Possibly one of my favorite songs ever and I hardly know how to describe it. I just get a feeling inside when I hear it...

The Bad Touch by The Bloodhound Gang (y'know, the "you and me baby ain't nothing but mammals" one.) Beautiful.

But in reality...

Yes to Jeff Buckley playing Hallelujah, but I saw Leonard Cohen live recently play it and that kind of overtook...

Also, Romeo and Juliette by Dire Straits.

Also also, I dunno if it's beautiful as such but Sweet Jane by Velvet Underground.

And has been mentioned but Great Gig in the Sky, and Comfortably Numb, Pink Floyd.

Umm... Theme of Sorrow isn't a song? What exactly is your definition of a song?
doesn't a song need words?

i was under the impression that that was the difference between music and a song.
I'm pretty sure that a song is simply a piece of music, with or without words. I mean what else would we call instrumental music? A piece? A music? I've never heard that distinction of the word, and my father's a music teacher. I'll have to look that up I guess...

it's just a tune usually.

it might have other names depending on it's purpose, but that's a pretty general name.

singing needs words. otherwise it isn't singing. if you hum some tune to yourself, it's not singing. if you play the flute (for example) you aren't singing.

Ammonia Avenue, by Alan Parson's Project. Too bad it has no actual meaning...
Oh, and Tomaso Albinoni's Adagio in G minor. Gives me shivers every time I listen to it.

Sad, but beautiful.

EDIT: Also "Open Your Eyes" by Snow Patrol.
I love you. Matthew Good FTW.

I'm inclined to say Running for Home or Blue Skies over Bad Lands (same artist) myself. Or A Boy and His Machinegun. Or Tripoli or Truffle Pigs. Actually, I'll go on a limb and just say Matthew Good with heavy bias.

EDIT: Also feel the need to add Collapse the Light into Earth by Porcupine Tree.

I have it on a mix CD in my car... I listen to it almost every day during my commute to school. :) One of the greatest songs ever. You just have to set aside a little time to listen to it. >.>

Like a few others I think Stairway to Heaven (Led Zeppelin) has to take this accolade for me, although Fields of Gold (Sting and The Police) follows closely.
