaman is actually right. Legion was never actually shown to be a villain. He stated that half the Geth never wanted to go to war, and that they wanted to make their own way in the galaxy. Those who sided with the Reapers were shunned as heretics.

Further, it's completely possible to have Legion live through the suicide mission. As long as you have the right upgrades and completed his loyalty mission before the suicide mission, he should survive. Provided you keep his trust.

Sev from Killzone 2 (I had to count out Radec because he
commited suicide
and that's cowardice).

Nico Bellic from GTA IV.

Soap McTavish from both MW games (to be fair, he wasn't the protagonist for most of the second game and that's mainly when his badass moments happened).

The Apprentice from Force Unleashed.

Nathan Drake (yes, you read that correctly) from Uncharted.
etc. etc.

I agree that he's the most badass character in that show, but he's not the main character.

This is all opinionated, it can't be wrong.

You gave examples of quite possibly the least most badass shows/characters ever.
Yeah, I know. I was really drawing a blank when I made this thread. Also note that all of the examples are animes. I really should have put more of a diverse though into this.

I'm pretty sure this only counts for games/movies/series about teams of people. Obviously if there is only one protagonist he's going to be the most badass out of himself and no one else.

The most badass characters usually aren't the deepest characters and are there purely to be awesome. For the purposes of character development and how relatable a character is they're gonna have to have a personality, not just be a stereotype. Also, the main character is usually the leader, a leader can't be a total badass, they have to be somewhat responsible.

Just in response to a few suggestions;

Shepard- I think most would agree Wrex, Jack or Garrus would be more badass. Being a total badass isn't really about reputation. A renegade Shephard maybe. Badass defines a certain type of person. Basically the badass shoots first.

Marcus Fenix- Cole would be more of a badass character than Marcus.

The main character needs a personality but a personality just takes up precious brain space that can be used to store creative ways to kill anything dumb enough to get in your way.
I completely agree with this.

And I'm going to go with Colonel Mustang because...
He kills Pride.
Heh, okay I'll go with that.

But thats just in Fullmetal, you're wrong if we look at Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Baldur's Gate, Saints Row 2, Doctor Who, 24, Firefly, Angel or Splinter Cell, to name a few.
I wouldn't say I was wrong, because this is all an opinion. For example I though River was the most badass character in Firefly. However, I will say I should have thought it through more.

Actually I was asking for badasses who are the main character. I was looking for exceptions to my rule (which has fiercely been shot out of the sky) that the main character in anything is never the biggest badass. Nonetheless, I'm inclined to agree. Meta Knight kicks ass.

well, thats easy, because the player character doesnt usually have lines and the player cant see them doing badass stuff most of the time

I disagree: Whats-his-face from Shadow of the Colossus was badass and before you flame me about how the colossi were badass too, lemme just say that anyone (besides Kratos because he's AVENGING) who takes on giant creatures with a blade and a bow with infite arrows has to have some level of badass-ness when he WINS! And yet he seems no more happy that he's closer to recovering his girlfriend...Maybe he should just forget about her? That got off-topic but my point is he acts cool plus the fact he can take down something that "Would need to go on a starvation diet before it could be considered humongous." with nothing more than a mystical blade, bow and arrows, and a horse which is frightened by the colossi.

No, that's not Nuff' said. You forgot the biggest badasses:

Alucard (Hellsing/OVA)
*Kenshiro (Fist of the North Star)
Guts (Berserk [I hate Berserk and want it to die a horrible death, but I will admit that the MC is a badass])
And of course SPIKE SPIEGEL from mutha-fuckin' Cowboy Bebop!!
