I was Renegade but I had a good portion of Paragon points. I could say that they were 50-50, with Renegade taking the upper hand. Not playing Renegade is like not playing the game at all.

It's more fun to act on your instinct, rather than to play straight Paragon or Renegade.
For definitely, playing how you want is the best option.
But I have to disagree with saying not playing Renegade isn't playing, as it's kind of contradictory to the 'play how you want' part.

My Shepard had her parents killed in a slaver raid, watched as she slowly became the single survivor on Akuze.
She doesn't want to end life before questions are asked about it, she wants to assume there is a way to protect everyone. When it comes down to it she is always prepared to do what she has to.
But she never wants to be the last lonely survivor if there was anything she could do to prevent it.

If it's a situation that isn't highly volatile and she views the renegade approach as the better solution she has been known to take it. Specifically where her friends and crew are concerned, she will go to extreme lengths to protect them, and if needed she will take less then Paragon action to see them happy, as long as she sees it justified.
