Dream Theater
Northern Kings
Blind Guardian
Sturm und Drang (They're not the best yet, but give them ten or so years and they'll be amazing.)
Sonata Arctica
Misery Signals

That's a few off my list.
The last time we had this thread, I posted some others, but I don't remember...
I like that list good sir!

I like it a lot...

Agalloch should really get much more credit than they do, personally I find them better than Opeth. They have a similar sound and themes throughout their songs. Don Anderson, the lead guitarist of this band has a side project which is probably my favorite metal band, Sculptured; Avant-garde/Progressive metal.

Cynic though they are pretty popular, people don't give them credit because they get lumped into the Death Metal scene.

Daylight Dies, very good melancholic Death/Doom metal band

Earshot easy to listen to alt metal/rock band, singer sounds a lot like MJK of Tool

Feos is a one man shoegaze/black metal project that is very good

Giant Squid is a really catchy Sludge group who recently released an amazing album

Ihsahn is the project of one of the guitarists of Emperor, it has obvious black metal influences, but it also has a power metal overtone.

November's Doom is a band that doesn't have a big fanbase, personally, they sound like just another Death/Doom metal band, but they have a good sound, they just don't do much with it sadly.

Katatonia is a good Doom/Dark metal band out of Switzerland, the Jonas Renske of this band and Mike Akerfeldt of Opeth are good friends, they formed a small, short lived outfit October Tide. Mike and a few of the band members of Katatonia and other musicians formed the group Bloodbath which is a good Death/Gore metal band.

Warning is a good traditional Doom band. on the same coin, Winter is a good Funeral Doom/Death metal group which share a lot of the same influence.

I've been a metal fan for about a year and a half now and it's usually the biggest bands that get the most attention (go figure), but recently I've started to listen to bands like Opeth and Tarot who are AMAZING!

I'm not sure about Opeth but not many people outside of Finland seem to know about Tarot which is a shame as they are a phenomenal band.

I'm just here to ask all you Metal heads here who do you think is an underrated metal band but with their amount of skill should be ruling the world.

And as a note I checked the search bar and nothing came up like this so if this has already been done, my bad =/
Tip o the hat to your name first off...

I feel I can't answer your question. You see bands like Opeth that are quite heavy will never be "big" in the Metallica sense of the word and I am happy about that. I don't want any of my music to get big, because big bands get watered down and drawn out. Also metal in general is something that is more a scene not a trend. It isn't meant to make huge amounts of money anymore, and most bands that are big to us fans will never make what mainstream music makes moneywise. We won't rule the world, but we'll rule our world and that's good enough.

There's two bands, Demia and Susperia; they're both pretty unknown but at least very decent.

Mastodon: Progressive Sludge Metal
Kylesa: Sludge Metal
Between The Buried & Me: Progressive Death Metal
Intronaut: Progressive Death Metal/Jazz Fusion
3: Progressive Metal
The Megas: Video Game Metal

Just off the top of my head...

If I had to name an underated 80's hair metal band that probably none of you have heard of then Loudness comes to mind. Check out their Soldier of Fortune Album. I still love to mix it in to my workout montage along with survivor and stan bush lol

Sonic Syndicate, however when they release their next album I think the word will start spreading... I think it has begun a bit already, they have toured with In Flames and stuff so yeah... and the bassist is super-hot, Karin Axelsson. :D

Black freaking Tide.
I guess they're relatively new to the music scene, so few people know about them, but damn they're awesome.

Paradise Lost: they're incredible
Porcupine Tree: seriously, I don't know how they're not bigger than say... Oasis. They write better music and could actually appeal to a greater audience :p
Agalloch: because of the serious win of the album Ashes Against The Grain.
