whats the most annoying convention you know of in video games? For me, it's the use (or misuse) of elevators. You hit the call button and half the time the game dosn't make it clear if the elevator is coming soon, or if the elevator is broken and then you have to worry about enemies up your arse while you are cornered waiting for the damn thing to come. Once you do board the bloody thing, there you go waiting for it to take you to your floor, usually while some stupid announcement is going off that really isn't necessary to the plot of the game. Waste of time. The only time it did work well, that I can think of, is left 4 dead in the hospital, but oh no wait! When you're online, there's always that jerk who has the tank and pushes the generator in the way (they may have fixed this, its been awhile since I played) rendering you useless. I say down with elevators in video games!

Unskippable cutsecnes or dialogue you have to sit through several times over until you get past that part. Automatic or badly times saved points. As in a game saving while I have a sliver of health or the game just happend to save as I'm falling over a drop off to my death.

Grinding anything. It sucks the fun out games.

That and crashes hours after your last save or even worse save game errors :-(

Random bloody encounters. Also, games like Manhunt that disallow me to shoot enemies in plain sight becuase they havn't been targetted.

I never knew tanks could do it, since when they punch things they send them flying... Wait, actually, it would be impossible, since the tank wouldn't spawn until they got to the top of the elevator. They used to have something where you could be a boomer and punch a generator or forklift in the way of the elevator, but they got rid of that.
Anyway, for me, the most annoying thing in a videogame is a long combo of hits that you can't get out of. I know it only happens in fighting games usually, but it gets really annoying when you fail to block once, they start hitting you, and you keep trying to escape it while they take a good chunk of health.
Grinding is a close second, and I would have to say, invisible walls are annoying, but only in certain circumstances/games.

Poison is one of the most annoying things in any video game. It slowly takes away your health and you can't do anything about it, unless you have one specific item that cures the poison. So you better carry the maximum amount of that item. And if you run out of these items towards the end of a dungeon, well you better haul your ass all the way back to town to stock back up.

Weapon degradation also sucks.

No autosave.

That is the absolute worst.
Seconded. I'm also sick of sewer levels that exist solely because you get the feeling the devs didn't want to pay someone to make another good-looking topside level.

The only sewer level I liked was in Hitman 2, where you used the sewers in Red Square to sneak up behind guards. It wasn't the whole level, and it actually made sense.

I especially don't get the use of sewer levels - ahem, SUBWAY TUNNELS - in Fallout 3. You made a giant rubble-strewn post-apocalyptic wasteland for me to play around in. Let me play around in it, please.

I hate the games that wont let you harm children. Heres looking at you, Fallout 3!

That stupid brat from Greyditch ran up to me, and unfortunatly for him I was on my newly started evil character. I was so disapointed when I told him to buzz off, started shooting him and he just ran away, endlessly absorbing bullets.

*Edit*
This has actually got me thinking. What the hell is the point? Its like they are saying violence against children is going too far, but its only virtual. Killing a child in a game is not going to make me into a child abuser, in much the same way that killing any other NPC wont turn me psychotic. Stupid developers :<

Unskippable cutscenes, especially right before a boss. Ridiculous load times. Also of course glitches/crashes, but that should go without saying.

the absolute WORST 2 things for online play are lag and glitches, both pretty much making a game unplayable when you cant even hit your targets

I can see how elevators can be annoying, but they are no match for invisible walls. Hands down the worst thing ever in gaming.
Oh god those are so annoying in Fallout 3. I'm just exploring when suddenly I smack right into a barrier that tells me to go away. It's the perfect way to break immersion. They should have just hit you with a huge amount of rads every time you wandered off the map. That would at least feel more natural.

Oh yeah, the game can also spawn enemies outside the invisible walls. So if you're a melee character, all you can do is run away whilst being shot in the ass.

annoying twelve year old/prepubescent boys (or girls) who YELL(!!!!!) into their mikes on XBL. Yeah you can mute them, but if you that's too distracting from the game. By the time you've muted them, you've died three times. And they are so easy to piss off and they aren't that good either.

EDIT: And if you betray them for being a little **** they boot you from the game for team killing.
