The Forest and The Path from Tale of Tales are both beautiful, although The Forest is a rather silly game. Can't explain it exactly, and it's certainly not the most advanced engine, but something about how the Forest looks, and the characters too, is just awesome. Ive appreciated art in many games, but those two are the only ones where Ive taken a step back and gone, "Damn that's gorgeous"
Have you played Fatale yet?
Its a little... Well, it is a bit formulaic, but lovely and a good experience, nonetheless.
The end is a little blinding, but its a sort of realism to consider.
I have played Fatale...sadly, I was curious enough that I didn't wait until it came out on Steam. Ah well, bigger percentage to the indie devs.
Personally, I felt that Fatale has been there weakest game yet. They are great at aesthetics and art design, but there game design leaves a lot to be desired. I understand that they purposefully keep the game play to a minimum, but there are techniques and mechanics they could have utilized which would have enforced the strength of the game, rather then making it feel like they shoe horned the game part in out of obligation. The Forest is basically a screen-saver, so lack of game play isn't a big deal, and in The Graveyard, the lack of meaningful play is the entire point. I disagree with how they approached the intentional lack of choice, but it at least the game mechanics and dynamic enforced the games aestetic. The Path came much closer to a sense of meaningful choices, and the art design itself was their best by far, which is why I had such high hopes for Fatale. However, it felt like the game design choices were specifically there to inhibit appreciation, and the sense of wonder and exploration of The Path gave way to a static, unchanging environment of Fatale. I'm afraid I may have missed a good deal of Fatales point, what with not being terribly familiar with the story of John the Baptist, and never reading the Oscar Wild play. So really, the worst criticism I can give is that the game doesn't stand by itself, but could be a good complimentary piece. I don't regret the 7 bucks I spent, and definitely Fatale has a high ratio of beauty to explorable area, but their other work blows it out of the water by being a much richer (Or starker) environment, with a much greater breadth.
Wow. Goddamn I'm a nerd.
