So yesterday i was in a sort of meeting with military personnel from my country where you get told about the military and get your sight, hearing, intelligence etc tested. This is due to the fact that in Norway when you become 18 you may be called into service for the military. Now this session i was at yesterday is basically just the start and if i get a letter from the military saying ill be called in ill be going to the army for about a year.

So while i was thinking of my own possible entrance into the army i started to wonder if other countries got a similar system setup or if its just us ex-vikings up here.

So please tell me where you are from and your experiences with tha army ^^.

Well in Australia it's purely a choice thing. I have no intention of ever joining the military and no one can ever make me.

Similar set up? Fuck no. We have no such system in Britain, I think the only time you may get called up is in times of invasion or whatnot. Sorry my ex-viking chum.

Matter of fact the only other country I can think of with such a set up is Israel.

Conscription only seems to go on in countries around Russia in my experience, nothing like it here in the UK. It's understandable though, gotta be on your toes around those Ruskies.

Here in jolly old Blighty, we don't have conscription. Though you could volunteer if you so wished.

I do know that Singapore has "National Service" in which everyone has to serve in the armed forces at some point. As well as the "National Defence Duty" in Finland. So you are not alone, I can tell you that much :)

Damn!. What must you be like if they had given you a tank and you had slept in it?.

I can almost see the headlines...

...all those Red vs Blue scenarios are rushing to my head now!.

Agreed.

Terrorist could walk into my living room and I wouldn't do shit. I'm lazy that way.

Eh, I'd probably ask him to leave - and maybe he would! You never know, nobody's ever polite to a terrorist.

Really? If Australia is like any other government they'll probably bomb your whole neighborhood just, turn around and say "We couldn't help that he was hiding amongst civilians".

You really should police your own back yard man.

Yeah, same here in Sweden, but next year you get to chose if you want to join whether or no your qualified(unfortunately, whether or not I'm joining is decided b>this[/B] year so it doesn't help me one bit). So once again: sucks to be you,my western neighbor.

Here in the Netherlands we had conscription upto about 15 years ago. You get a first letter saying you've been pu in the system for conscription when you turn 15 (I think, maybe 16). This gives you the option to go in for "early conscription" so you don't have to interrupt college or somesuch.

We got call up some time after we turned 18, where you'd get tested. I turned 18 in December and conscription got "put on hold" Januari first, which means I lucked out. Officialy we still have conscription but unless there's a war or other "crisis" noone will get called up.

I did try out for Air Force pilot after that but I got tyrned down for "psychological reasons", so I have a letter somewhere explaining I'm too crazy for the armed forces...

Hmmm if i get drafted i signed up for the artillery section thingy:) i mean the possibility of firing a gun the size of my room stands out as a pro so big that all the cons vanish

In britain too, I don't have a high opinion of the military much since they refuse to carpet bomb their enemies into oblivion anymore. Pussies.

Where I come (Australia.) it is purely your choice whether you join the Military. But you must meet certain typical requirments, IE 18, and stuff.

here in germany we have to take a similar test, where your sight, hearing, etc and your intelligence is tested. if your health is good enough that you COULD stand your military training, you're in.
well, there are ways around this. you can refuse to go, but you have to give a good reason why you dont want to join the military.
but even then you have to work at hospitals and similar institutions for 9 months. this is called "Zivildienst" in german, roughly translated "civil service".
so the only chance to escape all of this is to be unhealthy, unathletic and such.
unfortunatly i wasnt... well i worked at an home for old people. at least i was paid ^^

I was in one of the last batch of Swedes to get something resembling a "conscription". As a girl, I had to volounteer anyway (as only 18 year old guys are drafted), but I know a few of my classmates back then weren't too happy about going off to be in the military for a year.

As for my experience of it, the Army was a decent place to be. I served in the Air Defence as a communications squadleader and while it wasn't really fun (most of my time was spent doing menial tasks to keep the officers working, like serving food, checking the fibrewire, refueling vehicles or guard duty) it was an experience I am glad I have.
Of course, it helps if you like the military to begin with and have no problems with living a life full of regulations for a year.
